Did they say out of an abundance of caution? That's my favorite

Normangee ISD will be closed on Monday (due to expected weather conditions). Potential for Tuesday closed as well.

Bryan has canceled school Monday.

A&M & CSISD said they will announce by 5pm Sunday.

I went and bought wine (and wine only) tonight. Maybe should have picked up a second bottle lol.

Out of an abundance of caution is one of the more stupid, redundant phrases around … caution implies an excess of safety on its own. Doesn't need any abundance..

It was pretty crowded at 10 am. But we got all the stuff on our list. Pharmacy was busy too.

I went to Pet Smart on University after. There was one register open and 14 people in line and all I needed was a bag of dog food because I was running out anyway. And good lord if every person in front of me didn't have some sort of checkout issue with whatever they were buying.

Who would have thought the grocery shopping experience would be quicker and more convenient than the pet store.

Then I went to Spec's next door which was also easy in and out. I guess the people in south CS are all just a bunch of Panicans.

Got the call too. The only grace I will give them is that they have schools in the Dallas area that will have it much rougher than us, and it's probably easier to close than all rather than pick and choose. But since Bryan has already announced they're also closing Monday, I'm sure CS will follow as well.

Everyone has been talking about the grocery stores. I bet Total Wine was packed.

My husband and I were at Total Wine yesterday. One of only a few customers. Shelves fully stocked. Helpful and friendly staff that helped ensure we were ready for a long weekend at home.

I visited the Spec's on Harvey and University Thursday evening (because one doesn't carry a rye whiskey that I like, and the other doesn't carry my favorite beer.) Neither was in any way crowded, and shelves were fully stocked.

I work nights, and usually do my grocery shopping at around 7 am on my way home from work. Tejas Center HEB was far busier than usual Friday morning, and the cashier said it had been even busier right after they opened at 6.

I am shocked that HEB here in town and Houston areas are opening at 8AM Sunday. That doesn't seem safe to me at all.

Apparently people in Normangee dont panic buy. I stopped by BB yesterday to grab a few things I needed (for stew & cornbread). Shelves fully stocked. The thing I saw people checking out with the most? Frozen pizzas and ice cream.

Things must have changed. In previous hurricanes country folk swarmed our HEBs, apparently having cleaned out their smaller stores quickly. Granted this isn't a hurricane…

Boonville Kroger had plenty of stuff this morning. Certain items were a bit picked over, but they had alternative items.

For example, organic berries were wiped out, but they had plenty of the pesticide-covered ones. :-)

Plenty of other fruits and vegetables.

Biscuits were very picked over, but they still had a lot of them.

It was the usual slow Saturday morning traffic in the store, and they were restocking.

Is it worth shutting water off overnight when the temps fail to the teens Monday or so? Right now the plan is just keep external faucets covered and drip interior faucets with the cabinets open. Thoughts?

outside faucets covered should be fine
no need to drip anything inside unless the house is vacant and heat is not on in that case cut the water off

this isn't very cold

Temps have trended warmer by a bit for Sunday and Monday, so cabinets open and occasional use should be fine. If you have a faucet or toilet on an exterior wall you can just flush some water through it every now and then if you're concerned.

This is what I do. I'm an old so I'm up every few hours anyway. Just exercise the faucets on exterior walls for a few seconds (including hot water) and you should be fine. If below 15 or so for extended periods, I drip them. Had frozen pipes before, not gonna take chances.

The same in Franklin. My wife ran into town yesterday for grated cheese and said the store was well stocked.

My hypothesis was the vast majority of shoppers there live out in the country and are generally more self sufficient and better prepared.

That was Round Rock ISD several years ago. Made the call based on the road conditions at 5am and ignored the forecast where the storm came through around 8 am. Kids already at school/on buses when they decided to close for the day. But not really, because they still needed to care for the kids that were already there until their parents could actually come get them.

I remember that. Terrible. Buses were sliding off the road. It's always better not to gamble with the lives of children. Just cancel.
