3 would work for a little kid or someone on greens but I'd be legit very concerned in a 3 buckle type boot on a blue or black even if it seemed to fit well. If my leg is moving around at all in the boot aside from a bit of heel to toe from ankle flex, I'd be nervous. I crank those top buckles down. My foot buckles are relatively loose, but in no way do I want the boot even slightly loose up top. It majority affects my control of the skis, both tips and edge angle.

I'm an intermediate skier trying to get more advanced and I am in 100/100 boots. 100 last 100 flex. I'm only 5'9" 160 so I'm not putting a lot of load on the boot at my ability level, but I still want that sucker snug.

3 buckles.

Top buckle should be flush but not tight like you're describing unless you're unbuckling at uploads. The power strap should be wrapped snug. 2&3 are the most important buckles. I'm shocked your toes don't go nunb and throb from cutting off the blood Supply to the calf and foot.

It would impact your likelihood of developing shin bang. If you have it too loose then the shin wobbles and pressure points when moving downhill on the shin. If they're too tight, the constant pressure will give shin bang. You want it flush but not tight. That top buckle has 0 impact on your edges etc. the buckles that impact your foot and ankle are 2 and 3. You're over compensating the top buckle because you arent buckling 2 correctly which holds your foot against the insole. So you're trying to reduce movement top down and that's backwards in a ski boot and usually leads to shin bang and nunb toes and always produces a large drop in performance. The top buckle has no effect on your edges. None at all.

If you have ankle or foot movement once you've buckled 2-3, the boots too big. If I go out on the hill and my top rathchet isn't closed, I wouldn't know it until I try and sit backseat or switch or really drop into something and feel my calf sliding back into the shell or forward into the tongue. Thats How tight my boots are through the bottom 3 ratchets. The top ratchet eliminates virtualy no movement inside the boot, it Connects the boot to the leg.

Totally crazy aside but this shooting was a block away from us. I think it was on Fox News. So if guys heard about it, our buildings across the street.

https://riviera-maya-news.com/murder-of-tulum-ssc-captain-likely-retaliatory-after-arrests-of-98-gang-members-in-recent-months/2025.html

Our NEW house will be about 2km away from this one BEHIND a Guardia Nacional check point on a private street w an armed private security at front.

We heard at least 50+ round. Probs closer to 100. It was Mexico SHOOTOUT. Didn't stop until the Army showed up. Luckily, kids were at a sleep over across town and didn't see any of it. The shooting was at 5th and 11th (there are no even blocks in that part) and we live at 7th and 11th and We were having dinner at Todo Pita which is like 7th between 5th and 7th. We werent able to go home and had to stay w friends because the entire area was blocked off until the morning. What the ****…Chingaderas!

I'll vouch for bayou. Got me a good deal on a pair of bibs last season.

I have none of the issues you are describing really. Never had foot numbness problems. I just don't like the feeling of my leg above the ankle being loose at all in the boot. Personal preference. 3 buckle is always really snug, 2 and 4 and the strap are snug. 1 is tight enough to stay down. That's what feels best to me. It's snug but not ridiculously so. Probably it's just a semantics difference between how I describe it and how you describe it, most likely.

Come to think of it, I do keep the #2 pretty locked down, but 3 is the most.

I spend a good amount of time down in some degree of carve or short turns and don't make many slip turns or skid turns unless the situation requires more speed control. It doesn't feel right to me if the boot is too loose up top. I just got some all mountain skis that will let me play around with more turn types and off the groomers and that might change it a bit for me.

I have a late season trip planned for Purg but ominously they closed about half the mountain yesterday. Maybe to save on maintenance costs? I mean, they're reporting 48" base, and they were fully open with 32" when I was there in Jan.

It's hot in Durango! I'm guiding all week on the San Juan and it's nearly 80 this week.

Yeah, I noticed that…. Ugh. Maybe I'll have some of that corn snow I read about? Or maybe I should bring a fishing rod and my hiking boots as a backup plan. Looks like it cools back down some later this week.

Heading out to Durango tomorrow and are hoping to ski Purgatory on Friday, but not sure it will be worth it if the temps are as warm as they are expected to be?

I'm gonna buy some mid range boots.

I was leaning atomic magna. K2 has some entry BOA but saw a review on Amazon that torched them.

@Bayou: any brand you feel strongly about? I want a 102+ last. I have big feet.

You only get corn with re-freeze overnight.

Constantly above freezing, enjoy skiing mashed potatoes. Wax, wax and more wax. It will feel like your bases are vacuumed to the snow.

Great time for Graphite + Warm/Spring

For Purl that's Yellow + Grey

Not even freezing overnight for 3 days in Durango. A slight cooling trend Friday.

Fished the bait waters today on the Juan and we crushed!

Lows at the resort show mid 20's this weekend. Maybe that holds higher up a few more days. I can bring my wax and tune kit

buddy of mine just cancelled his Tahoe trip this weekend.

Base looks crappy and 4-5 days of no freezing temps. It'll be like water-skiing.

I'll be there this weekend. Gotta use my free days at Diamond Peak.

It's definitely below freezing at night though. Not sure what your buddy is seeing?

Samsies. We're at Palisades next, next weekend when we get back for DFW. Forecast looks very wintery.

Yep, temps in town aren't the same as temps 1000 or 2000 feet higher up on the mountain. I've never skied this late before so I really am interested to see how it changes. Even relatively poor conditions will be interesting because they will be new for me.

Yup the forecast this week is what made me pull the trigger on getting up to the mountains, perhaps for the last time this season, last week. Hoping for one last storm to try and make one more run but not holding my breath.

Spring skiing is the best. Just a vibe. Wife and daughter love it more than being cold and chasing blower.

In OR, the high terrain finally opens in spring. Stuff like Summit, Palmer and Super Bowl. It stays cold up there, so great corn harvesting!

It's also two sport days! Ski morning, Post Canyon MTB laps in the afternoon. Bliss.

He was going to be at Heavenly which gets real slushy in the afternoon. They had everything cancellable and are rebooking Banff, I believe.

Highs in the 50s and I think the lows get into up 20s and 30s some nights.

I'm sure it'll be fine. Snow looks poor at Heavenly? only 200" for the season their site says?

I don't know where yall are seeing this but man it looks like it'll be great spring skiing weather from what I am looking at

I was there first weekend of March and no doubt their base has been below average this year and the locals were praying for a miracle March, but the skiing was still great, everything open, etc

Shrug. It's not my trip.

Forecast has changed for the better, which I warned him of lol.

It's gotten colder every day and a predicted big dump next week. FWIW he was going this weekend.

They changed their trip to a catamaran charter off the amalfi coast in May. All things considered, I think they chose the better route.

Problem with chasing big dumps / snowfall this late in the season is that half or more is falling rotten. It's not quantity is quality.

I'm driving from central texas so I have to take what I find when I get there, make the best of it. I've had better and worse days skiing so far but I've never had a bad day. Even the day I blew out my knee I had fun. Looks like I might get lucky and catch a cool snap and snow dump.., Looks like late next week base temps highs are low 30's, highs low 20's up top. And a few inches of new snow, if it holds.

Corn snow is crunchy from the thaws and refreezes, and gets granular. Rotten snow is kind of related. It's loose and unstable and slushy.

Well, Purg is going to Fri-Sun operations after this weekend so I have to improvise. I'll divert to Wolf creek and ski Thursday and drive to Durango Thursday afternoon. Haven't been to WC in like 18 years so it should be fun. Two ski resorts in a 3 day trip!

Got my Smith Level and Vantage mips delivered. Did a blind helmet try on, which was fun to try and figure out if a $165 helmet was noticeably better than a $105 (level was on sale).

I preferred the Vantage, but was extremely close in comfort. Only reason was the Vantage had a tiny bit more room for a baclava even though they are both large 59-63cm.

FYI to anyone out there shopping end of year sales.
I'm a 59-59.5, and highly doubt a 61-63 head would fit in a large.
