His color, being the lone black golf superstar definitely helped. His story, of being raised to be a golfer helped, too.Aggie Dad 26 said:

The guy won 4 consecutive majors in a row. Let me say that again, in a row. The guy won 10 majors before he was 30. Who cares about his skin color?Aggie Dad 26 said:BigRobSA said:His color, being the lone black golf superstar definitely helped. 100%
If he had been white his popularity and the media attention would have been half of what it was. Its no different than with Clark. Yet so many have an issue with her
Its a double standard

There have been other black golfers. He's not Jackie Robinson here. Tiger became popular because of his incredible talent. Being half black is just a footnote on the story, not a part of the main plot.
It's like saying Sandy Koufax benefitted from being Jewish instead of recognizing he was one of the greatest pitchers of his generation who just happened to be Jewish.
Nobody on this thread has suggested that Tiger's popularity was "because" of his skin color. The question was if it had anything to do with it.TXAG 05 said:Kvetch said:BigRobSA said:His color, being the lone black golf superstar definitely helped. This. Tiger became popular because he was a young guy doing incredible things on the golf course like the 15 stroke win at the US Open and the Tiger Slam. His skin color brought more eyes to his accomplishments, sure, but to say he was popular because he had dark skin is just wrong.
No only was he a winner, he was doing things no one else was was able to do.DBird said:

Some of you are obsessed with putting these women down. We get it. Of course they can't hang with the men. That's the very reason men shouldn't be allowed in women's sports. Why do we need to keep bringing that up? That's pretty damn obvious.
Caitlin Clark is a badass. So is Paige Bueckers. The WNBA players are obviously extremely jealous of Clark and her success and notoriety (and her being white), which is stupid since she has brought a whole new audience to their league. As a girl dad whose daughter plays basketball, I like watching Clark play. She is awesome.
The NBA and WNBA are majority black players, by a lot. Why is it that the good white players in the NBA aren't hated by the black players like they are in the WNBA?

Because women are petty. Black women are by far the most petty

Most don't care about the WNBA, but I agree with you. I will watch Caitlin Clark play regularly. My daughter likes Paige Bueckers. I'd rather watch Clark play than any NBA game now.No Spin Ag said:WestTexasAg said:

Caitlin is fun AF to watch, and thanks to her, I now know that many in the WNBA (white, black, whatTFever) are also fun to watch.
The haters will hate, and will look for reasons to express their hate, but the fact is the WNBA is doing better now than ever and I think it's only getting started.

Fever-Sky averaged 2.7M viewers on ABC, peaking at 3.1M.

I could see it getting popular like US Soccer until a handful that get all the coverage become insufferable complainers to the point where people go back to not caring. Like with US Soccer

its apparently not as obvious as you think if we're still having this discussion. I vividly remember ~20 years ago when this site didnt have separate basketball forums for the men and women, and so I was forced to read thread titles from the womens fans.WestTexasAg said:

Just a small bucket compared to the masses Tiger converted into golf fans. Not to mention the change to what it takes (weight training) to be a professional golfer.Quote:
Who cares? The 10s of thousands of African Americans that became fans of golf over night
USWNT became popular because the team represented the US and won consistently (definitely wasn't for the aesthetics). People lost interest when the team became more about themselves than representing the country; that's when interests started to wane.Quote:

The WNBA should have immediately ejected this woman for this non-basketball attack on Caitlin Clark.

Maybe the WNBA will become like the NBA in the late eighties and nineties. If that's the case, where do I sign up.
