What I expect from the school district is that they return my kid home to me each day in the same if not better condition as they were dropped off in. If a single ice cube on the road creates a condition where they think "Hey maybe we haven't reasonably trained all of our bus drivers on how to drive on ice, and our tires aren't the best, and we have built in cold weather days anyway" I would rather keep my kid a home and use it as a chance to fulfill my part of the responsibility as a parent to educate them.
I may choose to take my kid in my car to go enjoy the cold weather, but that's on me. I learned to drive on mountain roads so I know I can handle it.

The point being exposing my kid to dangerous situations so they aren't "soft" is my job and not the schools.
I understand that I did use the word "choose" in the post, which I guess you've latched on to, but to make the leap from "Hey, I don't think the schools should gamble with my kids safety" to "People don't understand that parents have the right to choose" is a bit much.
It's like reading the post and seeing that I used the word "training" and saying "Who, exactly, are we failing to require a driver's license to drive a school bus?" Be specific." It's an odd leap.

I'm not going to comb through the whole thread but on the previous page Didler_44 made a post, right above one of yours, saying something along the lines of people were being too cautious. There were others, not all in this thread.
Honestly I'm not going to keep doing the mental legwork for you until I do actually slip up and say something wrong and you finally get your "gotcha" moment. Since I was generally agreeing with your previous posts, I'm not sure why you honed in on my post for your shtick. Maybe you are misreading it. Maybe I didn't have enough coffee and didn't communicate well. You're probably misreading it.

You're assuming that everyone has that option.
Because of the way that the district attendance zone are split, that's difficult for a lot of families.
Give me a realistic explanation of how someone doesn't have that option.
In my view, there are 3 options. Every choice has a consequence. Let your kid ride the bus- maybe there is an accident. Drive your kid to achool- maybe you are late to work. Keep your kid home- maybe you get a truancy letter.

I generally try to not get in debates on here, but I do agree with Stupe - not everyone has the option to drive their kids to school. Some families may only have one car, or none at all (which is probably more than we realize). Some parents may have to be at work before they can drop their kids off to school. Some days it just may be circumstances that arise - like yesterday I was not able to drive my kiddo to school because I had to be at the hospital with someone. I'm lucky my job was flexible, as if I drove my kid to school (which I did until November), I was late to work every day because I wasn't supposed to drop her off until 7:50AM.
Not trying to debate or argue, I just think there are a lot of situations where parents do not have that luxury. And honestly I hate when school is canceled for the folks who have food insecurities, a lot of times school is where they get their solid meals.

Some people only have 1 car and the breadwinner leaves early, too early to drop a kid off and have them wait outside school.

We are fortunate that we don't use the bus and have jobs that are flexible. We also have friends that are not in that position and do have to rely on the bus to get their kids to school. Some don't have the "be late" option. It's be at work or don't have a job. That's just the reality of it.
It's not a black and white issue concerning transportation and jobs.
An accident with a bus load of kids in freezing temperatures isn't just an "accident". It's a bunch of kids in the elements and not all of them have suitable clothing. I would rather the district error the side of caution and use the built in weather days instead of chancing that happening.
This isn't the north where driving on icy roads is normal. It's not even the panhandle. It's an abnormality and it needed to be treated as such.
