No, not 90%. Race certainly played a factor, but it was maybe 20%. As El Gallo Blanco said, it was his age and playing style. There have been other black golfers. He's not Jackie Robinson here. Tiger became popular because of his incredible talent. Being half black is just a footnote on the story, not a part of the main plot.
It's like saying Sandy Koufax benefitted from being Jewish instead of recognizing he was one of the greatest pitchers of his generation who just happened to be Jewish.
To equate these two is laughable. Tigers popularity is 90% due to his skin color.
