Slot's general philosophy is for us to retain possession and really dominate the opposition. These types of teams really test this strategy. We were simply too happy to retain the ball without taking appropriate risks. In the few times that Burnley did attack we didn't really push our transitions well and just recycled the ball. A confounding issue is that our wings aren't really explosive. Mo and Cody are smart, technical player but it was very telling that the introductions of Rio and Bradley completely changed the game. I know Rio is only a kid, but he has to play more. He gives our team a dynamic edge that really drives us forward.
If Slot is worried about overexposing Rio, then he has to move Wirtz out to the left wing. He isn't getting much room in the middle of the park which is limiting his impact. We simply have too many players who all want to operate in the left inside channel. Hugo sits in the channel, Wirtz likes to run into it, Cody's main goal is to cut back into it and Macca likes to carry the ball into it....they are all getting in each other's way. We need one of those players to get wider to unclog that space. I think Flo would benefit from the space on that wing despite his desire to play more centrally.
