Rasmus is why I don't understand how someone can conclude that we had an underwhelming offseason. We practically signed him as a free agent. That would be a good signing for any team considering his overall numbers and what he did in the postseason.
Rasmus is just solid ball player. He's not All Star caliber, but he's a solid MLer. If it wasn't for his postseason run I think we would've all been OK with him leaving. And honestly with the draft pick we would've gotten we may have come out ahead.
He fits what this team does and he adds a nice veteran presence on an overall young team. I think that's where he's worth the 15M we're paying him. His talent and production alone don't justify that salary, but his intangibles do. He's important to us but not so much other clubs and it wasn't a need going into the off season so I think the consensus is it wasn't a very impressive get.
I think the fact that we only addressed 1 of our 4 needs (back end BP, 1B/3B, DH, and C) gives folks the sense that our offseason sucked.

The catcher and 3B situation worries me, though. Not so much defensively, but offensively for sure
Minus the draft pick compensation, I'd be all for looking at Desmond to man 3rd for us.

Do you think Reed breaks ST with the big club? My bet is he starts the year in the minors and Singleton, Valbuena and Marwin platoon 1B.

I think you're right, but he also may stay on with the club and spot start just to keep the pressure on Singleton and not let him think that it's his job.
By all accounts it seems Jon has gotten this message already and taken this off season seriously, but I don't think there's anything wrong with keeping him on his toes and honestly, I hope Jon has a short leash.

No thought to letting Bregman play SS and move CC to 3rd? Is that even an option?

I don't think we'll see Bregman until 2017. He finished at High-A last year.

I don't think you want to take the best SS in the league and move him to 3B to make room for an unproven prospect.
If Bregman shows he's got the talent then I think eventually that may happen, but I think they wait and see how he pans out.

I'm just going quickly through the roster here, but since we return so many position players, we're pretty limited on spots unless someone looks awful in ST and gets cut.
Catcher (2): Castro, Stassi
IF (5): correa, Altuve, singleton, Marwin, Valbuena
OF (4): Gomez, Rasmus, springer, marisnick/tucker
DH (1): Gattis
That's 12 entrenched position players, meaning we have one position player spot open, and that could easily go to a 5th OF since Valbuena and Marwin can both be utility IF guys. Although I think they'd probably rather have a RH corner IF to platoon with Valbuena and Singleton.

I wish we could've found a way to deal from our OF surplus to address our corner IF need. Maybe Luhnow will get traction on a deal when teams start to trim their rosters toward the end of ST.

Most people that grade offseasons do so with a very short-sighted point of view, like next season only. Because we didn't address 1B or 3B, people are going to be critical of our offseason. But not signing free agents and clogging the corner spots for a few years will likely end up being the best move we made.
I think they really wanted Gattis to serve as the second catcher, freeing up another bench spot. Someone will fill Gattis' spot out of camp, and then I could see Stassi being sent down when Gattis is ready.
Played golf with Lance McCullers a couple weeks back. Very impressive young man. He's got his head screwed on right. Looking forward to seeing him play this season-think he takes it up a notch this year, he is focused.

And I will always buy fitted hats that I try on first... Got the same hat for Christmas in 7 3/8, but it was too big.. Went into the store and got a 7 1/4... Got home and it was way too small. Worker said they are hand made so the sizes will actually vary.

3. Tyler Heineman does magic tricks. I suggest his nickname be The Magic Man. And when he hits a dinger, I think it should be called a Homeruneman.

I have the hardest damn time finding hats that don't look like crap on me. Normal flat bills are a no go. Ordered a low crown, nope.
The only ones that remotely work are the new era 39thirty, and even these give me some headache (pun intended).
