just to second that, chase is correct. each team has 5 players. in match play all 5 matches count (in other words you don't drop the worst round like you do in team stroke play). a team needs three points to win. there are no ties in match play (with the exception listed at the bottom).
there are several ways a match could end (but always resulting in an entire point being awarded to the match winner, unless the exception listed below has occurred).
In match play a player gets A point for winning A hole (regardless of by how many strokes a player won the hole by). The match is concluded after 18 holes, with the winner being determined by whoever has won more holes. The Match could end prior to 18 holes if it is impossible for the other player to win (ie player 1 is up by 2 after the conclusion of 17 holes). Conversely, if the match is still "all square" (A/S) after 18, it goes into sudden death.
in team match play a 1/2 point could be awarded to an A/S match if the entire team has already won, that is, once a team has won 3 matches, the remaining matches are irrelevant to the overall team effort.
having played competitive golf most of my life, there are a few interesting things about match play. First off, it is a different game from stroke play, and you often find that not all great stroke golf players are great match golf players. I have found that match play tends to benefit the more aggressive golfer. A larger edge also goes to the more psycholigically competitive golfer or intimidating golfer. It is interesting to me that you could actually have lost the round by stroke play, but still win the match. It is also harder to judge a round by simply looking at the score card, as people are forced to take risks that they might not otherwise take in stroke play.
anyway, hope that helps.
go ags golf.
ps I grew up in the same subdivision as BB, he was quite a bit younger than me, but da*n was he good!
