It's the same crowd that called Desantis a "book banning nazi" for having "Gender Queer", a literal lgbtq cartoon porn book graphically depicting oral sex and sodomy, removed from children's school libraries. Even the most rational, normal, every day democrats I know were wailing about that. It's crazy. Every single dem senator just voted in favor of men crushing women in sports competition and then showering and changing with them afterwards. But remember, we are the backwards freaks lol.

I've never once called Desantis anything of the sort, and I'm 100% for banning books in children's schools that depict oral sex or sodomy. So, no, not "the same crowd" in any way, shape, or form, but the straw man argument is once again telling that you don't have a leg to stand on in this particular argument.

Another thread totally derailed by stupid political comments…never saw that coming.

To be fair, it's kind of a political thread. This thread could be on both Ent board and F16 and fit just perfectly.
To an extent, sure, but this is more a case of what seems to be a not very good movie than something that was bad because it was 'woke' (from what I've seen at least, not gonna bother watching this one anytime soon). Just like with The Acolyte, the discussion around the movie/show seems far more charged than the actual content.

But the bigger point is this never gets us anywhere. Some think a same sex kiss in a PG movie is totally inappropriate and some aren't bothered by it and no one's mind is going to be changed here. All that ends up happening (most of the time) is people digging in farther, calling each other names, and walking away annoyed with the other person.

In reality we'd all probably have a beer, ***** about basketball, and realize that we're of much more similar minds on many topics than the stereotypes we've pre-applied would lead us to believe. I'm as guilty of it as others and for that I apologize, but it's just so rarely a productive dialogue that it gets annoying.

I'll probably regret this comment, but the whole 'voted in favor of men crushing women in sports' is a good example of the gross oversimplifications often used to make everything us vs them.

There's something like 10 trans athletes out of 500,000+ in the NCAA, and despite what the dumbest senator would like you to believe there are not entire high school teams of boys playing in girls leagues. There's lots of room to develop reasonable policies around this (let young kids play whatever, find ways to evaluate if an athlete has a competitive advantage due to physical development in certain age groups, draw a line for scholarship athletes at a certain level, etc.), but instead of even trying to even have those discussions it's become this massive polarized issue that literally decided some elections while being something that affects almost no one. And even if you might not agree with my specific take on that, it's dumb to think that I or anyone else wants physically developed men playing women's sports because some senators voted that way.

You can apply 'the same crowd' in dozens of ways to make anyone sound stupid and extreme, but most people's views are far more complex and nuanced than that. And the more distracted people are fighting amongst themselves the less attention they pay to what's going on with the people actually pulling the strings.

I am sure, based on your posts, you're a feminist.

How on earth do you reconcile your feminist side with a biological male trucking a biological female?

Dude.

Chill.

Did you even read his post?

"Draw a line"

"Develop reasonable policies"

"At a certain level"

I'm NOT advocating for letting biological males compete against biological females in any meaningful way. Especially in high school and above, and especially not in major sports. I'm 100% for protecting biological females in that regard, their safety, their scholarships, etc.

But if some fourth grader who thinks he's a girl wants to play on a girls soccer team, and isn't a physical threat in any serious way... fine.

You would think, when I said earlier...

If Disney was out there trying to brainwash your kids into transitioning, or getting gender-affirming surgery or whatever, I would be right there with you. Because that's something that can have actual, negative, irreversible effects on them.

... that I would be on your side.

But no, like a handful of people here, you don't read ****, you ignore all nuance, and instead jump immediately to the most extreme conclusions. In other words, you're doing EXACTLY what he's critiquing, which is falling into this insane, chest-beating, frothing-at-the-mouth, "my boys are muscled up beats" nonsense over something that affects next to no one.

THAT'S what my "amen" was in regards to - calling out the ridiculous tendency on this board to otherize, polarize, and group together anyone who isn't on the extreme right as evil libs, especially when I've said probably a hundred times now I've never voted Democrat in my life.

Had he said "Hollywood" instead of "Disney", what would your response be?

Something like "Sure, Hollywood leans slightly, maybe moderately left, but you f16'ers are just so extreme right wing (for basically just wanting your children to have a similar country, culture and upbringing to what we were all fortunate enough to experience) that Hollywood and MSNBC just SEEM solidly left leaning".

I kid TCTTS, but you know there's a little accuracy there.

If Disney was out there trying to brainwash your kids into transitioning, or getting gender-affirming surgery or whatever, I would be right there with you. Because that's something that can have actual, negative, irreversible effects on them.

But an eight-year-old seeing two cartoons of the same sex kiss for two seconds, or seeing a mixed race dwarf or whatever, is simply NOT worth the outrage some of you spend on this crap. To that end, I just find it so incredibly weird how much space this stuff takes up in your heads.

Especially seeing as not a single bit of it will turn your kids gay or have any negative impact on them whatsoever.

You're the ones turning it into a big deal by endlessly *****ing on the internet or freaking out about having to explain some of this stuff to your kids. When, in reality, the explaining simply doesn't require the amount of drama (and apparent trauma) you're giving it.

If anything, being exposed to some of this stuff, your kids are going to grow up with more empathy for others and not thinking that seeing gay people depicted on screen or whatever is nearly as taboo or as big of a deal as their parents do.

That, and if you have a problem with two, same sex cartoons kissing in front of your kids, you should have the same problem with two, heterosexual cartoons kissing on screen. Anything else is either hypocritical or the mindset of the religious right trying to bend the world to their morals and their liking.

Now, has Disney taken some of this stuff too far at times, especially with the lazy "girl power" stuff?

Absolutely.

But more so in ways that I have problems with creatively and thematically - which I've expressed here numerous times - not in any tangible ways that are going to negatively affect our youth. Yes, it sucks that our kids aren't getting their versions of the kinds of movies we grew up with. I totally sympathize with that. I'm just saying, it has FAR less to do with "woke" than it does with the state of the movie business today, in terms of certain financial realities, the Big Tech takeover, streaming, studios being far less willing to gamble on original ideas, etc.

Guys, you're the ones turning it into a big deal but I'm going to write a 25 paragraph chapter on why you are turning it into a big deal.

I would argue once you have men winning gold medals in women's combat sports in the Olympics, I don't really care how few people are doing it, the men competing in women's sports issue has jumped the shark. Much like this thread. If it's so few people doing it, then voting to change it doesn't upend anything except giving women a better chance at succeeding in sports.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to say biological sex determines who you compete with, and if you are in the one in a million intersex category, you also compete with the men. Otherwise just stop segregating sports at all and let the best play.

I also acknowledge this is a giant derail and strawman argument to what was being discussed.

This thread really has it all. 10 pages, 2 people have seen the movie, probably only 2 people that posted ever cared to anyway, and it somehow devolved into trans athletes and "my son benched 260 lbs last week."

Hang it in the TA fkn Louvre. (Of which there are many threads hanging).

Back to the actual movie. I'll admit I have not seen it and never intend to. But I read though some of the IMDB reviews for grins and this made me laugh:

Quote:

Gal Gadot: Evil Queen or Instagram Influencer?

Now, let's talk about Gal Gadot's Evil Queen. You'd think that playing a narcissistic, beauty-obsessed villain would be an easy fit for Hollywood, but somehow, even with all the pouting, dress-swishing, and over-the-top glowering, she ends up about as menacing as a fashion blogger with a bad attitude.

Her obsession with being "the fairest of them all" is laughable when you realize that, well... she already is the fairest of them all. No offense to Snow White, but if the mirror told me that Gal Gadot wasn't the hottest person in the kingdom, I'd be smashing that thing to pieces too. The real villain here is the mirror's manufacturer.

As of one of the two people on this thread who has actually seen the movie, y'all are blowing this way out of proportion. It's an average retelling of Snow White.

While Gal Gadot is very attractive, part of the reason she is no longer considered the forest in the land is that her beauty is only skin deep. The Magic Mirror notes that Snow White is genuine and kind to everyone and that is what puts her over the top as fairest in the land.

I personally think the idea that how you treat people is important and there is more to beauty than just looks is a good message.

I generally agree with this message as well. I think most would.

It's funny to me though that in real life these actresses seem to be the opposite. This Ziegler gal seems to be not genuine and not kind in real life; seems to be a real c word, actually, which makes her extremely ugly.

Meanwhile, I've never heard anything bad about Gadot, but maybe she's a ****bird too? Don't know.
