Yes, being white helps. I think being a woman helps in general.

She is one of the best players to come through the college ranks. Race or sexuality doesn't really matter in her talent level, which is undeniable.

As for marketing the United States is 58% white and 19% black. So, it makes some sense that she would draw a larger market. Why wouldn't the WNBA try and capture some market from the white audience? If you were selling press on long eyelashes, would you market to white males or black women?

This is a wildly bad take. Cannot believe it got this much star traffic.

She is very popular, especially compared to anyone else playing in the WNBA. And she looks more like most girls who play on basketball teams in their hometown and watch her games on TV than most any other WNBA player. Hence her appeal to the masses, which everyone is now shocked are whiter and straighter than what modern commercials would have you believe.

She is selling out arenas and has been doing so for over a year now. She sold out a preseason game in Dallas. She isn't Lebron but she instantly became one of the richest women in sports after her first shoe deal the other day, as a freaking rookie. Tickets for some of her games on the secondary market were rivaling or surpassing NFL secondary market ticket prices.

Serena's last match finished around midnight in the round of 32 in the US Open, against an opponent many serious tennis fans have never heard of. It's not like she announced, "Hey y'all, I'm going to lose so come out tonight!" prior to the match.

And then there's the inconvenient fact that Arthur Ashe Stadium holds like 23K at max capacity, which makes it hard to draw 55 thousand.

But clearly, whitey didn't come out in force for Serena's last match because racism.
