I crossed bridges today. There was next to nothing on them. Yes I have thought about it. Drive safely out there everyone. It is not bad driving conditions at all currently.

It's going to stay clear, sunny, and dry this afternoon. That's helping a lot.

Couple of things to consider. This isn't an office with 20 employees coming to work.

This is 16k students getting to school on buses on roads that may not be safe in certain areas.

Another 2k+ employees also getting to work. Driving from out of town in lots of cases. And if they can't get to work have to be covered by someone, because your kids can't sit in a class without an adult.

Kids sitting outside as early as 6AM in temps in the low 20's waiting on buses to pick them up.

School districts that can't afford to have <90% attendance because a large portion of their funding is tied to ADA (Average Daily Attendance).

Those are all things you have to consider when making those decisions. You can be mad that people are "soft" and mad that people won't bring their kids to school to be extra safe, but be mad at those people, not the district who's looking out for over 17k people from ages 6-60.

there is a lot of water on the road coming in from south college station, what happens to that water tonight?

I'm not sure …

And to be fair, I'm not advocating one way or the other on if BISD, CSISD and surrounding schools should be or shouldn't be in school tomorrow. That decision will be made by a select group of individuals that I would venture none of which are on this thread discussing it anyway.

I'm just saying that your callous and dismissive tone, acting like there's nothing more to the decision than what you're saying, is incredibly dumb. Speaking with certainty that you're right, while ignoring the fact that there are multiple factors involved in making decisions, is short-sighted.

I'm shocked they are going back tomorrow. I actually don't have the choice to bring my child tomorrow due to a medical appt I have to accompany someone to. So its either I let my 16 year old new driver potentially drive on ice (not happening) or have to rely on someone else. I've already texted another parent.

A lot of parents don't have the luxury of bringing their kids to school - depending on work hours, etc. Luckily 99.999% of the time I do, and now my child can normally drive herself.

As long as it stays sunny and dries up enough - sure. I just know if things are still wet they will start freezing again by late evening.

I'm happy for them to be going back as long as its safe for them to do so.

I don't believe there has been an official announcement from CSISD or BISD..Just TAMU

Message on CSISD and BISD websites and social media still say " Closed Monday, will update by 5pm Monday regarding Tuesday"

You've got to look at it from the schools side as well. If they decide to not cancel or delay and a bus hits a patch of black ice and something bad happened, lawsuits will hit them hard.
Again, this is why bad weather days are built into the school calendar each year. No need to get so worked up over this. Safety should always be priority.

Agreed. Children first. Always.

The school has to decide the night before. They don't get the benefit of waiting until 6AM to go look at the roads.

There is also a check already in place. The schools are motivated to hold school. State funding is based on education minutes. There are mechanisms in place for bad weather days, but typically they must be made up or justified and approved, which is more work for everyone.

I think they will open tomorrow, but if they don't, I'm sure there will be a good reason for it.

On my dog walk in Pebble Creek a few hours ago it was mostly clear outside of shaded areas and the storm drains still had a thick layer of ice them. With getting cold overnight again I would be very careful on overpasses.

With the temperature expected to be in the teens when the kiddos are waiting at the bus stop in the morning (and random patches of ice likely in some areas), I'm sure they're also considering a 2-hour delay.

So I'm out right now. Went to Academy and headed to Target, came from South CS.

I think the roads are fine. Sure some things will freeze again overnight but for the most part, things are dry. Based on this will probably let my child drive tomorrow. I had expected it to still be a lot worse. The sun has (and is) done wonders

Maybe just go outside and look for yourself. The roads are fine. I swear, people just look for a reason to worry. Go to work, go to school. Enjoy the cooler weather while it's here.

Completely reasonable though- still a ton of water on roads out here and ice/slush on bridges

Roads in town mostly fine this morning, except the proud few who appear to have run sprinklers or had water leaks onto the roads.

My drive in was completely clear from Robertson County once I got onto pavement. The county road was still a little slippery from the melt yesterday.

I think what a couple people are failing to acknowledge is that teaching my kids risk tolerance and how to do dangerous things carefully is my job and not the schools.

What I expect from the school district is that they return my kid home to me each day in the same if not better condition as they were dropped off in. If a single ice cube on the road creates a condition where they think "Hey maybe we haven't reasonably trained all of our bus drivers on how to drive on ice, and our tires aren't the best, and we have built in cold weather days anyway" I would rather keep my kid a home and use it as a chance to fulfill my part of the responsibility as a parent to educate them.

I may choose to take my kid in my car to go enjoy the cold weather, but that's on me. I learned to drive on mountain roads so I know I can handle it.

Who, exactly, is failing to realize that you as a parent can make decisions for your child? Be specific.

Hmm! My primary expectation of school district is that they educate my child.

My primary wish is that the school educate my kid but my primary expectation is that the district will take care of the district.

It varies by the district but 99.9% of schools will take care of themselves first and foremost. Schools cancel because of liability and ADA funding concerns, not because they think it is in the best interest of students. That might be a tertiary benefit but it's not the driver.
