You have to give up assets to dump EG. He's not going anywhere. Tank commander the next 2 years.
He doesn't have to play the heavy minutes though.

Our biggest issue on defense is transition D. We, for whatever reason, can not get back quick enough. Between that and turnovers we have to get better.

When we actually set up the defense our issue seems to be rotations/responsibilities. Last night for instance, the Bulls got so many wide open looks at the 3 because guys were not switching/rotating and leaving Archie, Lavine, and Markkanen wide open. Part of that is lack of experience and part of it is no practice time.

John Wall is out again....I'm assuming his leg is just sore due to overuse but that will be 5 missed games. They probably need to move him to the bench to protect him when he gets back and not let him get above 30 minutes a game.

Edit: Tonight is actually game 4, this weekend will be 5.

I don't care that much but this refereeing tonight is an absolute crime against the rockets. Some of the worst I've ever seen.

We're too good to tank when fully healthy. Probably still a 7 or 8 seed.

The Suns are a good team now. We showed a lot of fight.

Need to find a trade partner for PJ because his statline tonight.....woof

How in the hell are we a 7 seed when fully healthy?

Maybe I'm way off but I don't think that's even remotely possible with this roster unless other teams that should be 7-10 all have injuries.

Based on the lottery odds, if we tank I think there's a 52% chance we'd get a Top 4 pick. That said, who is on the wishlist for a top 4 pick?

There are just a lot of uncertainties about this team right now. Silas says Wall and House are back on Tuesday. Not gonna hold my breath. Even if they are, can Wall stay healthy all season? Are we still on track to flip Oladipo to a contender? Are we going to find a suitor for Tucker? Just a lot of unknowns. If fully healthy and everyone stays I think this team is a fringe playoff contender. They will probably be in the play-in tournament for the 7/8 seed. Still only 13 games into a 72 game season. Gonna be interesting to follow....

Tucker, Oladipo, and Gordon are all potentially trade bait. Wall is a big injury question. I don't think we'll intentionally tank, but if we do start sending out some of those pieces, it could get ugly, fast.

Could definitely see this going the route of a soft tank through milking injury recovery times rather than a hard tank. But like Farmer said, at full strength, we're too good to tank. If the team were to be fully healthy and playing together for a couple of months, I think we're better than the

TWolves
Spurs
Grizzlies
Thunder
Kings
Pelicans
Mavs (maybe)
Blazers (maybe)

Phew that is some kind of list.

Better than the Thunder? Barely beat them in the playoffs last year with Harden and Westbrook.

Better than the Blazers? They've got Lillard and McCollum in the back court.

Better than the Mavs? They've got one of the best 3 players in the league on their team.

The Kings and the Pelicans? Tons of young raw talent.

Spurs? We're on par with them as LaMarcus Aldridge gets old Willie Mays style and goes from amazing consistency to godawful in the blink of an eye.

Grizzlies? Yes, better than the Grizzlies.

Not when the Grizz get healthy (not a knock on the rockets, as i've been bullish on the Grizz all pre season). I think once they get JJJ and Winslow back this team is going to take off.

Gordon is not trade bait. If anything, Rockets would have to give away picks for someone to take him.

Gordon is what he is, he is a mediocre aging star with a big contract.

It depends how you define "trade bait".

Is Stone going to be able to trade him straight up for anything of value? Probably not - that contract makes it near impossible. Would a playoff team value a player of his caliber coming off the bench? Definitely so.

But even if we had to package him together with picks or other players and received nothing in return other than getting out from underneath that contract, it would be worth it.

He was a net negative player last year when he shot just .510 TS% and was .369/.317 from FG/3.

With a higher 2FG%, he is essentially a replacement-level player that is guaranteed 54mm this year and the next two years. He hasn't shot over 36% from three since the 2016-17 season.

His bad shooting is combined with minus defense and lack of creating for other players. Just 2.5 assists per 36min.
Harry Dunne
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yes, those are all facts. I don't think it's any huge scoop that he's overpaid and had a bad 36 games last season and I don't think it's any huge surprise to anyone that he's not a great player.

It is possible to acknowledge that Gordon is not good and extremely overpaid while at the same time acknowledging that he has some value to some teams.

He's still not worth anywhere near his contract, but he's playing much better this season (so far) - the best he has played for a couple of years. The truth is he has always been an overrated 1-dimensional player, but there are also only so many guys in the league that can both start or come in and score 20 points of the bench and shoot the 3 and have 55 playoff games on their resume and because of those things, he has value to certain teams.

Someone is going to want him and we will be able to get rid of him. That's my only point.

I don't define "trade bait" as having to pay someone to take him off our hands. I think collecting picks is of greater value than offloading Gordon.

If we're going to tank, we might as well eat the salary and save any and all picks we can get. I don't see tanking as a one year process, likely 2-3. By then, he'll be off the payroll. Maybe you get lucky and can trade him as an expiring contract in 2023.
Harry Dunne
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Fair enough and I agree, but I think we will be able to unload him without having to give much up.

Advanced stats are great, but IMO it's pretty simple: There's always going to be a roster spot somewhere for a guy who has scored 20 points in 5 of his last 8 games, can shoot the 3, can affect a game when he's on and is a low-maintenance person.

If he continues to play his way out of last year's funk, there will be a team who at the very least makes it worth our while to make the trade.
