This is talked about in the recap posted by Juan above. In the first 3 minutes as a setup of the show, they explain the different parts of memory and how the severed employees would know what a beach is, but not remember their drive into work. In the very first scene when they give Helly the survey, she can't remember her name but she could name the state of Delaware.

The innies still have some general factual knowledge about the world (e.g., Helly can name the state of Delaware), but no personal specifics (she doesn't remember the color of her mothers eyes)

I took it as Helly just not wanting them to know she is partially to blame for their situation. Or her outie, but that's why she's so insistent that they're not the same.

We are so back...

I think we're supposed to be unsure whether or not Helly is actually Helena Eagen, and it may be a while before it's revealed. I do think it is Helly - but her emphasis that the innies and outies are not the same person with obvious disdain could go both ways for who was saying it. But it makes sense she wouldn't want to tell the team who she really is.

I think the newspaper article and them being famous on the outside and causing Severance reform is a lie. The paper was The Kier Chronicle. I loved all the blacked out redacted marks on it though.

The video with Keanu was so weird and amazing... Awesome first episode. Can't wait to see where this goes...

Pretty clear from this screenshot that the newspaper is a fake. The picture of the group in the car is clearly the same photo that sits on their desks with some slight photoshopping (swapping Irv and Dylan).

Really good episode. The Helly question will be interesting to explore… as soon as she said "gardener" my wife said out loud "gardeners don't work at night…" and then Irv said the same.

Dylan's one liners make me crack up.

I feel like this show is building to a fever pitch in the way that Industry did… started off not getting much attention and then wham everyone is watching it. I started Apple TV like 2 weeks ago and it's crazy how much great content I have to catch up on.

That picture is ridiculous. Has to be from a ticker tape parade for Apollo astronauts in the 60s. The caption reads "Hero Lumon employees were celebrated on Sunday for exposing the nature of severed work"

I think the central question is going to be whether it's Helly or Helena down there. I tend to think it's Helly and she's just ashamed to be an Eagan.

Also, calling Milchick Mr. Milkshake had me cackling

Dylan is hilarious because at first thought, everything he gets outraged about seems so random and inconsequential.

But this show always forces me to stop and reframe the way I'm thinking about things. To view it from their perspective. And suddenly his outrage seems 100% valid and important. I mean....they have no frame of reference for actual good food so to him "an egg bar is the best". They only know each other, Milchick, and Cobel, so to him "Burt is an outsider and therefore dangerous." And he doesn't get to choose what belt he wears everyday, so he probably watches the elevator doors open, wonders what belt his outie chose, and glances down at it. Does it so many times it becomes a sort of game to him.

I loved how they are playing this rebellion off as their plight to get marginally improved incentives.

The newspaper is definitely fake, but I wonder if that is the title of Ricken's other book. I assume not, but there were some theories about what is up with him and that could play into it.

Either they brainwashed her innie, or her outie know who she is and doesn't want to sabotage the company. It could be a red herring, but I think she'll be the heel this season.

I had this thought when I watched it last night, that the photo was almost certainly a real photo from some parade in the past. Maybe a presidential motorcade parade?

Great episode. So glad to finally this show back.

Theory: Ms. Wong (the kid) is a younger clone of Ms. Casey (building off the theory someone had earlier in the thread about Ms. Casey potentially being a clone of Mark's wife.)

Just knocked that one out, which is definitely interesting, but then I followed it up with the one below, and I would argue it dives even deeper, is more comprehensive, and presents some pretty big theories for the show as a whole that feel so incredibly spot on, at least at this stage. I highly recommend giving it a watch as well…



Either way, I love having a show again that begs this kind of exploration. It feels very Lost-ish in that regard, and I can't wait to watch these recaps every week/discuss theories here in the thread over the next nine episodes.

Good, place-setting first episode. So glad to have this show back. As usual, lots of questions.

-Mrs Huang could be another piece of evidence for my half-baked clone theory I mentioned a few pages ago.
-Torn on whether Helly is actually her outtie or just embarrassed about who she really is. My initial thought was the latter after everybody else explained their experience, but I would think the innie Helly we saw from S1 would disclose that outtie identity so the group could use that info.
-Do we know what happened to Sobel or the baby?
- Lol at Milkshake. Lots of funny moments this episode.
-So I guess there are other MDR teams and departments? Did we know this already? I always assumed it was just our core four.

I have not watched this episode yet, but in one of the S1 recaps I watched it referenced some extra info beyond the episodes themselves. Apparently the writers created some material I think was called the Lexington Letter which suggested there are additional MDR severed employees at another Lumon office location

Way too obvious helly is Helena, only thing that gives pause is they made it so obvious. No cameras/mics bc Helena is there. Only info she didn't get is Irv's info about Burt, which is an odd part of the story that I have no doubt will somehow be important. What happened to make Irv come back when he was determined to leave?

They're not gonna keep the same main narrative for another season with the gang vs lumen.

Bet Helena develops a thing for innie Mark. All kinds of juice there between Mark innie outtie, Casey, Helena, and the Eagans.

The baby is fine, Ms. Sobel left her in a room and Mark found her right before he found the picture of him and Gemma/Ms. Casey

Don't know what happened to Ms. Sobel yet other than Milchick saying she doesn't work for Lumon anymore
