Pretty much every premium format out there, 3D, and high framerate. (I believe 48 and 60 fps.)

Watching on my computer, and it very meh. Of course, watching the original movie at home was very meh, but in the theater was amazing. I'd almost rather have them not do a trailer for it, unless they are going to give you 3D glasses for it and only show it on IMAX.

I still cannot wrap my head around how this Ferngully knock off became one of the biggest money makers of all time.

The first one was a pretty movie, but it wasn't anything new... is there really that much of a following for this movie to have numerous sequels in the works?
I'm in the same boat. I never watched Avatar for a second time. The first watch was awe inspiring, simply for the visuals. I always hated 3D until experiencing that movie for the first time. The story was far from spectacular.

This guy finally posted all the uncompressed, high-quality 1080p versions (in 2.35 aspect ratio), but then also posted the same un-cropped, 4K IMAX version as above, for download, except it's completely uncompressed, making for a whopping 1.24 GB, which looks absolutely incredible...

Saw on reddit that there were only 5,000 screens in China in 2009, when Avatar became the highest grossing movie in Chinese film history.

There are now 60,000 screens in China.

So, this thing might make some money in China.

Same. The whole movie was "meh" to me and I don't understand the big deal.

I mean didn't the guy in the wheel chair have to computer mind warp into the Avatar thingy to join their world? How did that end and how is he still there?

Man in hindsight, I can't get over how cool it was to see a major trailer reveal at the movie theater last week for the first time in what seems like forever

Here we go. Nice 4K screencaps here:

Also question. Avatar made like nearly $3 billion. How much money do you think the actors themselves made from that movie alone.

No idea, but if I'm Sam Worthington or Zoe Saldana, I get gross points on 2-4 in my contract.

Set up for life.

I never saw the original in theaters but watched it for the first time when we first bought a projector.

I might have watched it start to finish a 2nd time but otherwise only popped it in to show off the 3D.

I'm sure this will be beautiful, but I fully expect a ridiculously stupid plot, cheesy heavy handed 'morals' or 'love' scenes, and Lucas level dialogue.

I"m getting old and not the target audience. It also has to play well to a younger audience for Disney to have plenty of gold to still mine.

Long story short - I'll see it in theaters this time damnit, but I'm not going to like it
Staff - take out the trash.

Quote:

The teaser finished its first 24-hour online window with 148.6 million views, including 23 million from China alone, according to Disney and 20th Century.

That's ahead of all recent Star Wars films, including Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Like Avatar 2, the teaser trailer for that film also played exclusively in theaters first.

Not doubting it will make a ton of money, but I bet it will be a pretty average movie, other than the visuals, like the first one.

I'm not defending the derivativeness of the original movie, but it's worth noting that Cameron is on record, multiple times, as saying he did it that way on purpose. He actively chose to use a familiar, tried-and-true story to be the lens through which to introduce us to the relatively complex, unfamiliar world of Pandora. He felt it necessary to do it that way, and you could argue that he was wrong/should've given us something more original, and you wouldn't be wrong either, but you also can't argue with the box office results. That, and it's James Cameron, someone who dreams sh*t up for a living/is responsible for some of the most iconic/original stories of our time. It's not like he racked his brain and the first movie's tropes are the best he could come up with. Again, he actively chose to go down that path.

All of this to say, now that we're familiar with this world, I'm betting the sequels will feature more original stories. Sure, Cameron will likely borrow from other movies/genres, like all filmmakers do, but on the whole, he's more than capable of giving us interesting/original stories on his own. Not to mention, he had an entire "writers room" this time, with different writers writing each of the four sequel scripts, while Cameron served as "showrunner" of sorts, doing the final, cohesive pass on all four in the end.

Saw it at the Chinese Theater with about 900 other people. There were some big claps for Top Gun: Maverick, some legit excitement/quite a bit of cheering for Thor: Love and Thunder, but the crowd absolutely lost their minds for Avatar. To the point where when just the "Lightstorm" logo came up after the 20th Century Studios logo, one guy yelled, "WHAT???!!!" - again at *just* the logo, because he knew what it meant - and then when the rest of the theater realized after the first shot or two, the place just erupted. It was the damnedest thing. Granted, it's also probably just an LA thing, but it was a young-ish crowd too - a lot of 20-somethings - and maybe the first movie really is a big thing for them when they were kids. Either way, it was nuts and totally unexpected.

As for the trailer itself, I thought it was awesome. Hardly any dialogue, but the score was so damn good, and the imagery was incredible. Again, maybe it was just the vibe in the theater or the moment or whatever, but it really landed with me, as simple as it was. It felt like a massive event movie, in a way a trailer hasn't felt in a long time, not even with Endgame or most of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. I'm not at all saying this will be as good as Endgame, or is even as remotely cherished as Star Wars. It's just that there was a wonder and anticipation in the theater during that trailer I haven't felt in forever, and it was really cool to experience.

So ready for this one now.
I imagine the where/when was the big factor here.

My thought about the "zero cultural relevance" argument is always -- well, compared to what?

Funny how everyone always goes straight to the big boys, like Star Wars, Marvel, Harry Potter, etc. All of which have 10+ movies, books, video games, etc. Massive, multi-platform franchises.

The only fair comparison is against other single movies.

How many theme park lands are out there based on a SINGLE movie?

We'll see in 2028 where this stands in pop culture.

Got a reaction in my theater as well. And saw dozens of clips on Twitter of massive reactions around the world to the trailer.

This is not an LA thing.

The vocal minority really is the most vocal. 95% of people that see it will never post their opinion on twitter. Our overreaction to what's posted on twitter is almost as bad as twitter itself.

But those of us who thought the movie was just "okay", because we weren't gripped by the plot, don't have our opinions invalidated just because it was supposedly intentional. If a master chef makes me Kraft macaroni and cheese, then responds to my critique of it being mediocre by saying that was intentional because he didn't think I would appreciate something more risky... it's still mediocre.

World was interesting. Visuals were groundbreaking. Story and acting were middle of the road. Obviously many people loved the movie; many people love many things. I would be interested to know how popular it would have been had it been released only on streaming services, with no stereoscopic 3D.
