It's a long way from the finish line in the semifinals, but the equivalent of this has happened in the last 90 minutes or so of one of the matchups.

much as I like hotties... movies of the 00's would be very interesting.

Some real depth because of the breadth of cult/indy and edgy films that really make it interesting.

Indy/cult films - some are drama and some action i suppose it just seemed like this decade had a lot of these kind of cultish movies break through to mainstream - the Pulp Fiction impact:

O' Brother Where Art Thou
No Country For Old Men - also best picture
Memento
Mulholland Dr.
The Wrestler
Inglorious Basterds
Kill Bill 1 and 2
21 Grams
Traffic
Lost in Translation
Sideways
Donnie Darko
American Psycho

The other drama movies *= academy award winners:

Gladiator*
The Departed*
Chicago*
Crash*
The Hurt Locker*
Million Dollar Baby*
A Beautiful Mind*
Slumdog Millionaire*
Gangs of New York
Walk The Line
Something's Gotta Give
Pride and Prejudice
Erin Brokovich
Charlie Wilson's War
DreamGirls
The Passion of the Christ

Sci-Fi and Fantasy is all over the place some beloved and some despised and dominated by a few franchises:

LOTR 1-3
SW Ep. III RotS and II AotC
Pirates of the Caribbean 1-3
Serenity
Star Trek reboot and Star Trek: Nemesis
Harry Potter 1-6
T3 and Salvation
Matrix 2 and 3
Avatar
The Island
Signs

Comedies are few and far between but some classics and really odd ones:

The Hangover
Little Miss Sunshine
Tropic Thunder
Wedding Crashers
Dodgeball
Idiocracy
Meet The Parents
Step Brothers
Superbad
Elf
Old School
Balls of Fury
Blades of Glory
Borat
Team America
Knocked Up
40 Year Old Virgin
Talladega Nights
Austin Powers: Goldmember
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy

Fair number of action but movies but not a lot of great ones imho:

The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons
Sherlock Holmes
Bourne 1-3
3:10 to Yuma
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Taken
Bond: Die Another Day, Casino Royal and Quantum of Solace
Oceans 11-13
The Dark Knight
Iron Man
The Incredible Hulk
Flags of Our Fathers
Mystic River
Live Free or Die Hard
World Trade Center
Valkyrie
The Patriot
We Were Soldiers
Master and Commander

Overall less depth but would be interesting - I think the indy/cult films would dominate early rounds.

If I had to predict a final four:
Action: The Dark Knight
Drama: Gladiator - but No Country For Old Men is the dark horse
Comedy: The Hangover - although Dodgeball could surprise or Idiocracy (based on how Office Space did).
Sci-Fi/Fantasy: LOTR III

I think Office Space is doing so well because this board is littered with mid to late 90's grads who suddenly found themselves actually in Office Space. It's incredibly relatable for our age bracket.

Went to a taping of a Friends episode in the early 2000s and this was exactly what I thought when I saw Courtney Cox. She was striking in person....I stared at her rather than Jennifer.

To further prove my point of not being a comedy movie person, out of all the comedies you listed, I have seen 3! On the other hand, I have seen all of the action, fantasy, and drama movies you listed except for two, the two Davinci Codes.

Doing the 2000s movies gives me the chance to make all three LOTR movies 16th seeds and have Brian throw his computer monitor out the window, so that's a real point in its favor.

You can put them at 32, they'll still win that matchup.

Oh, and make sure to leave off any movie with an actor who's said anything remotely offensive.

True Lies 7.2
Tombstone 7.8

it's not an anomaly of texags.

Sorry, but if you had told me Tombstone was made in the late 80's or 2000's, I'd have believed it. True Lies is the epitome of 90's action movies - you've got the two greatest Arnolds of the 90's (Schwarzenegger and Tom), topless harrier jets, dance sequences with Tia Carrere... I'll stop here, this list could get long.

You can't tell me this isn't one of the most 90's movies of the 90's. It should have been in the final four.

Epitomizing the 90s doesn't make it the BEST movie of the 90's. It might make it the MOST 90's MOVIE of the 90s. But this is a Best movie of the 90s contest.

It also doesn't make it a better movie. It's a rather cheesy movie really. Which is totally 90's.

Sorry your movie lost.
If this were the most 90s movie contest we'd have a True Lies vs Face/Off final.

Just noticed: Has any actor ever had a better decade of comedy movies than Will Ferrel in the 2000s?

Of course there is Eddie Murphy with 5 big movies 48 Hours, Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop 1 and 2 and Coming to America in the 80s. Those 5 probably are bigger box office than these 10. But it's just a lot of iconic comedy movie roles and the only sequel is not his franchise. So 10 unique big comedy movies:

Zoolander
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
Old School
Elf
Anchorman
The Producers
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby
Blades of Glory
Semi-pro
Step Brothers

plus some kids movies and a romcom:
Bewitched
Land of the Lost
Curious George

and cameos:
Wedding Crashers - damn near a supporting role but it was uncredited
Boat Trip
Starsky and Hutch

those don't even include 10 other smaller roles, smaller films, less popular, etc. most are not featuring him or were attempts to go more dramatic:
The Ladies Man - Tim Meadows vehicle
Drowning Mona - Danny Devito flick
Melinda and Melinda - woody allen flick
Wake Up, Ron Burgundy - straight to video cash grab
Oh What a Lovely Tea Party - documentary
Winter Passing - small quirky Indy film
Kicking and Screaming with Robert Duvall
The Wendell Baker Story - a Wilson brothers vehicle
Stranger than Fiction
The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard

Alltogther that's 26 movies in the decade.

Well I'll argue with myself now just one post later - I guess Ben Stiller could give that a run in the 2000s also

Keeping the Faith
Meet the Parents
Zoolander
The Royal Tennenbaums
Along Came Polly
Starksy and Hutch
Dodgeball
Meet The ****ers
Madagascar 1 and 2
Night at the Museum 1 and 2
Tropic Thunder

cameo:
Anchorman

But I'll still take Will Ferrell.

Jim Carrey 94-04 has gotta be up there with Ferrell, right?

Dumb and Dumber
The Mask
Ace Ventura (And all that was just 1994!)
Batman Forever
Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls
The Cable Guy
Liar Liar
The Truman Show
Man on the Moon
Me, Myself & Irene
The Majestic
The Grinch
Bruce Almighty
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

yeah for a 10 year span I suppose - as opposed to a specific decade. not that it has to be limited to that. I was just noticing with the 00s talk the number of comedies Ferrell had.

Although 94-04 is 11 years as opposed to 00-09 which is 10.

So take off Eternal Sunshine (or the first 3 but you aren't taking those off).
