- Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country was better than First Contact
- Every single one the Heisei-era Godzilla movies released in the 90s was better than that Matthew Broderick garbage.
- Alien 3 was a big letdown, but still better than half the movies on this list.

Other notable snubs:
- Strange Days
- Mimic
- Gattica
- Dark City
- The Thirteenth Floor

It is a real testament to the dedication that TexAgs users to check in on the Entertaiment Board rather than start doing their actual jobs that between 9:00 and 9:03 a.m. the number of votes doubled.

I don't get the crazy praise for that movie.

It's great, don't get me wrong. But how/why is it better than every other movie from the 90's?

2 incredible lead actors: Tim Robbins in the prime of his career at age 36 and Morgan Freeman really coming into the limelight that he has stayed in for the last 25 years at age 57, one from the West Coast, one from the South, acting together like they've known each other their whole lives.

multiple fantastic supporting actors: Clancy Brown, Bob Gunton as the warden, William Sadler, Gil Bellows, James Whitmore.

story by Stephen King, who one again proves that he is one helluva writer even if there aren't killer clowns and haunted hotels.

Close to zero chicks in the movie to weigh it down with whiny side storylines.

Bogs: one of the scariest movie villains you'll ever see; and the absolutely sheet-kicking he takes from Clancy Brown.

A message that life can be beautiful even under the worst of circumstances: Like when Andy gets the beers for his friends on the roof, and when he locks the door and plays the opera music even know he understands it means severe punishment.

A painfully real truth for many people about what confinement does to you: Brooks can't handle the lack of a routine outside of prison and kills himself. Red is so freaked out by everything that he constantly asks his boss if he can use the bathroom at work.

Maybe the greatest escape plan scene ever.

The warden hearing those sirens coming, looking at his own pretentious Bible quote on the wall, and getting his pistol out.

Red's speech to the parole board when he finally earns his freedom, a fantastic look at the true objectives of the prison system:

Red: Rehabilitated? Well, now let me see. You know, I don't have any idea what that means.
1967 Parole Hearings Man: Well, it means that you're ready to rejoin society
Red: I know what you think it means, sonny. To me, it's just a made up word. A politician's word, so young fellas like yourself can wear a suit and a tie, and have a job. What do you really want to know? Am I sorry for what I did?
1967 Parole Hearings Man: Well, are you?
Red: There's not a day goes by I don't feel regret. Not because I'm in here, because you think I should. I look back on the way I was then: a young, stupid kid who committed that terrible crime. I want to talk to him. I want to try to talk some sense to him, tell him the way things are. But I can't. That kid's long gone, and this old man is all that's left. I got to live with that. Rehabilitated? It's just a bull**** word. So you go on and stamp your form, sonny, and stop wasting my time. Because to tell you the truth, I don't give a *****

The last scene on the beach, which wasn't even a part of the original cut, they added it in after the test audience saw it. No dialogue, just two very good very old friends reuniting. Because hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.

Best battle so far is between Contact and Demolition Man, two movies made for slightly different audiences.

It's not just the 90's, it's the number one movie of all time on IMDB. All freakin time. And all those who profess so much love for it, it had a worldwide box of under 30 million. The only other historically praised movie I can think of that is similar was It's a wonderful life - but that had as much to do with post war cynicism and not wanting such an optimistic and (for the time) Sci Fi movie. There is no logical explanation on a movie being a box office bomb (its budget was 25 million, it lost money) and then being praised as the greatest movie ever.
I liked it for sure, but have never understood the over the over the top love for it.

Shawshank was released September 22, 1994.
Nobody knew what the title meant

Movies already playing when it opened
  • Speed
  • The Lion King
  • Forrest Gump
  • True Lies
  • The Mask
  • Clear and Present Danger
  • Natural Born Killers

Pulp Fiction opened October 14 with the biggest buzz in years based on how I remember the crowd in College Station going to see it that first weekend.
Stargate opened the week after that. Then two of the most highly anticipated niche movies - Interview with the Vampire, then Star Trek Generations.

that will smith/kevin kline abomination should not be within 10 feet of this list. although, it did give us this greatness:

----------------------------------------------------------
America's destiny is not of our own choosing. We did not seek nor did we provoke an assault on our freedom and our way of life. We did not expect nor did we invite a confrontation with evil. Yet the true measure of a people's strength is how they rise to master that moment when it does arrive.

I appreciate your concerns. I used a pretty detailed algorithm over the past month to figure out where to seed movies that were a hybrid of two different genres and ones that had limited box office success but ended up as "cult classic" or popular beyond their years. It's a bit "tech-heavy" but if you'd like to look at the rationale I ended us using, it's detailed here.
