As some of you know I used to actively write on the Crawfishboxes. Since I had a kid, the writings have dropped dramatically on that site. Winning the World Series had me nostalgic about it so I went back and looked at some of my first posts there.

Thought this one was interesting to re-read. I feel like the Crane era has done all 3 things I mentioned here, although I'm not sure if they hired anyone from Dayton or not... It seems like they do very similar things to Dayton

And this one (check out who wrote the first comment at the bottom)

It's fun reading those comments and remembering some of those prospect names I had long since forgotten.

From one of the comments, here's what he projected as our lineup for 2015:

1B: Singleton
2B: Altuve
SS: Correa/Marwin/Villar
3B: Dominguez/Correa
OF: DeShields
OF: Springer
OF: Maxwell/Wates
DH: Carter
C: Castro

SP: Norris, Keuchel, Clemens, Harrell

1) I'm glad our lineup and rotation was much better this year. 2) It's kinda cool to see the spots that our FO realized needed addressed through free agency

We pretty much lose nobody of significance via free agency this year.

Probably pick up a couple bullpen arms and maybe a DH? Other than that I imagine we bring up some young guys next year to fill in the lineup.

GM Jeff Luhnow smirked when asked if the Astros will repeat as champions. Said team likely will move extra starters into bullpen.

I hope we don't piss off Jose; dude is going to make 6 million this year, and 6.5 million next year. I know it's the contract; but I hope it doesn't creating any hard feelings.

Is Jose willing to negotiate a long-term deal right now? If he wants to test free agency, then he has to be okay with his current contract. It's not like the Astros are going to pay him more without getting years in return.

"Here Jos. You've outperformed your current contract, so we're tripling your salary the next two years." - fired GM

Great point, I'm basing it on the assumption he would be.

it certainly helps the Astros keep the team together if Altuve plays for only $6 MM in 2018 and $6.6 MM in 2019.

after the 2019 season; Verlander and McCann will be off the books. And only 1 year left for Reddick and Yuli
TREX01
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yuli has a decreasing contract as well. He make 12 then 10 then 8 so we will continue to free up some coin on that end

McCullers should move to the pen. He hasn't shown he can stay healthy all year long and it may Help preserve him. Plus, it would allow him to just focus on his two pitches and not have to worry about going more than 2x through the order with only two pitches.

He still hasn't had a single season with more than 125 IP. He was fantastic out of the bullpen this postseason. There have been rumors the Astros are mulling the same. I don't know why this is so controversial. With as much as he throws the curve ball t might extend his career.

Looking at next year's schedule, some interesting quirks..

-Will be done with the Rangers on July 29. Done with Oakland on August 29

-27 games in September...only 8 against the AL West. End the season with another 4 game road AL East series..this time in Baltimore. Overall, it's a 7 game road trip that starts in Toronto.

-Return to Dodger Stadium August 3-5...can hear the boos already.

-Between July 15 and August 9...only 3 home games (includes the All Star Break)

-Between June 18 and the All Star Break - 20 of 26 at home

-15 road games in August...all 15 in the Pacific Time Zone...ugh. In fact, from the All Star Break until September 6, we play 20 Pacific road games, 2 Mountain, 0 Central and East. Going to be a lot of late summer late nights.

Zero west coast road games in September though.

I think Lance will ultimately wind up as a reliever, but I don't force him there yet. I carry guys like Peacock and Musgrove that can bounce back and forth between the pen and rotation as needed.

With that said, I'm not privy to his medical charts, so I'll let the organization decide where he should be.

How about Ichiro as a veteran pinch hitter to replace Beltan? He will be cheap and had 28 pinch hits this year?

Debating whether or not to go to Opening Day in Arlington. Any idea on when ticket sales start?

I know this is an off-season moves thread, just wanted to ask

I am excited for the 2 game series in Denver! We have just moved here and a lock of Astros coverage on normal tv is going to be brutal!

I have been going to a few Ag football road games each year. I think I may change that to try and go to as many stadiums and see the Astros next year.

Not sure when, but contact AccidentProne about tickets. He works for the Rangers and can get discounted tickets.

I think we're going to make the trip. Verlander vs. Hamels. Seeing and hearing them have to promote the game as being against "The Defending World Champions." Bring it.

Morton, McHugh, and Peacock seem like possible trade pieces to get bullpen help. We have an abundance of #3 and #4 starters. Morton and Peacock's trade value will be especially high right now. Do you expect them to be able to repeat their success? I wouldn't be surprised to see one of them traded.

Out of that group, I really only would want to trade McHugh. Peacock brings a lot of value with his ability to be effective from the pen and as a starter. And Morton's upside is unreal for his small $7 mil salary.
That's certainly true, but it also depends on what you can get in return. If you can get a top line closer, it could be worth losing Morton.

Outside of landing deGrom or somebody of that caliber, NO WAY I let go of Charlie. He pitched his way into Astros HOF as far as I'm concerned. I want him on my team. The more I think about it.....I just want him on my team.

He is by far the best option in the FA market. I wouldn't be opposed to trading for Briton still. Or Both. Both would be fun. Turn a weakness into a strength really fast.

4. Astros get the bullpen help they needed in the postseason
There is no magic formula in baseball. What worked and helped the Astros win the World Series in 2017 won't necessarily get them another title in 2018. Their core is young and they're poised to contend for a long time. There's no doubt about that. But trying to get through the postseason with a bullpen in which your most reliable relievers are starters again doesn't seem like a smart move.

General manager Jeff Luhnow knows that, and I expect him to address his bullpen in a big way this winter. I not only think the Astros will sign Wade Davis, the best available free agent reliever, I think he's going to splurge for a second top bullpen arm as well. Jake McGee or Mike Minor make the most sense given the team's need for a lefty. Even in this age of #bullpening, the Astros showed you don't need a dominant bullpen to win the World Series. You just need to be really great at everything else. I anticipate Luhnow building a great bullpen to go with that great everything else this offseason.

Doubt that Britton will be traded this offseason. Seems like O's management wanted to hold on to him at the trade deadline, and I'd imagine things haven't changed. He'll probably be moved at the trade deadline, unless the O's are in a position to make a push

With the way Angelos behaved at the deadline, I would suspect we will not be doing any deals with the Orioles in the near future.

I'm not mad at em.

Britton had season ending knee (IIRC) surgery not long after the deadline.

That busted trade was a blessing in disguise.

Carlos Correa will be on Jimmy Kimmel tonight;

A.J. Hinch finalist for AL MOY (along with Terry Francona(CLE) & Paul Molitor(MIN)) (announced Nov.14)
Jose Altuve finalist for AL MVP (along with Aaron Judge(NYY) & Jose Ramirez(CLE)) (announced Nov.16)

As cool as it would be for AJ to win, no one will even come close to Molitor. That team blew expectations out of the water
