I enjoyed it, thought it was on par with a non-Brody Homeland season.

Also Matice actor is the King in the Dilly Dilly commercials.

They hardwired the detonating phone into the hospital's landline iirc.

I guess that would explain it... but then I think I'm even more disappointed they went that far for a plot device.

The only reason to wire it to the hospital landline is in case the cell towers are jammed... But if you think that is a possibility then why would you require the use of the cell towers to send detonation? Your whole entire plan is foiled if you can't get out of the hospital?

They basically wrote it backwards -- "we need Ryan to chase the leader through the subway tunnels, so how do we get him there? We'll require him to go there in order to detonate the device!"

I'm probably a little overly critical, but I just expected more out of a Jack Ryan series (especially with this cast) -- I didn't see Shadow Recruit, so I've likely been spoiled... but Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present and even Sum of All Fears are competently written. This was just a bad '24' season.

I guess I just assumed that the place they set up to release the radioactive material was in the bowels of the hospital so they patched it in to the landline due to possibility of no cell reception at that location.

Overall really enjoyed it. I don't necessarily get bored or upset when I predict things still to come so that didn't bug me in this show. The chick getting mad about him not telling her the truth after wanting a casual relationship and everything to do with the drone plot was frustrating though.

It was predictable but I think we expect too much in plot twist. I think the phone being jammed being weak but also no way they let them roam in hospital without SS watching every camera and able to find the cerium pretty quick.

Yeah, it's really not a huge surprise that it wasn't on par with the really good TC movies based almost directly from really good TC books.

Just binged it, and I really enjoyed it. At a minimum, it definitely held my interest. Yes, there were plenty of mistakes, but none blatantly stupid enough to make me cuss at the TV. I've seen worse in movies that were still good.

My thoughts (edited after reading this thread):

Jack Ryan goes overboard with the Boy Scout routine, but luckily, it didn't end up making me hate his character. At least he ended up figuring out a way to shoot someone while surrounded by a crowd of people.

Sorry if it offends, but if Abbie Cornish wasn't pregnant when this was filmed, she needs to drop weight. I'm not asking for her to turn back the clock to "A Good Year", but dayum...

Dumbass drone pilot didn't even take the eggs. Dumbass.

Who's the moron who gave a 14 yo girl the Wi-Fi password?

"Maybe you're right, and maybe one day, my black, Muslim ass will be the director of the CIA." Nice!

Very nice "Sum of All Fears" ending in having Clark's country boy counterpart kill the last terrorist, although a knife would have been better.

Just binged it the last 2 days.

Thought it was 10 episodes and not paying attention to that so ep. 8 really got me I was like whoa!!!!

I enjoyed it. A few gaffes for sure technically especially, and then the internet game thing especially with the kids but.....

still i liked it. Even the little bit over the top too good to be real Jack Ryan didn't bug me.

Loved Bunk Moreland (errrr.... Greer)...just the right amounts of wiseass and big honcho who has seen it all.

the gf doctor chick bugged me.... can't put my finger on why. a little too aloof i guess. pretty but almost too quiet maybe. i don't know.

All the bad guys were great. nice little plots and sidestories with the setups and payoffs with bigger plans. it was fairly original when i felt like it was going to be retread of sme other plots a few times.

Speaking of - I thought we were heading into "Eye in the Sky" territory with the drone pilot guy - like that movie where we might have a refuse to shoot situation and then he just goes off the deepend..... that entire plotline confused the hell out of me. I mean plotwise using the Checkovs gun principle - WTF was with the gambling bit, winning like that was BS anyway, the wife banging him, not taking the money, beating him up and leaving and then he goes over there and ....pays off the family...... what's the freaking point... at least TAKE THE EGGS.

Ok so other than the gf and the drone pilot story - well done.

Oh and before I forget... how did the drone pilot not get that those 2 were scam artists.....

I mean I guess he never got that their names were from A Streetcar Named Desire.... Stanley Kowalski and Blanche Dubois..... they were just playing those parts more or less the femme fatale who uses sex and the tough guy who is violent and acts out.

the writers never even really let the viewers in on this I guess we were just supposed to know or something. which I did, but probably not everybody. weird. another lost part of that story really..seems like they never delivered on the punchline there. hmmmm.

just another part of that odd tangent.

Just finished as well. Many of the same thoughts as others have expressed regarding the weird drone pilot plot line.

Also, how does a terrorist leader whose face has been plastered all over the world waltz into the US using eyeglasses as a disguise?

Pretty weak at times but I'll probably give another season a chance... at least for a couple episodes.

Yea, the psychological damage caused by killing people thousands of miles away with the push of a button was very believable, especially if you found out someone was innocent. Everything else that happened to that guy was like a fever dream.

Yeah I think there are two different arguments that have blended into one. I actually thought the drone PTSD story had some potential and didn't mind it as a concept, but what actually happened was really weird.

I really thought the two people at the casino were going to be Russians (or something like that), and that they were going to try and slowly recruit him to work against the U.S. by playing on the guilt he felt and that sort of thing. I really thought that had some potential as a side plot that maybe leads into season two.

But what actually happened was SUPER weird, and just seemed like a distraction from the main plot of the show.

Scam artists isn't really the right word is it? They had every opportunity to take his money (he literally begged them to take it) and they didn't

Good point I just meant like up to something and not legit. Really weird that they were just using personas from a classic movie - but then did not rob him, etc.

Just a complete plot derail really.

Okay yes, agreed. I get the overall idea they were trying to go for, it was just poorly executed. Really my only complaint of the show.

I'm five episodes in. I thought the first two episodes were actually kinda slow and boring, but the third episode picked up the pacing and gave me a bit of optimism here.

I haven't decided whether I like the James Greer character here. I recall him being a Southern boy from the books, but that does not appear to be the case in this series. Still, not a huge deal, and I say that as a huge fan of the books.

Quote:

Plus, can we not get a new enemy to deal with? America vs Muslim country X is tired.
I guess they felt they needed to modernize the story, but dang, they have a whole slew of books with many featuring those big, rascally Russians as the villains. That's also a pretty modern villain thanks to the asinine goings-on in Congress/investigations/etc recently.

database query.... SQL stands for Structured Query Language it is used for querying relational databases.

It's fairly old and yet it is not antiquated as it persists in widespread use. Especially believable the government database would use SQL.

Two problems with what he said though:

1. More often it is pronounced like "Sequel"...not "S...Q...L" and some consider people who say SQL to be novices or younger at least.

and

2. A "SQL query" is redundant - basically saying "Structured Query Language Query" although people definitely say Sequel Query. More of a problem saying SQL Query really because thats the acronym which technically stands for the words.

Although usage tends to vary with MS and Oracle Server world saying Sequel more and IBM Server world saying SQL more for example.

A lot of it stems from the early days when it was proposed as SEQUEL but a trademark on that name saw them change it to SQL but many/most still called it Sequel colloquially.

Probably more than anyone wanted to know.

It was one of many lines that just tried to hammer home that this guy is a super-smart everyday guy that is being thrown into these crazy action-packed situations... except he has a military history where his chopper was suicide-bombed so hell lets just make him the most interesting man in the world.

Watches the Orioles game every night? Check.
Knows the answers to Jeopardy questions? Check.
Can write a program to query different government databases that no IT had been tasked with yet? Check.

The SQL line was just cringe-worthy... Reminiscent of:

Ummm....don't think you guys work in IT, particularly around SQL admins.....SQL Query is absolutely an often used statement in my IT world. Just do a google search and see how many results come back. If SQL query is seriously your complaint about this show and you try to compare it to the unix crap in JP, that's pathetic.
mhayden
How long do you want to ignore this user?
My complaint isn't the method, my complaint is that it was an obviously shoe-horned line to hammer home for the umpteenth time that this guy has brains.

I get that the character is supposed to be a "boy scout" and that he relies on his wits. But it just seemed like the show tried to cram that into every episode like he's the only guy in the FBI/CIA/SecretService that really has a clue of what is really going on.

The actor I can get behind... but his dialogue and the writing is just lacking. I know it's not fair to compare to major motion pictures, but Baldwin, Ford and even Affleck were much more believable as "I'm just an analyst".

For me as a software developer, my complaint would not be that he said SQL query, it is that he said S.Q.L. query. I hear Sequel query all the time, but I have literally never heard anyone say S.Q.L. If someone says that, then they are not developers or are only tangentially aware of database technology.

But like I said, I let it slide as it's not a huge sticking point for the show or the character (it would be if Ryan was a software developer/architect).

Now that Jurassic Park UNIX system thing is a complete joke.

There's a pretty big difference in the two franchises. While Bond got more gadget focused and outlandish in someways with the Roger Moore tenure as Bond, Ryan has usually been much more grounded. Granted Hunt for Red October was kind of on the far end of that spectrum with the caterpillar drive, but Clancy still developed the story in a way that the tech was believable.

Probably one of the few novels by Clancy where it felt a bit too far out there was a book from the Net Force series Night Moves. Iirc there was an induced stroke via the web/net.
