I will remain skeptical of the Qatari's.

I hadn't ever made the connection as to their benefit from the 'Ukraine' war.

There are reports that Qatar has been trying to get rid of that airplane since 2020 but couldn't find anyone stupid enough to take it off their hands.

It's a white elephant.

I admit that if you are using someone else's money to pay for it, then they are the suckers.

I don't think much of my tax money has been spent on the resolute desk.
There were a number of modifications made to it in the years after it was received.

So, there was tax money spent on it.

BTW, you can buy a replica of it from the White House Gift Shop...$110K.

The original one is probably priceless, though.

Most of the modifications happened before I was born.

Also, modifications on a desk aren't usually as expensive as modifications on a 747, but of course you know that.

There is actually a lot of interesting stuff out there about the desk. It was in a side room in disuse until Jackie Kennedy brought it back.

My post was not dumb unless it was blatantly false (i.e., not only false, but completely unbelievable). Please provide evidence that it was unbelievably false.

Until then, from https://www.newsweek.com/qatar-gift-trump-unsold-plane-2072564 we have:
Quote:

The Boeing 747-8 being offered to U.S. President Donald Trump by Qatar once served the Qatari royal family and has been sitting unsold for years.

The jet, a lavishly configured version of Boeing's largest passenger aircraft, has been lingering without a buyer since being put up for sale in 2020, according to aircraft listings and aviation analysts.

Yeah I think I posted a dozen or so pages back that it's been for sale since at least around 2020, and in reality it's a tiny market as to a buyer of a bespoke/white elephant 747 VIP jet that probably costs at least $8-10 million a year to maintain in a flyable status. It might be more than that even though as I really am not sure of the maintenance costs on GEnX engines, inspections, fluid changes etc.

Just documenting and figuring out the status takes a while, which I think is why it was flown to San Antonio for inspections this month.

This whole kerfluffle is just another epic fail by team Democrats.

Just curious does Trump still have his private jet that he used as his campaign plane what is it and how old is it ?

What are Quataris using since they phased out this 747 ?

I mean really, how stupid is DJT by even considering taking this airplane, following all laws, procedures, reporting and carefully considering the pros and cons?!?

What he should do is order a $1 trillion economic assistance package to get the airline industries of Haiti and Scranton, PA off the ground so that in 150 years and $50 trillion later we can show just how advanced the Wright Brothers were with their flying machines.

No one really knows. None of this information is available on the interwebs. Word has it all this info is stored in the boxes rotting away in a M-A-L bathroom.

Special prosecutor like Comey should be brought in to independently investigate.

But in all seriousness, I imagine the Qataris favor the smaller airbuses they have for their regional travels and the other 747 they have for longer flights.

Frankly, one should question why we are again building a redundant airplane vs a smaller option to use in emergency replacement scenarios.

One could question is adding a 3rd to the fleet is wise in that regards, but instead the discussion centers on Trump being bought by the Qataris.

It was only out of the Oval office from 1948-1961 fwiw. It was moved due to renovations between 1948-1952 and then Eisenhower had it put in a room where he used it for radio and TV broadcasts until Jackie found it and had it moved back...

But, the point it, we've already accepted we'll spend money to make modifications. Now we're just haggling over the price.

The 757 has about half the range of the 747 so it's not suitable for overseas. A bit surprised he is not using it domestically.

Went through pretty extensive refurb a few years ago. Also believe it was upgraded to have more advanced navigation systems making reliance on our ancient ATC not as relevant.

Did not see a 380 listed but I believe a few of the royals and or Emirati have a nicely kitted out 380.

The 757 has a range around 4000 nm. It's used as a transcontinental aircraft all the time...

Transcontinental would be the definition of not overseers.

Before one of our resident aviation experts chimes in, I understand a 757 can transverse the oceans.

But I think AF1 has requirements regarding excess fuel, weights, persons, cargo that would render the 757 not practical for trips abroad for POTUS.

The C-32 is the government transport version of the 757. Used all the time for overseas trips by the VP, Secretary of State, etc. Also has a full suite of comms gear to support connectivity very similar to what the VC-25s have. Trump's personal 757 is not suitable for him to use as a sitting POTUS for a variety of reasons.

I was not recommending that Trumps campaign plane would be suitable for any official US capacity

To me the hustle / grift is Qatar give the DOD the plane of course it is not suitable as Air Force 1 the DOD gives it to the Trump foundation and seeing as the Trump Presidential center is quite a ways off. DJT has a new plane for his post presidency but maybe I am missing something

You are missing the fact that it's not going to be used by Trump or his library as it is a gift to the United States.

I doubt his library foundation wants the upkeep and operating costs of a fully loaded trucked out 747-8.

It's those same costs that is leading Qatar to give it away.

You are missing the fact Jonathan Karl reported that "sources told" him the Trump Library would be getting the plane from the DoD after Trump's term ends. Surely you understand anything Karl claims from unnamed sources is absolute, indisputable fact.
