I'd be curious how well Harry Potter would've done without the magic.

I didn't post that to invalidate anyone's opinion, and tried to make that clear. I posted that just to essentially say, "The sequel likely won't be as derivative," seeing as certain people were using the first movie's derivativeness as the criteria by which they were judging the next one.

Got a reaction in my theater as well. And saw dozens of clips on Twitter of massive reactions around the world to the trailer.

This is not an LA thing.
I wasn't saying no one is excited to see the movie outside of hardcore fans at that kind of theater (or the same kind of people on twitter). I wasn't specifying LA, but more the type of audience that would be at that theater in that moment is not the average movie going audience.

I still haven't seen anything as visually stunning as the first movie was in theaters. I think this movie will be the same, based on how long Cameron has been at work on it. We know he wasn't taking that long perfecting the story, Im expecting to see something new on screen again.

If I was Cameron, I would find a way to re-release the original a month out in 3D again.
Anyone that has only seen the movie at home has not truly seen the movie. Imagine the buzz it would generate for the sequel.

Already announced for September.

Theatrical re-release (apparently in both traditional theaters and IMAX 3D) is already set for September 3rd, with remastered picture and sound, which will then hit digital/Blu-ray/4K Ultra HD in the days/weeks after.

For the uber Avatar nerd that I am, I never saw it in IMAX. (Didn't have one near me in 2009.)

Best believe I'll be watching it in IMAX 3D with a big ol' tub of popcorn.

Have seen this trailer in the theater…. Way of the water gave me HUGE flight of passage vibes from disneys animal kingdom. Looked and felt the same. That's an awesome ride. I don't care for avatar, but I'll probably check it out at one point.

What kind of dumb counter is this? The magic in HP is an integral part of the movies, probably the most integral part actually.

I agree with what DallasTeleAg said. Avatar was a regular good movie that I think was inflated because of the cultural push with it and everyone and their mom going to see it in 3D. I've seen bits and pieces of it again when it was on tv, but I've only seen it start to finish once.

I too wonder how it would be received 1)in the streaming age and 2)without the 3D influence.

That all being said, I'll likely see this sequel in theaters because it's taken so dang long to make and I think they're going to make it pretty stunning visually.

This. Without magic being real in Harry Potter, there is no story.

Take the 3D experience away from Avatar and nothing is changed.

I'm glad I saw Avatar in the theater with 3D, it was a cool experience feeling like you were actually in the movie, but I've never had any desire to see it again. The technology/experience is what made the money, not the movie itself.

Is this a real comparison of trailers? Or is the original trailer edited to "match"

Yep. And I even noticed that circular rock formation is seen in Flight of Passage. They developed the ride right around the same time as the movie was being made, so I'm sure all those locations are from The Way of Water.

Incredible ride, btw.

James Cameron developed the movie because of the world of Pandora, the Na'vi, and the visuals/3D.

As in the clip I sent earlier, this movie wasn't made for its plot. So if you remove the 3D/theater, you're removing one of the primary reasons the movie was developed in the first place.

Basically, the original argument is like saying "I wonder if Star Wars would've been as successful if it aired on tv."

I was talking about the story, but you knew that.
Brian Earl Spilner

But that's my point.

Movies are not just the stories they tell, but the way they tell them.

If you take the time travel out of BTTF, it's just another zany high school comedy.

If you take the special effects and space setting out of Star Wars, it's just Excalibur.

And so forth.
Brian Earl Spilner

AG
And to be clear, not saying you have to love the movie, or saying you're wrong about the plot criticisms, but my point remains.

If you enjoyed the visual spectacle and felt transported to Pandora, then the movie did the exact job it was intended to do.

BES you are comparing apples to oranges here, with all due respect.

You're right, because Avatar was created as a way to transport users to another planet via brand new and cutting-edge technology, whereas your LOTR or HP are created with the sole purpose of telling their story, and the technology is just the means to do it.

They are quite different and that's why I'm saying they shouldn't be judged the same. That's really my whole point.

It's not fair to say that Avatar without the 3D technology would be just another movie, because that's kind of the whole purpose of the movie in the first place.

I both agree and disagree. To just rely on the Harry Potter world, magic, and the blind fandom to create movies does not make a good movie. This is why I think most of the Harry Potter movies are trash.

Take away the names Batman and Joker from The Dark Knight, and you still have a great crime drama.
Brian Earl Spilner

But we go back to the apples and oranges and thing.

That movie is all about plot and characters. But there's nothing inherently interesting or spectacular about that world, visually or otherwise. It's just Chicago. Sure, it's photographed really well and the IMAX looked great, but it doesn't transport you anywhere in the way Avatar does.

They're just totally different experiences.

Btw HP was just an example, I'm not particularly a fan of that series.

In any case this is a discussion that could go in circles forever, so I'll leave it there. The plot will certainly be more interesting the next go round now that the world and characters have been established.

I never saw Avatar originally. Not sure why, I just had a kind of internal disdain for it. Maybe I resented James Cameron for Titanic passing Star Wars in inflation-adjusted box office. So I just latched on to the "it's unoriginal and derivative" argument and never saw it.

My interest was piqued when I went to Disney and rode Flight of Passage, the setting seemed much more interesting than I had given it credit for. So a couple of months ago I finally watched it on Disney+. Holy smokes, what a movie. I do still think there is validity to the criticism of the plot, but IMO the world building is unrivaled. I became a huge fan of this movie and am now really looking forward to the second film.

I guess I probably need to try to see this in 3D on the re-release, right?
