Spider-Man was the first PG-13 movie I saw in theaters. Tonight made me feel like a kid again.

To see Tobey, Doc Ock, Defoe on screen again. To see Garfield rescue MJ. Smile on my face the whole time. Sony did an excellent job of essentially writing Spidey out of the MCU. I guess he can still show up when they like but all his ties and friendships to Stark, Happy, the Avengers, etc have been cut.

Ok I know reactions will keep coming in, but what do we think this movie means for

1) Spider-man moving forward in the MCU

2) Tom Holland as Spider-man

To me this seems like a clean cut way to part ways with both. No one in the MCU will remember Peter. And although a bittersweet note, it's a solid story arc to leave the character with for Tom.

I'd love to see more Tom Holland Spider-man, but his comments lately (negotiating tactics or not) have me wondering if this is his No Time To Die, so to speak.

Thoughts?

My wife from the minute the first trailer hit through last night:
"I don't know the story."
"The kids won't understand it."
"I don't really like superhero movies."
"I want to watch something I'll enjoy."

Wife checks Facebook feed this morning, sees half of her cult social circle raving about movie.

Wife: "Let's go see Spider-man tomorrow night! I can't wait!"

Before this movie I had never considered this being Holland's last MCU movie, but that they'd have him continue on in the Sony-verse. Yet that's absolutely the vibe I got from this. That said, I'm pretty sure the head of Sony said recently that Holland has one last Disney/MCU movie on his contract? At least in terms of an appearance (as opposed to a whole movie about him)?

What I'm confused about is the trailer for Doctor Strange 2 (which looks incredible, btw), because the events of No Way Home are specifically referenced in that trailer. Strange is essentially being reprimanded for being so reckless and opening up the multiverse. But if he doesn't remember Parker, how are they going to have him remembering opening up the multiverse? Won't he have to remember Parker for the basic plot/set-up of DS2 to work? If so, maybe that's where Holland's final appearance comes in, in an extended cameo of sorts?

Here's the interview I was thinking of…

Quote:

In a recent interview with CB Rothman said, "It's reciprocal. So we lend one, and they lend one, and that's how Benedict [Cumberbatch] is in this movie. So we have one more 'lend back' that's committed. But the thing that I can say, and this actually the accurate scoop on this, which is that the two companies have a terrific working relationship. I think it's a mutual hope that that would continue. But there really isn't anything definitive at this moment, because the truth of the matter is, we gotta ride [Spider-Man: No Way Home] and see what happens."

Yeah him crying after the screening had me think, "Oh maybe he IS done with solo films".

I think the dialogue from that Doctor Strange trailer is misleading. Maybe he is dabbling in the multiverse in other ways that are not related to NWH. Or maybe that line is directed at Wanda -- she is looking for her kids, remember.

Anyway, it feels like there isn't a way to bring Peter Parker back into the MCU that wouldn't create problems later on that the ending of this nicely avoids. I'm really interested to see what happens with the character moving forward.

I feel like there's some serious misdirection going on with the MoM trailer. The trailer is positioning Strange Supreme from What If as the main villain but I have a feeling Wanda is the true main "villain" of MoM and is directly responsible for a bunch of the multiverse chaos.

Saw this yesterday and I'm so glad I did. I figured Garfield and Maguire would pop up, but had no idea they would basically be co-stars.

This movie really hit all the emotional high points and my wife was in tears for most of the second half of the movie.

Crowd went nuts multiple times like y'all have said (biggest reaction for Garfield, followed by Maguire and Daredevil).

I know they will bring back the character bc he's way too valuable and popular to not use him, but man, that was such a perfect send off for Holland.

The villains were all great in their roles and meshed into a cohesive story.

I did think Holland was looking a little old for high school, but that's forgivable.

The Dr. Strange preview at the end seems remarkably similar to his standalone from the What If?

Not sure if it's because of the emotional drain of the past 2 years or what, but I got the feels for this movie a lot more than I did even for Endgame. I've always been a huge sucker for nostalgia and seeing people return to their roles, and even though I probably haven't seen either of the Garfield movies all the way through, I thought he was sensational in this film, and Toby returned to his earnest, aw shucks, Spider-man splendidly. Taking nothing away from Holland, he really unleashed the emotional stuff, but the other two's appearances were special, particularly talking about Gwen and Uncle Ben.

The scene where the three talk about the weirdest villain they've fought was one of the funniest things ever in a Marvel movie for me.
Totally agree with this. My wife was asking me about evil Dr Strange and I told her she has to watch What If for that.

Yeah, seriously Dafoe stole the movie. Just a bipolar presence and a super well-written character.

Such a downer of a movie for ol' Webhead though, huh? I guess he's shown as being happy with the way things turned out for everyone else at the end, but man... he's left with less than nothing at the end.

Loved all the fan-service bits thrown in. Too many to count and there will probably be some who say they overdid it, but it really just made me happy and that's all I care about. Haha.

God they absolutely smashed that out of the park.

Just the perfect amount of fan service. They could have easily leaned into it and been too much but it was so complimentary to a unique and authentic story, it was perfect.

Also, Tom Holland has really come into his own as an actor. This movie having a bit of a heavier tone allowed him to not have to do the goofy teenager stuff as much, and he absolutely killed the more serious tone. Of course, while also still embodying the friendly neighborhood Spiderman lightness. He's transformed into a really great actor over the last 5 years.

I'm super excited about the future of the MCU and the independent(ish) Sony Spiderverse. If Marvel and Sony can keep it together and stay on the same page the possibilities are really really fun.

Can we just heap more love on Andrew Garfield? C'mon, we ALL knew he was lying, but not only did he keep a completely serious face about his non-involvement all this time....but he delivered a performance BETTER than he was in his two Spider-Man movies. He may be the MVP of this film.

I loved that they did not attempt to de-age Tobey Maguire for his Peter Parker. Since time didn't really mean anything, it was cool that they wrote him as being an older, more mature Peter Parker. Sounds like he found a nice balance between being Spider-Man and being married to MJ.

As for everyone else, I feel like they did a good job de-aging the other characters without it drawing much attention to it.

I just can't get over how well they used all the villains. Each one - even Curt Connors - had way more to do than I was expecting. Granted, Connors and Sandman didn't really have significant arcs, which is fine, but Doc Ock, Electro, and of course Osborne, had legitimate, meaningful arcs that made for truly great story. We've never really seen a redeem-the-villain approach like this, and it worked so well and was so incredibly satisfying. Everyone had their moments, and didn't feel cheated at all, and I just can't believe none of felt even remotely overstuffed. I mean, the entire sequence in Happy's condo, with all five villains (with Lizard downstairs) was so damn cool and so damn fun, even the standing around parts. All of them simply being present together, in the same space, and interacting the way they did, carried an energy unlike any superhero movie I've ever seen. I really am in shock at the whole thing.

Otto getting a hero moment legit brought tears to my eyes.

This movie had no right to be this good and should have toppled under its weight.

Aunt May getting the responsibility line and then dying had me just straight up emotional. And then you get the other Peter's saying how their rage led them to a dark place.

I also couldn't get over how legitimately great and witty and funny the dialogue was throughout.

This redeem the villain stuff absolutely made those previous films retroactively better

So it clearly doesn't have Peter in the Sony verse since Venom went back. And people still know Spider-man, so clearly he still has as involved with the events of Endgame but his mask never came off I guess.

That's quintessential for Spider-Man comic stories. He's gone through some dark times and has seen a lot of things. Just stays focused and selfless the whole way through, even if he comes off as a jerk at times. For a seemingly happy-go-lucky character he has some super serious and dark stories.

I loved the other 2 being freaked that Tobey shoots webbing out of his body.

I thought Lizard got a bit of short shrift given how strong/tough he was in Amazing Spider Man. But I guess with each one of them, there are slight differences. Electro wasn't as goofy.
