We are all "homophobic weirdos" since we didn't go see it.

He can be a pretty hateful guy on Twitter honestly.

Let me know when they make a movie called "Bears", and then I may consider your request.

and they better be bears, not cubs, not otters, not wolves, or any of the rest of the zoo.

bulls are also allowed.
Straight posters' knowledge of gay people, particularly the ones with negative things to say about us, continues to amaze me.

The good old premptive "if this is not successful then people are ___ist against me and my art is unappreciated" move. Its true that I don't go to theatres much anymore but if y'all come up with a possitive consensus then I'll stream it eventually.

FYI - If you are basing any decision entirely on what you see in the trailers, there are some trailers out containing scenes that are not actually in the film.

Ok, I've done some searching myself and can't find mention of it anywhere either. He *definitely* said he didn't want homophobes seeing the movie, in so many words, but I can't find any mention whatsoever of him saying he didn't want Trump supporters seeing the movie. I'm not saying he didn't say it, only that I can't find the actual quote. So yeah, seems somewhat dubious…
The way it's worded in the IMDB trivia section makes it seem like it was done to avoid their automatic flagging system for inflammatory or untrue statements, mostly not referring to Mr. Trump by name.

Straight men are BORN THIS WAY to be disgusted by gay sex. We are wired from birth to be attracted to women and not attracted to men. Therefore, this movie is NOT for straight men. Simple.

I think most are basing on an extremely unlikable star and marketing completely excluding 90% of the population.

The movie's not rated X. You can enjoy a movie despite it not being about something you're interested in. My wife and I are watching Dahmer despite being disgusted by murder.

Conversely, it is ok to not want to watch this due to the subject matter. People are not bigoted or homophobic for not wanting to watch a gay love story.

If I were gay and made this movie I would WANT homophobes to come see it. Maybe one or two might walk out with a slightly altered view on life.

With that being said I'm not going to see this mainly because I rarely go to the theater but I'll watch it once it hits a movie channel I have.

I agree 100%. I just think it's silly to say a movie isn't "for someone" because of the way the way they were born. Not wanting to see it because of personal preference is what we all should and do practice.

I agree fwiw. I thought movie was fun, but was a lot of inside jokes I got as a gay man that I don't think straight friends were.

This isn't "love, Simon" which was a more universal story anyone could appreciate, empathize with, etc. Unless they really were a bigot in which case they wouldn't enjoy it - in the same way someone who was prejudiced against black people wouldn't enjoy a recent movie like "King Richard" due to its subject matter.

I would think that billy eichner made this movie FOR a certain demographic and if he feels that way it should be perfectly fine for others to feel that way as well. Additionally, according to Billy, straight people not seeing this movie are homophobic weirdos, so you might want to take it up with him if you think straight people not wanting to see it aren't bigoted or homophobic.

I would say Wes Anderson movies aren't for the majority of people I went to HS with. There is an intelligentsia thing going on there that they find resentful.

I'd be curious to read the original quote.

It could be a innocent as something along the lines of "we unapologetically made this movie for LGBTQ+ and if that offends people outside those communities, so be it."

Vs

"We made this film to mock you and both your religions."

People offended by that tweet were never going to watch a gay rom-com.

I agree with him fwiw and I expect most atheists and even some Christians would agree. Practice your religion all you want, I don't need it pressed in my life via govt action or other avenues.

By the way, side note to my post above, but there are probably roughly 10 million LGBTQ people in the US, which is more than enough to get this movie to profitability and get more of these made. Especially if they bring some of their straight friends to see it. But one of my gay friends told me a few years ago that there is a often a disconnect between the lesbian and gay communities (which really surprised me), wonder if that might be hurting the numbers some.
For the sake of folks like the op, I do hope it finds more fraction, seeing representation is important. And it would ne a shame if this sets that course back for any length of time.

Interesting. I could also see a number of straight people not wanting to or having time to see the "gay" movie in theaters, but watching it when it comes to digital/streaming, especially after all the positive word of mouth. I feel like it could do well at home.
In the closet, nice, I see what you did there!

Haven't heard of this movie until this thread.

Get on IMDb and find this lovely comment

Co-writer and star Billy Eichner has expressed that he does not want conservatives, especially those that voted for the 45th President of the United States and their associates, to see the film, even conservatives who identify as being part as the LGBTQ+ community as he views them as traitors.

https://m.imdb.com/title/tt9731598/trivia

Guess I'm not allowed to see it.

I flagged this. Since there is no actual quote or evidence that he said that.

Wait, you mean he posted a tweet about religious people striping rights from people based on religion on the day that religious people successfully ended a multi decade crusade to strip rights from people and calling for further reduction of rights including contraception and gay marriage.
