Good point.

The true test to Crane as an owner who is willing to spend to win is going to be retaining Dallas, Colin, and further down the line Jose and Carlos.

Springer will not be cheap either.

Guys, they are about to have to start spending like crazy to keep Keuchel, McHugh, etc.

I would rather them extend Keuchel for forever than sign 31 year old to $200 million.
Altuve is a FA in 2018. Keuchel, Fiers and Gattis in 2019. McHugh in 2020. Giles, Springer and Marisnick in 2021. McCullers, Tucker, Correa are all 2022.

We're three years out from any major commitments. This is the time to spend, when they're all cheap.

Arbitration all hitting at the same time is going to hurt.

You can see what I'm talking about here. http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/HOU/2015-payroll-salaries.shtml

There were talks circulating of dealing Springer for Chapman

Those are just one year commitments though, and it'll still be well below market value. Even at $19 million in arbitration last year, David Price was a bargain off the $30 million he could command on the open market. We've got a great controllable core at discounted rates for the next 3-5 years, and they're not going to get any cheaper. If we don't spend now, we never will.

This is where being creative with contracts comes into play. We can make moves now and front load contracts to where we aren't blowing the roof off in 3+ years. But instead, we're sitting here pinching pennies getting prepared for something that's 3+ years down the road.

A starter like Kazmir, Leake, Gallardo is what we need to be after. It sounds like we're following their markets but we better not bow out over money. It better be extra years on contracts. A 4, maybe 5, year deal is our sweet spot with the current roster.

Also, don't forget that Feldman ($10 mil), Gomez ($8 mil), Rasmus ($15.8 mil), Valbuena (estimated $6 mil) and possibly Neshek ($6.5 mil option) come off the books next year. Before free agency, Keuchel will likely be our only salary over $7 million.

I want to see deals get done with our studs well before their contracts are up. I guy like Keuchel is gonna get a load in arbitration. Might as well just sign him to a long term deal to make sure he doesn't leave

If Valbuena is still on the roster after 2016, we will have bigger problems than money.

My point was that we have tons of money freed up after next year....Feldman, Gomez, Valbuena, Rasmus and Neshek will be 5 of our 6 highest paid players this year

Even if we sign him to a long term deal before FA, he's likely going to have an escalating contract during his would-be arbitration years peaking at his would-be free agent years.

His three arbitration years are probably worth less than $40 million. Price set the arbitration record last year with $19.75 million, but he was a Super 2 and got to go through arbitration 4 times, which helped him jump his final arbitration year way up.

it will be interesting to see what happens with Altuve in 2018. His fate may lie in Bregman's development.

and regarding Springer...he still needs to pick up his numbers to hit a big payday. Gotta bump up the BA and power numbers

If we still have big holes in the infield or outfield by 2018, then you cannot let him walk.

Unless Jose drops off, I don't really care what Bregman is doing. Jose does too much to be let go.

Springer just needs to stay healthy. There's not much he can do about up-and-in pitches breaking his wrist, but he could tone it down a little in the outfield. I love his defense and his intensity, but he can't play with a total disregard for his body like he sometimes does, crashing into walls and diving everywhere.

I think the power returns this year for George, and he keeps his average around the .280-85 mark. I also think he gets his first 30-30 season and plays in the All-Star game.

As for Altuve, I think he has the best hand-eye coordination in the game right now. If he could just develop a little more plate discipline and not get himself out so much, he could be a consistent .350 hitter that gets on base at around a .400 clip. Even if he stays in the .310-40 range, it'll be tough to let him walk unless Bregman is absolutely tearing it up.
