They've already wrapped principal photography on 2 and 3. I think it was a couple months ago. So it's all post production from here on out.

I'm fairly sure they're wrapped on at least Avatar 2.

So it looks like they are, indeed, still filming. I saw a fairly recent quote where Cameron said they're 95% done shooting Avatar 3, so they should be wrapping early in the new year, I imagine...

The quote was from September. Not as recent as I thought. So 95% complete on Avatar 3 three months ago doesn't quite add up, and is why I assumed they were all done, but with the way these movies are made, who knows what the process is, exactly...

Avatar 4 is just Sam Worthington using a Go Pro to walk around the Avatar parts of Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Are they waiting on these kids to grow up in real-time so they can turn the Avatar sequels into a blockbuster Boyhood?

Can't believe this is the same guy who made Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, Terminator 2, and True Lies in a 10-year period.

Am I the only one that doesn't care at all about these sequels?
I know the box office performed well enough, but was there ever a desire (other than James Camerons' own) for sequels? I just don't see how such a huge investment has been made on all this Avatar crap (multiple sequels, theme park, etc) with only one mediocre film from a decade ago to go off of. What am I missing?

Cameron gets to do what he wants given track record. Pandora at Disney Animal Kingdom is awesome. The amount of money all of this has made is all that matters. You're right, the content of the film is nothing special.

Not to mention the fact that it will more than likely be re-released in IMAX 3D at some point before Avatar 2 here in the US.

And I'll be there.

If a film makes money, it's pretty much a guarantee that the studio will desire a sequel.

The original film was visually stunning.... and the story was recycled trope. My hope is that now that Cameron has ripped off Ferngully for the first plot, he'll move onto something original (is any storyline original anymore?) or different enough to make it a match for all the eye candy.

It would be so disappointing for him to waste the last decade on a storyline that resembles "Lord of the Rings" or something similar only with blue cat people set on Pandora.

Visually stunning, revolutionary use of technology, have never seen it all the way through since I saw it in the theater.

Should have had the movie end with the destruction of the native's big tree structure as a cautionary tale of man's insatiable quest for power and belief that we own everything.

I'm sure it will do fine in the box office, but if you ask 100 people to name a single character from Avatar, I would suspect fewer than 3 could do so.

I saw Avatar for the first time last year. I was surprised at how bad it was. I remember how big a deal it was when it came out, and all the $$$ it made. I still don't get it. The plot was bad. Acting was terrible. Essentially it was a ripoff of Fern Gully, but with blue people.
