Someone needs to explain this trade to me. Forbes for two close to worthless assets.

Hernangomez has a non guaranteed contract for next year. So we take a look at him and if we don't like him we cut for nothing.

Trading a player that wasn't getting consistent playing time (until the recently to show him off for a trade). Opens up more time for others for us to develop. I think this move means we are accepting the season likely won't lead to a play in. And maybe in 2028 Denver isnt that great and the 2nd rounder looks better. Tank on Spurs.

Hernangomez has been in the league 6 years, we aren't unlocking some yet to be discovered talent. It is good news for those who want the Spurs to embrace tanking. Forbes is no all-star, but he has far more value than what the Spurs got back.

2028 is SIX years away. I do not recall seeing teams trade picks that far out in any sport.

I think a second rounder for him is right. We really only used him to put up points when our bench had trouble. He could fill it up every now and then. And he shot the three at a good clip. But he wasn't going to get us over any sort of hump this season. He was a free agent after this season anyways, on a guard heavy team with up and coming guards. We didn't see him in our plans and got a second rounder out of it. Hernangomez was simply filler. Nothing more.

Yeah it's a meh trade. Doesn't really move the needle much for anybody but it does show that the Spurs are looking to deal. The 2028 pick is a little weird. I thought the 2025 pick for Demar was kinda far away. I wonder who the coach will be in 2028? That's getting close to Bladerunner timeslot.

2028 gets us past prime Jokic and Murray (assuming they stay that long). Lots can happen with that franchise between now and then. Better that than 2023.

But to your other point, it definitely seems possible that we do other stuff before the deadline (unheard of for the Spurs), Thad the obviously one (although my money is on a buyout). This shows that Wright is continuing to try to build assets. To me, giving up someone who can keep you competitive on a given night shows that we are embracing the rebuild now more than ever.

I thought Forbes was a weird signing to begin with. He doesn't fit the profile of the other guards we have, i.e. good two way players. Maybe Pop really likes what he sees from Primo.

Don't understand the angst on this one. We got a 2nd back for Bryn which is more than we thought he'd be worth at the beginning of the year. Would've liked to get Dozier instead of Juancho but that's okay, this is the Spurs way of opening up an every-day role for Primo which is what I think we all want to see.

Supposedly there was this offer from Deeeetroit. Morey turned it down.

  • To Detroit: Ben Simmons
  • To Philadelphia: Jerami Grant, Saddiq Bey, Kelly Olynyk, Future 1st

Quote:

We'll go deeper into that discussion in a minute, but let's start with the low-hanging fruit first. A rebuilding Spurs team with eleventy-seven shooting guards parlayed the one-year deal Forbes signed this offseason into a 2028 second-round pick. It's hard to see how that one turns out badly for San Antonio. In fact, this is the one way signing veterans can work out really well for a rebuilding team if they can be rolled into draft picks at midseason.

The Spurs also get Hernangomez in the deal, who has hardly played this year and presumably will be waived in the offseason, if not sooner (his $7.5 million for next season is non-guaranteed). San Antonio is still miles below the luxury-tax line and only added $1 million in payroll cash-wise, so think of this as buying a draft pick incredibly cheaply. With four recently drafted shooting guards (Derrick White, Lonnie Walker, Devin Vassell and Josh Primo) vying for playing time, it was also imperative that the Spurs get Forbes out of their way.

Note that the Spurs could also buy out Hernangomez and opt to sign 41st pick Joe Weiskamp, currently on a two-way, to a roster contract. As for Juancho, he might have better offers in Spain than he does stateside at this point; it will be interesting to see where his career pivots.

Let's be honest, has there ever been a name that belonged on the back of a spurs jersey like "Hernangomez"?

Hearing that Philly wants to dump Tobias Harris and Ben Simmons and are demanding 93 Michael Jordan, 2003 Tim Duncan, 1985 Larry Bird, and twelve draft picks.

Spurs 1-0 in the post-Bryn era.

Lonnie 1-9 in the post-Bryn era.

Take it FWIW but Windy said there are teams waiting to see if DJ will be made available (if it were to happen, after this season). It is understood that the two parties involved would expect a very high price for him.
