Nolan and his team never comment on this kind of stuff. Like, ever. He simply doesn't give a **** / doesn't dip his toe in culture war issues. Further, this kind of outrage is limited to Twitter crazies/Elon Musk and won't affect the box office in the least. Not for a Christopher Nolan summer blockbuster starring everyone and their dog. Not unless Fox News or whoever starts hemming and hawing, but considering there's no valid sourcing on the rumor, I would be surprised if even they did.

Secondly, literally the exact same thing can be said in the opposite direction. If this rumor were TRUE, someone - some source, insider, reporter, journalist, podcaster, etc - almost assuredly would have confirmed as much by now. Instead? There's been absolutely nothing. No hint or followup of any kind. Again, this is a rumor that started on a random Twitter account, that was then fanned to the extreme by anti-woke outrage, and nothing more (so far).

Could it end up being true?

Sure, it's possible.

But as of now there is ZERO tangible evidence to suggest as much.

I agree with the first part of the bolded statement. He seems like a Nick Saban type...focused on the product and execution and seems to have zero time or interest in all of the drama/gossip/culture-war stuff.

Re: the latter half...are you claiming that IF Elliot page is actually cast as Achilles, that it won't affect the box office numbers at all? I can tell you that I absolutely will not see it in theaters if she is cast in that role (I don't think she will be). I think there are lots of people who will lose all interest in this movie if that is the choice he makes...even if it's supposed to be a weak and diminished version of Achilles. Tens of millions of people are just s*ck of that stupid kind of sh** and it will absolutely be perceived by many as a ridiculous "hyper woke" choice. My apologies if I am misinterpreting your statement.

What I'm saying is, if Page-as-Achilles is true (though, yeah, I'm damn near convinced it's not), if the outrage remained at the level it is now - even if you and everyone like you on TexAgs boycotted the movie - no, it wouldn't have an affect. Whether you like it or not, we are the extremely online, and the extremely online doesn't sway the box office. Not on a Christopher Nolan blockbuster with this cast. MAYBE it puts a small dent in the box office, but that's it.

What I then went on to clarify is, if in this hypothetical, Page-as-Achilles "went mainstream" - as in Jesse Waters & co started ranting about it on Fox News and the like - then, yes, I *do* think the news would affect the box office. Not into "bomb" territory or anything like that, it just wouldn't be quite as successful as it otherwise would have been. After all, if Achilles is even in the movie, it's likely ONE scene of him rising from the dirt, covered in dirt, with a few lines of dialogue tops. That's it. And if this movie is indeed Christopher-Nolan-great, word spreads, and it becomes another Oppenheimer like hit, I'm sorry, even people like you aren't staying away because of 30 seconds of Trans Zombie Achilles. And even if you, specifically, do, too many others would be too curious to see what all the incredible buzz is about.

Show me the quote where I said it's the "singular issue".

And yes, I hope that a game studio, who pushes woke bull****, ultimately fails so their shareholders put pressure on them to back away from the woke stuff.

But we aren't talking about the games industry. We are talking about The Odyssey. The post to which both I and Hardcore Greg replied to was specifically about The Odyssey.

I also revel in the complete failure of all the Disney slop because it is so inundated with that culture.

Nolan has never shown to capitulate to the woke/DEI agenda, as far as I've seen. But the unforced error of the Lupita casting was simply stupid. I still hope the movie turns out being great.

Again... lack of nuance.

Ok

"If a studio releases a woke abomination, it tanks and people are fired."

I'll spare the parts of your post with opinions about hoping woke games fail.
If that quote doesn't read singular, I don't know what does. There are many reasons why a game fails, whether labeled as woke or not.

My point is your posts are speaking out of both sides of the mouth.
There are similar themes in hoping for an entertainment medium's failure based on politics, whether in film or games. You don't have to explain nuance to me

I don't think you do understand nuance. You continually take things out of context or tell me I said something I never did.

You said that I said woke games are the singular issue with the gaming industry. I never said that. I don't think there is a "singular issue with the gaming industry". I do believe the market dictates what fails. There is a pattern with extremely woke games being released, failing miserably, and mass layoffs due to that failure. But that has nothing to do with this particular discussion.

I've also already gone into detail on other threads as to why I believe prioritizing DEI and woke agendas is a big attributing factor to failures of games, movies, shows, etc.

My post didn't speak out of both sides of my mouth. I have opinions on various topics. Your inability to understand my opinions, misquote me, then make a logical jump to mean something else is your failure in understanding nuance.

Again, I was talking specifically about the Odyssey. I claimed I, and many others, are not cheering for it to fail. You can go back in this thread and literally see many posts of mine expressing hope that it ends up being good. So, since you can't find me saying anything contradictory here, you are instead taking a generalized stance over a post or two from random threads to try and pin me with some idea to meet your incorrect assumption about me.

Sorry, I'm not playing that game of you putting words in my mouth. I'm done responding to you.

That's fine, you don't have to respond.
I'm not trying to pin you, you asked for a quote and I gave you one where the meaning is the same based on what's written. I'm noting the inconsistency on wokeism in entertainment when you're making an argument towards others here.
You can point to "failure to understand nuance" or appreciate there's similarity.

This is just a discussion, not an emotional argument.

Did you forget about Snow White ?

You're missing my point.

Again…

This is a Christopher Nolan summer blockbuster.

One of the three biggest movies of the year, alongside Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three.

After Nolan just conquered Hollywood with a billion dollar biopic and Best Picture win.

Featuring maybe the most stacked cast of the decade.

Even the whitest, most anti-woke version of Snow White wouldn't have held a candle to this, in terms of buzz, anticipation, box office, piercing the zeitgeist, etc. Not to mention, Snow White is a family movie in which *parents* decide for the vast majority of the viewing audience - kids - whether or not those kids will see the movie.

In contrast, I'm sorry, y'all can hem and haw all you want, but a one-scene cameo by a trans actor playing a dirt-covered zombie Achilles simply wouldn't keep most fans of…

- Movies
- Blockbusters
- Historical Epics
- Christopher Nolan
- Matt Damon
- Zendaya
- Tom Holland
- Robert Pattinson
- Anne Hathaway

… etc, etc, etc away from this movie.

It just wouldn't.

Especially if the movie is good, which... the chances are obviously in its favor.

As opposed to Snow White, which sucked. In other words, it's not like concerned conservatives killed the box office of an otherwise great movie. Instead, they simply boycotted a bad movie. So... congrats?

Thankfully, in this case, we're almost assuredly not going to have to find out, as I'm damn near convinced the rumor is bunk at this point.

I was in New York the weekend before last, and we actually walked past Scott Pelley on 59th. Nolan was in NY as well, to debut the trailer on Colbert, was being spotted all around town, and I kept an eye out, but of course never saw him. Turns out he and his family saw The Devil Wears Prada 2 in the same theater we did, the night before. And now I'm wondering if that weekend is when Pelley interviewed Nolan. Either way, really looking forward to this...

I did see a post on Twitter which was amusing

that the Spartans were fairly viciously racist- even against OTHER Greeks

much less Africans.

and that there was a court of trial in Sparta that would have crushed any Spartan leader who made a black his partner.

but that's just real history and not good for Hollywood ticket receipts

So now it's keep "most fans" away. Argument shifting from "won't affect the box office at all" to "won't deter most fans".

Seriously? From the beginning (of this particular argument) I've been saying that, yes, it would deter *some* people, but not enough to affect the box office in any meaningful way. Would, like, maybe a couple to a few million or so be lost opening weekend? Sure. But the difference between this movie making, say, $83M and $80M opening weekend wouldn't matter big picture, in the least. That was very obviously my point.

This Emily Wilson person is even worse now that the receipts have been produced. Her complaining the translation was done by Elder White Men is very interesting. Nolan is a fool.

I also love her talking about White Colonial invaders.....
