As far as known bands?

Skinny Puppy
Meshuggah
Ministry (actually, would be surprised if no one here has been to one of their show)
Melvins

Wife and I saw Meshuggah and Ministry on the same bill. I think Hemlock (a sludge band from Vegas ) opened

Now that would haven been a great night. I figured no one here would have probably seen them (Meshuggah) and Skinny Puppy (which probably does hold true).

meshuggah is one of the few active bands on my top tier of favorites that i've not seen live sadly. i did however see ministry with the melvins and coc, front row balcony.. had those tickets for years, literally. bought them the day they went on sale and then it got rescheduled multiple times around covid. that was my second time seeing the melvins- got to see them with napalm death and melt banana a few years back also. that was a lot of fun too.

Got to consider that nearly every band was once an opener.

I saw meshuggah open for Tool on their '02 tour.

In a wierd tie in, ministry, mentioned above, now has a member that was once a member of Tool; Paul D'Amour.

Lol has anyone else seen the Spin Doctors live like I have?
my first concert, woodlands pavillion, 1993, with soul asylum and screaming trees.

One of the folks from the scene i keep in contact with is playing with will to live now and they have 5 tx dates with madball coming up.
damn that's awesome. How cool that Rob has kept that band alive for 25 years now.

He called me totally out the blue about a year or two ago, hadn't heard from him in over a decade. He sent me some demos they were working on, quick conversation but good to hear from him. He told me Scott had passed away

Yea man it is terrible about Scott. I used to go to the big easy ALL THE TIME when he was bartending and hang out and watch blues and zydeco and the like. 2 other guys that were pretty big in the Texas scene died back in 2020 and both were good friends of mine, Riley gale and wade Allison, but idk if you ever heard of Iron age or power trip, but both had a pretty damn good following. Dudes from obituary did a cover of power trip after Riley passed. Pretty wild.

Completely agree that it is wild that will to live is still playing. I remember when jamey jasta wore their shirt on headbands ball. Besides pride kills, idk if I ever saw another Texas band more. Of im not at work you bet your ass i will be at the houston show and might just have to dust off my hard-core dancing skills.

Just led me down a mental rabbit hole which reminded me that I saw Meat Loaf in Sydney. Meat really has no ability to sing by that time in his career. Probably 10 years ago.

And that reminds me about the fact that I saw Lil Wayne with Birdman open for Eminem in Sydney. The first act was Hilltop Hood Hoods but unfortunately, we got there later than I wanted to and we had to go to the opposite side of the stadium to get in. So I could hear them playing but couldn't see the show.

I saw Eminem on a side stage at warped tour. Those first couple warped tours probably would qualify as seeing a ton of bands before they got huge. Those were loaded with good bands.

I too saw Eminem at Warped Tour. This was the summer of 1999 when he had just released The Slim Shady LP a couple of months before. "My Name Is" was blowing up on MTV, and I remember we were all stoked to see Dr. Dre come out and instead, there was some rando and it pissed everybody off, haha.

If you were there, you also saw the 1999 versions of:

Ice T
Blink 182 (touring on Enema of the State, which had literally come out like a week before)
The Black Eyed Peas (before Fergie)
Less Than Jake (touring Hello Rockview and "History of a Boring Town" and "All My Friends Are Metalheads")
Dropkick Murphys (like 6 years before "I'm Shipping Pp to Boston" came out)
Jimmy Eat World (touring Clarity)

And a ton of others. Those shows were pretty epic.

Completely agree. 1998 and 1999 warped tours definitely shaped my musical tastes and really got me in to wanting to be around the local punk scene. It wasn't until a few years later that I really got in to the local stuff where I made some of the best friends of my life.

Leon "Pappy" Selph and the Light Crust Doughboys. My dad hired them a couple of times to play at the annual Labor Day party at our ranch back in the late 70's.

Lenny Kravitz with opening act, Cheryl Crow - both at height of their fame. My company hired them to play.

Earth Wind and Fire - also hired by my company

Anybody seen the B-52s live? That was a fun show!

I'll add one that may be a bit under the radar, System of a Down.

As big as they are, they only played about 10 shows in Texas after the club days. And none since 2006.

I saw them at numbers open for fear factory in 90s, and again at woodlands in 2006, their last show in Texas.

Maybe a thread of 'who have you seen at a club/before they were big' might be good one.

I saw them at austin music hall in '05.

Scott Douglas. He was in a bunch of houstkn hardcore bands. I'm not sure when all he worked there but I would hang out there from maybe 2002-2007. Would have been wearing one of these hats most of the time.

Saw Paul Anka in about 1987 in New Jersey.

Saw 311 at a small unaircondiitioned community hall in Charleston, SC in 1996. They had just blown up on the airwaves. I am sure y'all have seen them at some or other music fest.

To the earlier post, I saw Gary Allan at least twice in college Station in the early 00s. At least once at Harry's.

Has anyone heard of The Casualties? I went to high school with their lead guitarist.

Scott on the right.

My teenage baby face in the back left, next to my same aged friend from high school who was in a metal band called Deep.

The other 3 in front were about 5-6+ years older than us if my memory serves.

Def. know power trip man! Swing of the Axe got a lot of play on liquid metal, and they got a grammy nom!

Jamey wearing that shirt in a music video I remember, not sure if I knew he wore it while hosting the show... if so that's awesome!

Got some decent rep from famous musicians now and again

Saw Elvis in Shreveport in 1976. Elvis died in 1977.

Women of all ages were standing on their chairs, rushing the stage and going crazy. It's was completely insane.

That dude was so much shorter than I anticipated haha.

Man Scott and rob look like children in that photo. Eric Gibson is married to my ex gf. Not sure if you knew Eric or not, but I found that pretty funny.

Power trip is so good. Riley was such an awesome dude.

Been trying to think of some bands that might fit this thread.

Arson Anthem at the Rail Club in Ft. Worth around 2011. One of Phil Anselmo's side projects. They didn't tour much. Hank III was the drummer.

This guy is frustrating as hell. I'll get an email from him and I'll think "finally a new album??" Nope, he's always just announcing that he's doing a random show on a sailboat halfway across the world.

I want to hear about how you fell in love with the girl at the rock show.

Also mxpx played and those are pretty much straight up lyrics to one of their songs. Also, I saw them play an acoustic set at Soundwaves in houston in like 2002.

MxPx was my first concert. Wore flip flops because I didn't know better and lost them in the "mosh pit".

No great claims to fame for me... Saw The Killers at Gypsy Tea Room in 2004. They played a 45 minute set because that's all they had.

311 at The Stanley Hotel on Halloween with everyone dressed up which was pretty unforgettable.

Told Johnny Lee at Chilifest 2000 that I didn't care who he was, he wasn't getting into VIP Parking before being informed who he was and that he'd shortly be taking the stage.

In 1992, I saw The Dixie Chicks with a brunette singer and guitarist Robin Lynn Macy before they brought in Natalie Maines. ("Am I on AM radio? Love you!")
They opened up with Dionne Warwick in Plano, I believe?
I saw the Dixie Chicks about the same time. I moved to Texas in 1991 and they sang at the open house event for GTE employees when GTE World Headquarters opened at Hidden Ridge in Las Colinas. They parked in the parking garage and were taking their hair out of rollers as we parked and walked to the building. I had never heard of them and didn't know who it was until we heard them play later.

I feel like unless you've seen a band/artist that hasn't been around for 50+ years, then you aren't alone on this forum. No 'famous' artist of the last 30-40 years has gone unseen by most people in their 50s/60s.

Let's get the real winners here. Who saw the Beatles? Buddy holly? Hank? Otis Redding? The doors with Morrison? Hendrix? Joplin? Mammas and papas?

Lots of 'I saw this band before they were famous' responses (I'm guilty too) but I feel like that's another thread.

Harry Chapin is one of the few artists that I routinely hear his music and wish I could have seen him live. "Greatest Stories Live" was a mainstay in our casette player on the 7 hour trip to the beach every vacation, and it began my appreciation for great musical storytellers.
