Because soccer isn't a 1 player sport. Furthermore Messi doesn't get to play in the Euros which is the only thing Portugal won (largely by tying their way to victory with a strong defense). Regardless, Messi has scored the most goals in a season (73), Ronaldo barely even cracks the top ten. In 150 more appearances, Ronaldo only has 40 more goals than Messi (well below both players score rates). Furthermore, Messi has almost 50 more assists than Ronaldo (again in 150 fewer games played).
Ronaldo is clearly the 2nd best player of all time. He is in the discussion for best player of all-time, but Messi has been a more dominant player throughout his career (in all phases except for headers) than Ronaldo. It really is as simple as that.
Looking forward to seeing Uruguay beat Portugal today as well.

Ronaldo had like 2 goals for half a season. Messi had a more impressive season carrying a much weaker team to the La Liga title and Copa Del Ray. Still Salah deserves the baloney d'or this year.
Also Balon d'or trophies are a stupid metric to pick a GOAT. It's a purely subjective trophy presented by a European organization. Objectively messi has better statistics and impacts the game more thoroughly (i.e. not just a goal scorer) than Ronaldo. And has in almost every year. Ronaldo definitely has had some seasons better than Messi, but on the aggregate messi is the GOAT.
Good thing balon d'or is calendar year then.

Messi got a pretty easy ride from the academy playing with xavi and iniesta, the anchor midfielders of spain's golden generation who carried them to euro and WC glory. Ronaldo's has a revolving door of guys who haven't had the chemistry that comes from playing their entire career together. The distance isn't as great at an individual level as implied. The national team brings him back down to earth and we'll see how he measures up with their passage.

You realize Copa America's an actual thing, right? Still ZERO titles for national team in weaker comps. He's not even considered the best in his own country by many because Maradona actually won for his country. And two assists... A shot that would've been stopped had a reaction tip not happened and a pointless goal in stoppage time. Yippee!
