Man, I love this so much. Thank you for posting it. We don't have circus strongmen running around anymore in boots and singlets and belts to harken to. I suppose the closest thing would be wrestlers, but the answer he is so much better.

Superman is a character created by two second generation Jewish immigrants in 1938.

He has always been a reflection of whatever modern society needed him to be and an allegory for modern issues for 87 years.

Literally in his first comic he fights a wife beater and a crooked Senator. The "American Way" saying was added in 1952 for the original TV show during the Red Scare. His radio show helped fight the KKK. Silver Age Superman was even more progressive. He wrote on the Moon for all to see "Do good to others and every man can be a Superman."
Those are very clear-cut issues though. Good vs. evil. And his character was a great way to showcase that.

Trying to use him for subjective social commentary today isn't a good idea IMO and it cheapens the character.

I agree with this, and that's why I hope that the movie sticks with the generalized sentiment of treating others with respect and kindness, and veers away from pointed current political statements. But the point is I'm willing to see the actual movie first before I start performative raging.
.
Well said.

I just find the crusading from either extreme to be so exhausting.

I've just gotten to the point where I reject the purist nature by which things are presented today. I'm never going to be where someone else thinks I should be.

I was clearly referencing the comics that were posted.

That last tweet is hilarious. "Denied climate change and science". Let's shoehorn in even more political b.s.

Zero issue with Superman being an immigrant. It's integral to his story. But I also don't think you can equate a fictional, God level space alien with someone from Mexico sneaking into Texas.

To Gunn, I can be kind and still say illegal immigrants should follow the legal path to get there like millions before them have.

It's the sane, common sense approach to this issue and is better for all if adhered to.
Didn't you know Krypton was destroyed by climate change denial?

I didn't think I said anything about modern vs historical progressive so I didn't know where that rant came from.

My main point was that Superman, among other characters, was created and used to make various political points and messages through the years(admittedly less so for Superman the last~40 years). So doing so in 2025 shouldn't be a shocking event.

I don't think they were clear cut good vs. Evil at the time they were written about. They are more clear cut now under a modern lens.

Let's take these in order.

1. The overwhelming majority of so-called "progressives" in this country are utterly anti-Jewish, and it's not even debatable.

2. The overwhelming majority of so-called "progressives" in this country fully supported a male violently beating the **** out of a woman in a boxing ring, just because said male decided that he was a woman in his mind.

3. The so-called "progressives" in this country willingly put members of the Clinton family and the Biden family up as candidates in the last three presidential elections. I don't need to go through the full list because Burisma and the Clinton Foundation alone have exemplified more obvious corruption out of so-called "progressives" than we have ever seen out of anyone on the other side of the aisle.

4. So-called "progressives" in this country are the only ones openly advocating for race-based discrimination, and the party of the so-called "progressives" is the one that founded the KKK.

5. So-called "progressives" in this country are the driving force behind cancel culture: if a person sins against the arbitrary moving target of leftist ideals, they are not treated with dignity and no good is done to them. They are ostracized, humiliated, threatened, and insulted until the mob grows tired and moves on. There is no forgiveness in modern so-called "progressivism." Also, modern so-called "progressivism" is morally relativistic. There is no foundation for such a thing as "good" or "evil." Good has no meaning beyond whatever is politically expedient for the "progressive" agenda. There can be no "good" done because what is "good" is fluid and therefore meaningless.

Nothing about Superman has anything to do with modern so-called "progressivism."

Let's take these in order:

1. Please don't ruin this thread. If you really want to debate modern views of party vs party take it somewhere else, because there is no way this ends with the thread being readable. You're going from debating meaning or intent to straight politics.

I get that there is probably going to be debate around the film, but at this point we have no idea what is or isn't in the film so let's at least wait to cross that bridge when we come to it.
This thread was ruined days ago by this crap. TC, who takes any Hollywood criticism personally, and the rest of the usual suspects who live to spar with him can't seem to let it go, so we're pages into that nonsense with little real talk about the movie itself that doesn't involve politics/"progressives"/etc.

Politicizing a blockbuster, that you're using to get a franchise up off the ground, is stupid.

When the fanbase you need is old white dudes.

My 10yo could have told him "don't say that".

Almost all of our favorite media has some hidden politics in it to various degrees. The best media that stands the test of time usually has something to say too
The Captain America movies have political messages about government surveillance, political overreach, and individual freedoms. And they are better for it.

I'm not arguing that this movie doesn't need "old white dudes" to show up to some degree, but it really does seem through everything I've seen that Gunn is making this a more family oriented Superman like the Reeves version. Less like the Snyder version that absolutely relied on the 18-45 year old hetero male demographic.

Here's the thing.

YOU DON'T TALK ABOUT IT.

They never did before, until all the money was banked, on the Academy Awards stage.

When you're rebooting a franchise, you're dumb to alienate what is going to be your biggest audience.

I think the movie's audience is a lot wider than you think. Nobody I know who is going to the movie fits your descriptions.

But up till now no one had written a blog post.

I missed (skipped) the other drama but that surprisingly didn't completely blow up, so this is my attempt to play Superman and save the thread.

I'll agree with you there. Generally the less said by creators about themes before a release the better. There is some period of time after release where it works better.

But that is the modern trend to talk about all that stuff way to soon.

I hope all of this political talk be for naught when/if the movie ends up just being a great Superman story

Hell, in the interview clip he intervenes without political intention and gets upset when Lois calls it a political move.
