Congrats, you guys have had a great season. My projections for the year were way, way off (it's why I don't gamble). You guys have earned it, and I hope you have a deep run.

For the first time since 1993, neither the Red Sox nor the Yankees will be in the playoffs.

Let us speak truth to the baseball gods...

Derek Jeter is Robin Yount with the best team money can buy, in the most visible city in the nation.

So, first ballot inductee, sure. Spare me the idolatry and clamoring for a unanimous decision.

Yeah, if Ruth, Wagner, Gehrig, Williams, Young, etc, don't get a unanimous vote, the first one better not go to a very good, but by no means earth-shattering, NY pretty boy.

I hope that the BBWA secretly discusses this topic ahead of time. 90% is ok with me.

This talk of unanimous is retarded.

What was Yaz's percentage? I put Jeter in the same category: brilliant player, one of the best of his generation, not on baseball's Mt. Rushmore.

Yaz.

The Yaz comparison is interesting.

Jeter has more hits and a higher lifetime BA. He obviously leads in the rings seeing as Yaz never got one.

Yaz has 192 more home runs, 537 RBI's, more all star appearances and gold gloves and an MVP award.

Both were team captains on legendary teams and played their entire careers in the same uniform. Yaz got a HUGE standing ovation in his final appearance in the Bronx (they didn't do the whole dog and pony show players get these days so it was completely fan driven which, I think, says a lot). He stepped out of the box, took off his helmet to wave to the fans.

Jeter will get a HUGE standing ovation this weekend in Fenway and will get a memorial of some sort although the Sox have called it subdued.

Jeter is a first ballot HOF player. I don't agree that he and Robin Yount are in the same peer grouping. Yount was a 3 time All Star, but he did earn two MVP's to Jeter's zero.

Yount was first ballot at 77%. Yaz was first Ballot at 94%. If Jeter played his entire career in Detroit, he'd still be a first ballot with 88% if the vote. The Yankee factor puts him in at 95% I think.

Jeter isn't even on the yanks Rushmore.

In the right market, good not great over a long career turns into great I suppose.

I initially pulled Yount out of thin air (20 years at same team, primarily at SS), but when I looked at the numbers (Baseball Reference), they aren't that far apart. Yount has a better WAR, Jeter is a more successful hitter, and back and forth. The glossy stuff is where Jeter shines, the team successes in the postseason and the perception driven recognition like ASG appearances. For what it's worth, Yount has a slightly better average postseason performance record than Jeter, albeit in 140 fewer games.

So, in the end, IMHO, he gets a 15% boost because he was a Yankee.

Funny you should say Detroit, though. If I'd really wanted to stir up a hornets' nest, I would echo those guys who put Alan Trammell and Jeter in the same conversation, and we all know Trammell's best hope is the Veterans Committee.

So he's not Ruth, DiMaggio, Mantle, or Gehrig? There lots of room to be great below those four, and the thought that some number of schmucks out there didn't think any of those four should get in on the first ballot (yes, I know DiMaggio had weird circumstances) is abhorrent.

Jeter had many great seasons- '98, '99' '06, and some in between.

Let's see here, the Yankees were predicted to be (and demonstrated) a middling team this season and Token was absent? You don't say...

For the last few weeks, I had been looking over possible playoff scenario's. I didn't mind if we didn't get home field throughout. I didn't mind playing the A's or the Mariners or the Indians or the Blue Jays. Hell I didn't even mind playing the Angels. The only thing I didn't want was having to play the Tigers. I. Just. Don't. Like. This.
