Well the elimination of that tax credit resulted in a huge drop off in sales. But used EV sales are booming.

Quote:

The US electric vehicle is market has split into two diverging realities. New EV sales cratered 28% year-over-year in Q1 2026 to just 212,600 units, according to new data from Cox Automotive - but used EV sales surged 12% to 93,500 units, with prices now within $1,300 of equivalent gas cars.

The data, presented in Cox Automotive's Q1 2026 Industry Insights call on March 25, reveals the clearest picture yet of how the federal tax credit's expiration is reshaping the EV market - and creating what may be the best buying opportunity in the history of electric vehicles.

The numbers don't lie. New EV sales have fallen off a cliff.

Quote:

The numbers are stark. Americans purchased just 212,600 new EVs in the first quarter, down from 296,304 in Q1 2025 - a 28% decline. EV market share fell to an estimated 5.8% of total new vehicle sales, matching Q4 2025's share and well below the 7.5% peak reached in Q3 2025.

I don't think so
The removal of the EV credit will help Tesla in the long run, because it pretty much makes it harder for others to compete against what is so far a great and mature product. Its why Honda simply dropped out of that market.

With also a lot of used EVs, and prices dropping, that's bad news for ICE manufacturers too. People will now be able to pay a couple of 1000 more and get an EV/Hybrid instead of ICE. The percentage of EV / Hybrid consumers that go back to ICE has got to be minimal/ negligible.

The cost of a used EV would have to plummet to an extreme degree before I would consider buying one. There's way to much risk with the quality of the batteries and how they were maintained by the prior owner.

Lots of used EV's are coming off of lease this year. They are only going to drop more in price.

Not a prediction but just wondering if Tesla and Toyota will eventually be the only serious players in the EV/Hybrid market. Maybe by 2030.

Been saying it from the beginning about hybrids, and the Google machine seems to agree:

Quote:

In early 2026, U.S. hybrid vehicle sales are surging to record highs, continuing a strong upward trend from 2025, while battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales have experienced a slowdown or slight decline, largely due to expiring tax credits. Consumers are increasingly favoring hybrids for their affordability and fuel efficiency over fully electric options.

Rivian headlights are hideous. Worst thing since the Edsel grill. They are crazy fast though. If they fixed those awful headlights they'd be appealing as street trucks that could smoke most cars in a drag race.

A 4 year old EV is only halfway through its 8 year battery warranty.

The first solid state batteries are entering production in late 2026, so very soon there won't be much reason to buy a gas engine car. 600+ mile range, 0-80% charge in 8 minutes, and the ultra fast and smooth acceleration that EVs are known for delivering = why would you buy anything but an EV? Well, unless you're a lolpoor I guess.

Hybrids are fantastic. The wife has a CRV hybrid and it can get us from Dallas to Houston to visit family on the weekend and back on a single tank of gas and still drive to work on Monday.

8 minutes? Eff, that's fast.

If you can get that speed at a charging station you'll see people who live in apartments start buying them.
