Just returned from Center Point. I arrived last Tuesday and spent 5 days coordinating medical care/first aid for first responders and volunteers. I don't know if it made the news but the Center Point Volunteer Fire Department was completely flooded. Within 2 days of the flooding volunteers had completely restored the building to a usable space. The devastation to riverside property is unimaginable. The outpouring of support from volunteers cannot be overstated. By Friday we had approximately 3000 people working. All of them had the supplies they needed because of donations. EMS staged an ambulance in Center Point. A mass casualty bus with ICU capability was sent. Law enforcement did a phenomenal job of traffic management. When I was leaving I told the fire chief I had never seen a response like this. He said "It's easy. We love each other "
Don't believe the news when they tell you that they don't need any more volunteers or help. My wife and I just showed up and found ways you help. Show up. Donate. They will be needing all of us for months.

Really, it also has to do with renovations... any structure in the flood zone cannot be renovated up to 50% of its value without being brought out of floodplain, so the owners can't even renovate the 50 year old cabins without raising the finish floor elevation. It would have been required to have flood tiedowns of soleplate to structural as part of a renovation... I would feel that is a major reason for trying to remove the flood zone designation.

Also because they likely could not renovate them without bringing the FFE up to above floodplain... however even if they were raised 20 ft above the ground they would have still been flooded in this scenario

Not sure if this is paywalled or not, but this is the firsthand account of one family. The locations sounds close to Camp Mystic near Hunt.

edit - I should probably add some context. This is a very gripping first-person account who was with his extended family in a cabin when it started floating down the river. It documents heroic bravery and survival, but it also details the death of a small child.

The author of this first-hand account just won a Pulitzer Prize for it.

Still praying every day for Cecilia Steward.

May God help us find her. God is always good and is looking out for our Angels.
