very inciteful and well thought out reasoning.

But pretty much just the gay thing for me. Like when Billy E said stop cramming religion down my throat, stop cramming your religion down my throat, don't care for it, not interested.

Eh, I don't at all think that making a gay-centric movie and promoting it are "cramming it down your throat." I'll absolutely concede that Eichner didn't do himself any favors with how blunt and crass he was in his promotion, though.

As for the whole "religion" thing, that's for another thread...

And for the record, personally, I like Eichner, find Billy on the Street hilarious, and even enjoyed his stint on Parks and Recreation. But he should have just written/produced Bros and not starred in it. As stated earlier, this movie needed real star power if it had any chance of doing better than it did at the box office.

Thanks! I think it really writes itself

Girl is on phone taking about date night. Girl "shockingly" meets up with girlfriend. They get hit on. Cue montage of guys with pickup lines and getting turned down creatively (in one instance the girls just look at each other and start making out at the bar). Having lunch with a straight friend they come to the realization that they should be saying yes and having guys buy drinks all night. Montage of double dates and creative ways of leaving together (include repeat of making out at the bar). Montage includes date with a guy and one girl actually having fun. Cue scene where guy unexpectedly calls her back the next day. He wants to hang out, she says shes's gay and fesses up, he says that's cool and apologizes for never even considering it when he and his friend hit on them (cue montage of what should have been dead giveaways), he wants to hang out anyway because she's fun and he's new to the city, she feels bad about leading him on because he's nice and says ok, they start doing things together (maybe she's helping him find straight dates), gf is kind of a passive aggressive ***** to the guy, after they hang out a lot her gf says something about them being really close and there's no such thing as men and women being just friends because men ultimately want to have sex with every woman they know, and then surprise, surprise it's her that can't be just friends. She tells him, he tells her he's cool with being friends and he doesn't want to get in the way of her relationship, she freaks out and says she broke up with the gf even though she hasn't, gf and he both find out, she has an argument with gf about being really confused because she thought she was a lesbian, she loses both, and eventually ex-gf and would be boyfriend run into each other and ex-gf realizes she was maybe a little suffocating and should have been more understanding. Ex-gf gets up and yells at guy, "I can't do this anymore! A woman can only have do many orgasms in one night!" then storms off as all the hotties around start eye ****ing the **** out of him and one immediately sits down with him. Ex-gf and girl reconcile, cue "Hoes before bros," and roll credits. Scenes in credits show them on dates and ultimately getting married with guy as best man for gf.

To show that gays in urban areas really don't care what homophobic people think.
This is what I'm talking about - using it to make this kind of a point, not being all doom and gloom with a punchline. I think we just both have different ideas about how to make that point, and that's okay; I still respect the validity of your viewpoint.

I'm curious how this movie would have done with a less grating lead. Like the guy from thinner guy from Book of Mormon

Since 2010, you have

Crazy Rich Asians
Crazy, Stupid Love
The Big Sick
Silver Linings Playbook
About Time
Trainwreck

that all did pretty well. Rom coms typically go to streaming nowadays though. They are cheap to make and typically do not make blockbuster money. Better suited for Netflix or Hulu.

I will reiterate that Eichner is not the best rep for this movie. He is pretty unlikeable.

Yes, there's gay sexual content, but I thought it was pretty limited and tame (and sometimes unrealistic, because the positions they were in wouldn't be, um ... conducive to what they were supposed to be doing). Definitely not kid-friendly, but not too much for adults who aren't prudes to handle.
Honestly, after seeing a trailer on another board that showed (from behind), two men going down on another man, while another watched and said something "funny"...I was pretty disgusted and put-off. And I am far from a prude. Would say the same thing if it was chicks on a dude. Some things are just straight up pornographic and have no place in Hollywood imo. I honestly couldn't believe it was in a movie trailer.

One day gay men are going to figure out that straight men simply do not like gay intimacy or sexual stuff. It's nothing personal, it's hard wired. Once they figure this out, there is potential to make some really hilarious gay themed movies.

Maybe if they ditched eichner and made it a gay action movie I'd go watch. A gay Die-hard if you will. Then we'd all have a good laugh at the title.

Wow, somehow missed that. Yeah, they're just shooting themselves in the foot at this point. That's a digital movie redeem code, not a practical, inclusive label.

Dude, what you saw in that trailer is about all you see in the entire movie. Many straight men are comfortable enough with who they are that they aren't so easily uncomfortable.

You definitely don't speak for all straight men.

And I didn't want to see Sharon Stone's coot coot, but it didn't stop me from watching Basic Instinct. I am definitely hard-wired with an aversion to lady bits. The only minj I want to see is Ginger Minj.

Nonetheless, straight or even lesbian sexual stuff isn't a dealbreaker for me if it's in a movie because the LGBT community doesn't generally have a lot of societal hangups about sex. It's just sex.

Let's say hypothetically a BIPOC plays a flute. People like my neighbor will take that as a political attack. Same as a LGBTQ+ couple shown in a movie would be seen as sexualizing a movie

In his mind there are two sexual preferences (straight and political) and two ethic groups (white and political)

If you're on the fence on whether you might enjoy this movie go watch,

Call me by your name and I love you Phillip Morris….streaming now!

If you liked them, Bros here you come.

Creeped out, skip it.

I actually know the guy that Jim Carrey plays in I love you Phillip morris, quite the story, and true.

I disagree. Those movies highlight gay trauma. And also aren't a comedy. Call me by your name is about the pain of not being able to be with who you love due to societal pressures. Armie hammers character marries a woman, leaving both heartbroken.
One of them is a dark comedy. Thanks for the spoiler on the other, now no one will watch it.

I am saying if you can handle the Gay themes in those two, Bros should be nothing.

No one is mentioning "The Big Sick" which was also fantastic but had limited theater release.

I think this quote from the Variety article really makes an important point:

Quote:

When "Bros" was announced to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, the press release for the movie called it "one of the first romantic comedies from a major studio to feature an almost entirely 2SLGBTQIA+ cast." TV spots for "Bros" prioritized a pull quote calling the film "as hilarious as it is historic." The point here is that "Bros" marketing worked overtime to sell its importance as the first major LGBTQ studio comedy, but aggressively marketing a movie as a glass-ceiling breaker can make it feel like homework for viewers. Many box office pundits agree Universal leaned too much into the film's importance instead of marketing some of the film's comedic set pieces in order to get across that it's a comedy that's, well, actually very funny. Rarely did the marketing highlight the film is from the director of popular comedies "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and "Neighbors," if at all.

I'd compare this to "Get Out" for the horror genre and the impact that movie made with fantastic marketing.

If your movie is marketing only it's "historical importance" and nothing else, no one will think it's going to be good since that's the only thing you're talking about. Bad marketing can kill really good movies (think "Dredd" with Karl Urban).

I think it's less about this film and more of an indictment of movie going as a whole. Most people aren't interested in dropping money on expensive movie tickets unless it is a big blockbuster worth their time. We have so much at our fingertips and COVID has I think made people realize they don't care about going to see smaller films for the price of 2-3 months of a streaming service that provides hours more of entertainment.

I mean good lord Avatar re-release is pulling in more than these films.
