Basically never an E at this level if you do not touch the ball, regardless of the reason.

A player must make contact with the ball and misplay it to begin the discussion of an error. After that there are other judgment calls that can be made to determine if it was indeed an error.
So a ground ball right through an infielders legs that he doesn't touch is a hit? I guess so in little league.
its still technically the scorers call so it should be ruled an error

Don't have to be in HOF to know the game of baseball or how to sit on an offspeed pitch if you know that is all they are going to throw. There are literally thousands of people like that who will never even visit the HOF. But, I digress.

The announcers likely are on their couch as well. ESPN stopped sending announcers to games during the COVID season. Not sure if they're making an exception for this game.
Not for this occasion, however. They've shown them in the booth several times.

Yeah the rule says something like "ordinary circumstance" or similar language. For some reason fly balls have always been this way, but grounders at infielders -- no that would be an error.
