I have a favor to ask my straight friends through all walks of life. Please go see "Bros". It was hilarious, but most importantly it is the first accurate depiction of gay life in entertainment ever. A lot of you have always been fascinated by how different our lives are, and here is your opportunity to understand.

You can understand the challenges we face daily, the stigmas we place on each other, the shame we felt when we were made fun of as kids, and you will relate to some degree. It might even make you shed a tear in between the moments of laughter.

Bill Eichner, thank you for making me and many others feel seen. Seen through OUR lens, and not some watered down version of what society or Hollywood think we aspire to be.

I've been in 11 weddings in my life. A best man once, and a groomsman 6 times. I haven't ever asked for anything in return but this, please go see this movie! It would really mean a lot to me and many others.

The trailers don't do it justice at all. You will laugh your ass off.

It also makes fun of gay people a lot, which many on here would like.

This is what it mostly looked like to me in the 500 times I've seen it advertised, making fun of gay stereotypes

I would think that the support for the movie should start with the gay community, if they are the target demo. Even they dont seem to be raving to see it, based on the paltry numbers from the weekend.

Wife and I saw it last night. We both really enjoyed it. Thought there were several laugh out loud moments.

By the way, side note to my post above, but there are probably roughly 10 million LGBTQ people in the US, which is more than enough to get this movie to profitability and get more of these made. Especially if they bring some of their straight friends to see it. But one of my gay friends told me a few years ago that there is a often a disconnect between the lesbian and gay communities (which really surprised me), wonder if that might be hurting the numbers some.
For the sake of folks like the op, I do hope it finds more traction, seeing representation is important. And it would be a shame if this sets that course back for any length of time.

Interesting. I could also see a number of straight people not wanting to or having time to see the "gay" movie in theaters, but watching it when it comes to digital/streaming, especially after all the positive word of mouth. I feel like it could do well at home.

Movie looks good. I'll probably stream it with the family since it's football season and no time to go to the movies. Lots of mainstream gay content out there right now along with Dahmer.

That's a good balance.

Dahmer was traumatizing

Evan Peters better win every single award next year for this.

And episode 6 needs to win all awards for writing and directing.

I cried so much watching that.

Haven't heard of this movie until this thread.

Get on IMDb and find this lovely comment

Co-writer and star Billy Eichner has expressed that he does not want conservatives, especially those that voted for the 45th President of the United States and their associates, to see the film, even conservatives who identify as being part as the LGBTQ+ community as he views them as traitors.

Guess I'm not allowed to see it.

I get where he's coming from - "If you're someone who hates gay people, I don't want you seeing my movie" - but A) blatantly assuming all Trump supporters hate gays, and then B) blaming straight people for not showing up (as he did on Twitter today) - many of which are the very straight people he insulted - probably wasn't the smartest strategy.

Ok, I've done some searching myself and can't find mention of it anywhere either. He *definitely* said he didn't want homophobes seeing the movie, in so many words, but I can't find any mention whatsoever of him saying he didn't want Trump supporters seeing the movie. I'm not saying he didn't say it, only that I can't find the actual quote. So yeah, seems somewhat dubious…

I always thought that was a thing. There's a reason the "man-hating dyke" is a cliche/stereotype. I don't really meet any gay men that hate women or are antagonistic towards women. Granted, a lot of that can be loss of trust for men because of abuse or other trauma.

Also... I can't stop thinking of that hilarious discussion about these two groups in Chasing Amy....

Maybe it's cause the movie appears to come across as over the top with all the gay stuff and that turns people off….

Want an example? The Birdcage. Robin Williams and Nathan Lane are absolutely perfect. The movie is hilarious. And it's about a gay couple who have a son who's trying to hide the fact that he has 2 gay parents from his soon to be father in law who's a conservative politician.

And maybe this movie is like the Birdcage. But I'll never know because just based on the trailer I'm going, "ya this just isn't for me."

I saw the movie tonight. 7 total people in the theater.

Meh.

Granted, rom-coms aren't really my thing, but it was just the same formula for any run-of-the-mill rom-com. I did appreciate how it poked fun at some aspects of the LGBT community and made some things over the top, but I can count the number of times I laughed out loud on one hand. The best jokes were about really minor things, and the best individual moment, imo, was a cameo by Debra Messing. I think it could do a decent job of showing straight audiences that gays have a lot of the same problems they do when it comes to relationships.

The entire first half of the movie I just wanted Billy Eichner to STFU. The rest of it was largely uninteresting because it was so formulaic and predictable. Any more detail about what I did and did not like gets into spoiler territory. Yes, there's gay sexual content, but I thought it was pretty limited and tame (and sometimes unrealistic, because the positions they were in wouldn't be, um ... conducive to what they were supposed to be doing). Definitely not kid-friendly, but not too much for adults who aren't prudes to handle.

My final verdict: I really appreciate the effort to make a film I can relate to on a personal level, but I would not go out of my way to watch it again. Once it hits cable I'd probably watch it on TV if it happened to be on.
