Movies should appeal to your emotions, not manipulate them. District 9 is a good example. It has a simple political message too, but it doesn't hit you over the head with it. And the characters are interesting because they feel real and they have depth to them. That's not the case with Avatar.
Cameron took the easy way out with character design. He gave the Na'vi big eyes for sympathy, cat features (because everyone likes cats), and human lips for sexuality. The result is a perfectly designed alien that works for all emotional elements of the movie (sympathy, romance, etc.)
So yeah, it's an emotionally effective movie, like all movies should be on some level, but to me Avatar is the really boring and shallow kind of movie.
