It was incredibly stupid of Morey to let parsons be a RFA. If they had brought bosh over with him under his rookie contract then perhaps they would have played together and have seen the potential and taken a bit less. If nothing else you get one cheap year out of him where you have a great lineup. Now Houston gets one or the other at most. If Lebron holds out too long the rockets might get neither.
Harris/Vince/Parsons/Dirk/Chandler with Monta Ellis as a 6th man isn't exactly terrible.

Unless they changed it, the rule was that when the player signs the offer sheet, his cap hold goes to the offer sheet number. Utah was ****ed over by Portland with this rule on the Wesley Mathews contract.
The reason being that a player is now going to get that salary no matter what.

I thought Rockets had to renounce Parsons in order to have enough cap space to offer a max contract to Melo, Lebron, or Bosh and then re-sign Parsons using the Larry Bird exception?

They can't renounce him and keep his Bird Rights. If you renounce him, you lose the Bird rights.
But we don't really know what Houston needs to do because they still haven't executed the super secret trades they totally had for Jeremy Lin, so we don't know how much cap space they really have.

Because he is smarter than everyone else and you can't understand it, you must just trust him.
This move alone doesn't make them serious contenders, but it definitely makes them better. And the Mavs didn't really have the option to make a single move and be serious contenders, so I'm not sure why that would be the baseline

Nets paid more than $90 million in luxury tax this past year. For reference, that alone would rank first in team salary, and when compared to all other teams salary+tax would only rank behind the Knicks ($124M) and the Heat ($94M).

Why is Ellis the 6th man?
Because Ellis would be a fantastic 6th Man. Much better than Carter would be.
Same reason Ginobili and Terry were 6th Men and came off the bench behind inferior players.
