Although 94-04 is 11 years as opposed to 00-09 which is 10.

So take off Eternal Sunshine (or the first 3 but you aren't taking those off).
Crap, good point. Hate to lose Eternal Sunshine as it's so good.

I think his career's downward trajectory started right after that movie, actually. He still had some decent hits (Yes Man and a few others), but nothing like that 94-99 run.

Having been the perfect age at the time, I can tell you I worshipped at the altar of Carrey. Anything he put out, I'd go see.

IMDB

True Lies 7.2
Tombstone 7.8

it's not an anomaly of texags.

Sorry, but if you had told me Tombstone was made in the late 80's or 2000's, I'd have believed it. True Lies is the epitome of 90's action movies - you've got the two greatest Arnolds of the 90's (Schwarzenegger and Tom), topless harrier jets, dance sequences with Tia Carrere... I'll stop here, this list could get long.

You can't tell me this isn't one of the most 90's movies of the 90's. It should have been in the final four.

Epitomizing the 90s doesn't make it the BEST movie of the 90's. It might make it the MOST 90's MOVIE of the 90s. But this is a Best movie of the 90s contest.

It also doesn't make it a better movie. It's a rather cheesy movie really. Which is totally 90's.

Sorry your movie lost.
If this were the most 90s movie contest we'd have a True Lies vs Face/Off final.
Muckraker... is there anyway we can have the final four for this bracket and then a final four between the MOST 90's 90's movie as a consolation bracket?

I mean obviously we need:
True Lies
Face/Off
Bad Boys
Broken Arrow
The Dog Lord

I need you guys to point me in the right direction for what I do next, by casting a vote for the next contest.

  • Movies of 2000-2009
  • Best moments from Game of Thrones
  • Best moments from the Marvel films - or maybe all super hero movies dating back to the original Christopher Reeve Superman
  • Hottest Sci-fi/fantasy chicas - I was watching an episode of Firefly last night that heavily featured Inara (Morena Baccarin), and yeah, that idea has some merit - so we'd be talking all TV and movies dating back to whenever I started noticing the hotties on Buck Rodgers and the original Battlestar Galactica.

Vote for one here and I'll do them in order of votes received going forward through the summer of not quite that many people dying as I was told were going to die.

Another idea that mixes two of those you listed: best movie moments/scenes of the ___ decade.

It would be interesting to see how many moments from crappier movies would beat out those from better movies.

Semifinals update: One match is tied at 47-47 after 94 votes.

Voting will be capped around 8 a.m. tomorrow.

The 2000-2009 movie bracket is next with 37.5% of the vote
Then the sci-fi hotness (31.5%)
Then GoT / Marvel moments - not together, they just tied for votes.

The best movie moments of a decade sounds great, but I don't know enough about that many movies to do it justice, that would be more time consumed than i can do. I did it for Star Wars only and it took 5-1/2 weeks. I would be willing to do one solely for Big Trouble in Little China however.

I'll be very honest: Shawshank is good, but I've never understood the "OMG GREATEST MOVIE EVER!" praise. I was disappointed to see Silence of the Lambs lose to it previously since I think it had a shot at winning the whole thing.

I feel that about both Shawshank and Tombstone. Good movies, to be sure, but there is a huge amount of love for both that I just don't quite get, particularly on Tombstone. But that's the fun in these things, seeing where the compass points and conversing about why we like one or the other. There's no wrong answer here.

Agreed. Those that that talk down on Shawshank on here have not really offered their own version of "OMG GREATEDT MOVIE EVER". Probably because they are indecisive and don't have one.

I don't necessarily have a definitive #1, but Gladiator is one that comes to mind for both it's quality and rewatchability.

It really comes down to how you define greatest anyway. Tombstone falls into the category of being one of my favorites and an overall good movie with great moments, but it doesn't come close to being one of the "greatest."
Chipotlemonger

Yes just like I figured, indecisive. Don't hate on people choosing their favorite movie when you can't even decide on one for yourself.

Exactly! My mood changes day-by-day. As far as a well done, really all-together, perfect movie, from acting, cast selection, script, etc...Shawshank is near perfect. However, I realize that it is my opinion. If we were playing a game and someone that knows me well needed to write down what my favorite movie is, they would put Shawshank. It is my opinion. No knock on Tombstone being a great movie. Heck I voted it #1 in action movies during this voting. I was just very surprised that T beat S.

So, there you have it. Even though you were not asking me, I am going to answer that my OMG Greatest Movie Ever is Shawshank. However, it is way too difficult to pick a greatest movie across all genres which is why I enjoyed Muck's approach to this voting. I knew that the final four would be strange due to the difficulty of voting best between four different genres. For example, I will always pick any other genre over comedy for I am just not a comedy movie guy. There are others that might not get into Scify/Fantasy and would rather a Romance/Comedy. Whatever...it is all opinions and moods.

Shawshank is a really good movie, I'd put it in the top 10-15 of the 90s, but #1 on IMDB is a bit confusing. I guess its just one of the movies that just appeals to everyone. It doesn't have to be anyone's #1, but if it's in almost everyone's top 10, then the rankings are going to be very high.

Muck...when you going to do the 2000's bracket?

Just looking at Best Picture winners...

Gladiator
A Beautiful Mind
Chicago
LOTR ROTK
Million Dollar Baby
Crash - never saw it. Is it good?
The Deaparted
No Country for Old Men
Slumdog Millionaire - I have been to India many times, therefore, I absolutely love this movie!
The Hurt Locker - meh
The King's Speech - meh

It's one of the weaker best picture winners in my opinion. It was okay as a movie, had a great cast, but was definitely Oscar bait.

Also, starting in the 2000s, you are getting close to needing to separate a sub-category out of Fantasy...comics.

If you do a 2010's, how many of the top 16 in the fantasy category would have the word, "Marvel," in it's description?

+1 for being of the opinion that Crash is a pretty weak movie overall and a head scratcher for a Best Picture winner over Munich. I don't think I ever saw Chicago - how was that one?

I liked Crash and Chicago, though neither were best picture worthy. The problem is that in both years, the selections were weak.

Probably just a few. and Endgame will win the bracket anyways, so no need to flood it. Off the top of my head I wouldn't go past Endgame, Infinity War, GOTG and Winter Soldier. Maybe Black Panther so I dont' get boycotted and told how insensitive I am.

Chicago is a good movie. It is the movie that kind of started the more present style of "musical" movies, based on Broadway where there are high-profile actors in singing roles, rather than great singers in acting roles from long ago.

FYI. That's 11 movies..... a "decade" is usually considered from x0-x9 so 2000-09

Take off King's Speech from 2010

And several of those are weaker winners and not the best movie of that year imho.

2009 Inglorious Basterds over Hurt Locker (meh)
2008 Dark Knight over Slumdog Millionaire (but I like this movie a lot)
2005 Walk The Line over Crash (very meh)
2004 not a great year but I liked a few more than Million Dollar Baby (The Aviator, KBv2, Sideways, even Passion of the Christ)
2001 also liked several over A Beautiful Mind although it's very good (Mulholland Dr., Memento, LOTR I)

Chicago was deserving it was so well made and so well performed really. LOTR III, Departed, Gladiator, No Country were certainly deserving all very good.
