Just put it in perspective...

When Altuve came to Houston, the Mexicans loved it. It even got more enticing when they added Jeremy Peña and Lance McCullars. Now, they're in HEB commercials and everybody love it.

When the Angels brought in Ohtani, ticket sales to Angels games soared. Later, when he moved on to the Dodgers, the same thing happened.

So now, the WNBA has an emerging all star who doesn't looks like the rest of the league. She bringing a different demographic to the games and that's causing a problem???

What's the difference? I think you know the difference.

I'm confused. Altuve is Venezuelan, like seemingly half the MLB. Why were Mexicans so excited?

Likewise. Is Lance McCullars Latino?

So back to the point... YES, Ms. Clark is popular because she's white. HTH

She's popular because she is the second coming of Larry Bird, in female form. She is incredibly talented and fun to watch.

I guess I don't get the correlation, since Dominicans and Cubans are also very well-represented in the league. Maybe if he was, like, Mongolian? They could call him "The Gerbil" or "Benghis Kan".

I never thought of that but it fits. That's how I'm going to refer to her from now on, as the female Larry Bird.

The Indiana Fever have surpassed their home attendance from last year in only 5 games.

Quote:

The Fever have brought in 82,857 fans to their five home games so far for an average of 16,571 fans per game. Those 82,000-plus total fans have already broken last year's total home attendance in Indiana. The Fever hosted 81,336 fans across 20 home games in 2023, according to Across the Timeline

Tuesday night's Indiana Fever-Connecticut Sun game, Clark's regular-season debut, drew an average audience of 2.13 million viewers, ESPN announced, making it the most watched WNBA game in almost 23 years.

This isn't like Laettner being on the Dream Team. She is probably the best female basketball player in the world, possibly ever (as of right now). Anyone with a smidgen of basketball IQ would have her on that team.
I just looked up WNBA stats for the first time ever.

Clark is 14th in points per game, 25th and rebounds per game, and 4th in assists per game. Her team is 3-9.

Those are respectable numbers, but not "best in the world" numbers.

Dude.

She's a rookie point guard on the worst team in the league that is #4 in assists in the league, has a 38% 3pfg%, and a shot release time that is literally as fast as Steph Curry.

Have you watched her play?

I watched about 5 minutes of women's basketball last year.

The point is not "is she good"? The poster was claiming that she is the best player in the world RIGHT NOW, and the numbers just don't support that.

The fact she's #4 on assists is incredible, if you'd watch clips of her and her team. She'd be #1 if her teammates made all the "dimes" she dishes. Remember, it's women...playing basketball...so they miss a lot of those would-be assists.

Yes, she should be on the Olympic team. Hell, as a captain.

As much as I'd like to see Clark on the Olympic Team, in the end, it really doesn't matter. Team USA will easily win Gold with or without Carter.

There will just be less eyeballs on Team USA as they do it.

It wouldn't surprise me if NBC pushes to have her added. Too many good story lines and too much revenue to pass up.

The eyeballs are the big thing. Rather than being the main showcase for the gold-medal game and growing the sport internationally, it'll be relegated to some cable channel with little media coverage. Then the current players will be upset nobody cared to watch.

Moving the goalposts. You said she was the best player in the world.

Compare Clark to the WNBA's leading scorer, A'Ja Wilson:

Wilson 28.3 points per game, 11.8 rebounds per game, 2.6 assists per game, 41.7% 3 pt, and 50.8% from the field.

Clark 16.3 points per game, 4.9 rebounds per game, 6.0 assists per game, 33% 3 pt, 37.3% from the field.

Clark is objectively not the best player in the world, or particularly close to it.

And yet I could be standing next to Wilson and not even know. I stand by my statement, regardless of stats. She should be on the team.

As mentioned, since she's not, the women's games will fall into obscurity.

It's stupid not to have the most popular WNBA player on the Olympic team.

I would take objection to this.

One thing is for certain, she definitely has the potential to be the best player in the world, very soon.

Michael Jordon wasn't the best player in the league as a rookie, but he was good enough to sign Nike.

He was good enough to sign with Adidas, which was THE premiere basketball shoe at the time. Nike had to practically beg him to sign by creating his very own shoe from the ground up and then stating they will pay the fines to the NBA for him wearing this shoe (because at the time the Air Jordan didn't comply with NBA rules).

Whatever the case may be with Clark, the WNBA and the women's basketball world more broadly are cutting off their nose to spite their face by doing anything but playing her up as much as possible.

A once in a generation (and maybe ever) player shows up and is packing in fans. But instead of just running with it and selling more product, the players and punditry are up in arms about political inanities. Guess they like a world where there isn't much money to go around in the first place and everyone makes fun of how little anyone cares about their league. Talk about blowing it.

Its okay for white people to identify with a white person. Just like black people identify with black people.

As far as I am concerned she is the best player in the world, especially since she is the only WNBA player I can name.

Michael Jordan 1984-85: 28.2 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 5.9 apg, 51.5% field goal percentage

Obviously the NBA plays more minutes, but the scoring title was 32.9 ppg by Bernard King (who I can't even remember). Jordan was third, behind King and Bird.

Clark is 14th. She may be the best player in the league soon, but she isn't MJ and she isn't the best player now.

What rank was Jordon in assists? Clark is a PG, not a SG. Her job is to run the offense and jack 3's, not lead the team in points.

How many TD's did Von Miller score in his MVP Super Bowl win?

Could Jordon drain a 3, with confidence, from 29 feet?

Jordon wasn't MVP until 1988.

I'm not saying Clark is Jordon. I'm saying she is every bit as fun to watch as modern day Steph Curry, and the hate is misplaced.

Who, in your opinion, is more fun to watch in the WNBA than Clark?

And, I still stand behind my assertion that she is in the discussion for the best WNBA players in the league, with the most upside of any player in the league.

6 assists per game (and 5+ turnovers, as a point guard) makes her literally the best player in the league??--which I will point out, again, was the original assertion.

Quote:

Uh, did you watch Game 1 of the 1992 Finals?

Jordan shot 32.7% for his career from 3, versus Clark's current 33%. And she shoots with a smaller ball.

Wilson, who actually is the best player in the league as far as I can tell, is shooting 41+% from 3, and she's a freaking center.
