It would simply be unAmerican! Tommy Boy is a funny movie but overall it does not match The Sandlot in quality..

  • The Big Lebowski
  • Groundhog Day
  • Dumb and Dumber
  • Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
  • Dazed & Confused
  • There's Something About Mary
  • Office Space
  • Austin Powers
  • Clerks
  • Home Alone
  • Wayne's World
  • South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut
  • Friday
  • My Cousin Vinny
  • Happy Gilmore
  • The Sandlot
  • Tommy Boy

Of the movies above it, those are the only two I could see Tommy Boy deserving to be above. IMO.

That is a hell of a comedy list right there. I'm honestly curious to see an argument for how 00's comedy beats 90's.

Not to mention there are some absolute classics below Tommy Boy on that list.

The Birdcage may be the most underrated comedy movie of all time. Absolutely hilarious. I could watch it 100 times.

It's definitely a great list. No qualms about that. Still, I'd put Tommy Boy above these:

  • The Big Lebowski
  • Groundhog Day
  • Dumb and Dumber
  • Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
  • Dazed & Confused
  • There's Something About Mary
  • Office Space
  • Austin Powers
  • Clerks
  • Home Alone
  • Wayne's World
  • South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut
  • Friday
  • My Cousin Vinny
  • Happy Gilmore
  • The Sandlot

I loved Chris Farley on SNL but thought his movies were awful. It's easily in the bottom 2 or 3 of this bracket.

It's a great list, which, over a ten year period , it should be. But just off the top of my head, some of my all time favorites are from the following decade:

  • Old School
  • 40 Year Old Virgin
  • Superbad
  • Hangover
  • Anchorman
  • Step Brothers

I'd rank all of those above most of the 90s movies listed.

Second tier, also very good
  • Wedding Crashers
  • Bridesmaids
  • Napoleon Dynamite
  • Mean Girls
  • Dodgeball
  • Borat
  • Tropic Thunder
  • Zoolander

Pretty strong case in my opinion.

40 Year Old Virgin and Hangover are up there with the best of the 90s, but I wouldn't put any of the rest in the top 10 if they came out that decade.

I wouldn't put any of those above Lebowski or Groundhog Day, those are great movies that are also great comedies.

I'd put Superbad and Wedding Crashers at the top of this list. A lot of these are just 1-person vehicles that while very funny, are not on par with the best of the 90s. However, I always feel comedies and dramas particularly weigh more on you given your age at the time. I was 16 to 25 years old in the 1990s, a lot of the ones on the list were some of the first R rated movies I saw, it's hard to compete with your first taste of movies where swearing and violence and nudity are used for laughs.

Just curious. How does South Park get a higher seed than As Good As It Gets? Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt both got Oscars!

I mean it's not that funny for one thing. It's more of a drama with some funny stuff than a a comedy, no? Most comedies don't get Oscars for performances.

Anyway it wasn't winning this thing no matter what seed you give it.

Want to shout out a few of my favorite comedies growing up (which I understand were never going to make this list)...

Problem Child 2
Home Alone 2
The Mask
Blank Check
Mighty Ducks 1-2
Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls
Vegas Vacation
The Parent Trap

While I love The Big Lebowski, I don't think it will make it that far because it's not as universally appealing as many of the others on the list. Just about everyone at least sort of likes most of the movies on this list, but the Big Lebowski is more of a cult classic that about half of its viewers just didn't get.

I went with Mallrats & Rush Hour over the two Jim Carrey movies. When I was younger, I loved Jim Carrey, but he annoys the crap out of me now that I'm older. Maybe I just burned out on him or something. But I can watch Mallrats & Rush Hour over and over again.
