I've still yet to see any confirmation or even credible rumors/sourcing. What makes you say that?

Absolutely nobody has come out and denied it. Maybe they're all under NDAs and afraid of being sued, but if it Page wasn't Achilles, I think somebody (production team, actor, extra, anybody) would have leaked a denial by now. So while it's not a certainty, I'd be moderately surprised if achilles wasn't page at this point.

If true, it's the worst casting choice ever. A 5'1, 100 pound trans dude - literally somebody that 98% of random men on the street could whale (I'm assuming the remaining 2% are in wheelchairs or have flipper arms or something) - is playing a legendary warrior that mowed through opposing soldiers like grass.

Nolan and his team never comment on this kind of stuff. Like, ever. He simply doesn't give a **** / doesn't dip his toe in culture war issues. Further, this kind of outrage is limited to Twitter crazies/Elon Musk and won't affect the box office in the least. Not for a Christopher Nolan summer blockbuster starring everyone and their dog. Not unless Fox News or whoever starts hemming and hawing, but considering there's no valid sourcing on the rumor, I would be surprised if even they did.

Secondly, literally the exact same thing can be said in the opposite direction. If this rumor were TRUE, someone - some source, insider, reporter, journalist, podcaster, etc - almost assuredly would have confirmed as much by now. Instead? There's been absolutely nothing. No hint or followup of any kind. Again, this is a rumor that started on a random Twitter account, that was then fanned to the extreme by anti-woke outrage, and nothing more (so far).

Could it end up being true?

Sure, it's possible.

But as of now there is ZERO tangible evidence to suggest as much.

I'm going with Claude!s take that she's playing a diminished Achilles in Hell. There is no other way to justify this.

But, then as someone else pointed out, its then a backhanded insult to the trans community if that's the direction he took because he's saying that Page can't represent Achilles as originally depicted because to do so would betray common sense and logic.

If somehow Page ends being Achilles while mortal, then this will be the worst casting decision of all time. I just can't believe he did that.

There are MULTIPLE other ways to justify this.

Good Lord.

Simply by Page playing another (zombie) character, which is the most likely explanation.

In fact, here's a pretty convincing report, with photographic evidence, of who Page may very well be playing, and it ain't Achilles (slight potential spoiler warning for those wanting to remain completely spoiler free)...

And even if this doesn't turn out to be true, it's just as "credible" as the Achilles rumor at this point. It's just that this one doesn't stoke anit-woke outrage or get clicks, thus no one's going to run with it.

Well this is concerning.
If Page isn't Achilles, I'm not sure that the 3 people repeatedly posting unflattering pictures of Lupita N'yongo to prove she's too ugly to play Helen of Troy can carry the hate of this thread all the way to the movie's release date.

You're correct that there's no tangible evidence. But the rumor mill is going hard and nobody - not an extra, not a random passerby peaking over the lot fence, not Nolan's wife's cousin's adopted son - is denying it. if Vegas took bets, you wouldn't bet 1:1 and neither would I. These sorts of rumors are far from infallible, but they're probably right 75% of the time or more.

Claim that it wouldn't affect box office is based on nothing. I'm probably center right on social issues (fine with gay marriage for example), but casting a 5'1, 100 pound girl as achilles would make me vindictively skip it while flipping Nolan the bird. And I'm far from the extreme; there are probably 100 million people to the right of me on social issues in the USA. So if I won't watch it, it means a lot of other people won't either. He'll still make money, but it will cost him hundreds of millions at the box office.

I mean justifying her playing Achilles. If Page is playing some other character, then I likely don't care.

I was saying there is no way to justify Page playing Achilles unless its as some diminished form of him in hell like Claude! and others have postulated.

If Page is playing some other character that is not Achilles, then I likely don't care at that point.

Except that's not what's happening here.

I'm not "white knighting" for the movie. I've been critical of both trailers, and literally just said I'd probably prefer a Robert Eggers adaptation of the material over a Nolan one.

I could not care less if you don't want to see this movie.

What I *am* doing is attempting to combat the incessant whining and outrage over multiple culture-war RUMORS that likely aren't true. If, year after year after year, I have to listen to right-leaning folks preemptively complain about "woke" movies they haven't seen yet - that often never end up being as woke as they *****ed about for months - I'm going to make their experience doing so as miserable as they often make the experience for me. Which involves challenging them every chance I get, when they post unsubstantiated nonsense.

If that rubs you the wrong way, I don't know what to tell you.
Cliff.Booth
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The difference there being, no one is trying to make anything miserable for you. It takes a certain pathology to think a lot of things are directed at oneself when they are not. Dudes venting about stuff they don't like in shows or movies has zero to do with you. If you were to catch another month long ban, this place would churn on as usual with people shooting the **** about liking or not liking entertainment content and the only difference would be 95% less drama on most threads.

Point being, maybe consider unless someone calls you out in particular, don't feel the need to "make things miserable for them".
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?

I didn't say or imply anywhere that it was directed at me.

You're projecting.

Rather, I'm talking about the general experience of discussing/anticipating movies on this board. We all have our opinions, and to that end I hardly ever reply to people who simply don't like what I like, aren't looking forward to something as much as me, or straight up don't like what I like.

What I'm getting at is something different, re: those who constantly inject unsubstantiated culture war nonsense, and make every thread/movie political, that I take issue with. Those kinds of posts/thread hijackings have nothing to do with "preference" or "difference of opinions," and everything to do with what is truth, what is rumor, and not wanting to wade through endless complaints about something that almost assuredly isn't going to be in the final product.

There's a big difference between the two, and you're always trying to lump me into the first camp while completely ignoring/denying the second.

But why? I can understand the angst if you were Nolan but why do you care so much if people judge a book by its cover?

Besides this being my profession, which is my biggest reason, I genuinely think the pre-concieved culture-war judgment we're both referring to is a plague on pop culture (along with culture/society in general), and genuinely makes the movie-going/anticipating experience a worse one. It didn't used to be like this a decade ago. I also... care about truth. If only because it's the only thing that can combat all the noise and nonsense.

I don't post on social media/other platforms.

I'm not on some great crusade.

I've simply been posting here for 20+ years, and absolutely love this place when it's fun.

It just so happens to be next door to one of the most conservative places on the internet and, over the last decade, as Hollywood has become more woke, this board has increasingly become the ire of conservatives.

Both fairly and unfairly.

I have no issue with the former. It's the latter/unfairly part I often concern myself with, when it ends up in the threads in which I post. So, I challenge it when I see it, and that's all there is to it.

I don't even remember the last movie that was discussed ad nauseum for concerns around its wokeness, besides Disney which woke nonsense is all they seem to have produced for the last decade.

Was it lightyear? moonlight? Sound of freedom wasn't a woke movie but it had probably the most ridiculous thread this board had seen.
Tea Party
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Not ad nauseum discussion, but Star Wars had a couple of threads but not as intense. Maybe Sinners?

Though not movies but Stranger Things season 5 went pretty far off the deep end and the Harry Potter casting of Snape has led to a fair amount of discussion.

I agree with the first part of the bolded statement. He seems like a Nick Saban type...focused on the product and execution and seems to have zero time or interest in all of the drama/gossip/culture-war stuff.

Re: the latter half...are you claiming that IF Elliot page is actually cast as Achilles, that it won't affect the box office numbers at all? I can tell you that I absolutely will not see it in theaters if she is cast in that role (I don't think she will be). I think there are lots of people who will lose all interest in this movie if that is the choice he makes...even if it's supposed to be a weak and diminished version of Achilles. Tens of millions of people are just s*ck of that stupid kind of sh** and it will absolutely be perceived by many as a ridiculous "hyper woke" choice. My apologies if I am misinterpreting your statement.

Even if the rumors are true, I'm not going to care that much, as Achilles role in the Odyssey is to be a shell of his alive self that is in misery and shame. It's not like he will battle or do anything macho.
