I'm reading IO9's rank of all the Superman movies. They have all the trailers posted. I can't even imagine being an adult Superman fan, enjoying the heck out of I and II, and then seeing this pile of trash on the screen as the preview for #3. Good grief.

Lots of records flying around here for the first title in DC's phase one "Gods and Monsters": First, that's a preview record for a James Gunn directed film besting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's $17.5M ($118.4M 3-day) and it's also the best damn previews we've seen all year ahead of Disney's Lilo & Stitch ($14.5M, $146M 3-day opening) and Captain America: Brave New World ($12M, $88.8M 3-day).

While Warners was hoping for a $100M 3-day start and tracking and exhibition were spotting $115M-$130M, Superman, looks to be leaving all those projections in the dust.

Quote:

Other intriguing benchmarks: Gunn's Superman is easily ahead of the preview box office of Zack Snyder's 2013 Man of Steel ($9M, 10pm start time, different era for previews, $116.6M opening) and there's a shot when we wake up tomorrow morning it could be higher than Matt Reeves' The Batman from 2022 which did $21.6M in overall previews (including $4M Tuesday shows and Thursday showtimes that began at 3PM; $134M opening). Gunn's Superman is close to the sun as far preview records go for Superman movies overall, but hasn't surpassed it (and that's not a bad thing) meaning 2016's Batman v. Superman holds the record for the best previews ever for a Superman movie with $27.7M ($166M 3-day).

From Matt Belloni's newsletter tonight…

Quote:

Gunn's "ego" saved DC millions: If Superman opens big this weekend, as is now expected, it won't be due to star power. Of the 20 or so principal castmembers introduced onstage and in the audience at the Chinese Theatre premiere on Monday night, there was not a single big movie star among them. "I think I'm really good at finding people who become huge stars," DC's James Gunn bragged to CNN, admitting to a "bit of an ego" about casting. (So there's Chris Pratt in Guardians and… who else?)

Nicholas Hoult, who got $2 million to play Lex Luthor, is the highest paid in the Superman cast, per three sources. Makes sense; he's an established name in film. David Corenswet earned just $750,000 to don the blue and red Underoos - about the going rate for unknowns in franchise roles. Rachel Brosnahan, a TV star untested in film, also earned $750,000 as Lois Lane. All three are in line for box office bonuses if Superman performs, of course. Gunn may have cast with his eye rather than his wallet, but his strategy is likely a hit with Warner Discovery C.E.O. David Zaslav, who seemed downright giddy when I bumped into him at the premiere - and that was before the positive reviews dropped. It's also a far cry from Man of Steel, in 2013, which surrounded a then-unknown Henry Cavill with the much pricier Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane, and Russell Crowe.

Yep, lol. I was born in '76, so this was my introduction to Superman movies, and man that part freaked me out.

My father was a computer programmer. Watching Richard Pryor (Gus) sit down in front of a monitor for the first time in his life and magically produce any result he wanted, with 10 seconds of typing, infuriated him.

7 year old me was just confused and, sadly, bored.

Not necessarily huge stars, but off the top of my head he put Karen Gillan, Michael Rooker, and Pom Klementieff in their first big film roles. Corenswet and Brosnahan look to be adding to the list and sounds like a few others in the film have a lot of potential.

I actually think I liked "Man of Steel" better for aesthetics and story line, but the movie was basically ruined for me by the never ending punching contest with Zod at the end. That was so stupid and a waste of what seemed like an hour of film. The climate of this movie was much better thought out.

So I decided on a whim to rewatch Snyder's Batman v. Superman on a flight yesterday. This time I came away just overwhelmed by how much that Superman seemed to be ruled by anger . Short-tempered, morose, with zero patience. Obviously he was willing to sacrifice himself for humanity, but overall it didn't seem like he was trying as Superman (Superman mind you, not Clark Kent) to endear himself to humankind. The Snyder movies portrayed him as this silent guardian who's constantly weighed down by the responsibility of protecting humanity and lets it show. In fact, it causes him to distance himself from humanity (again, as Superman).

The Reeve version seemed to relish interacting with humans as Superman. I like that so much more and feel like it represents Superman so much better. Which is why I'm getting more and more excited about seeing Gunn's version tonight. Granted I'm not a comic book Superman expert, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

That's a good take on the contrast between Cavill's Superman and Reeve's Superman.

I truly did enjoy that different look at Superman in the Synder universe, but that didn't represent the Superman of decades of comics, TV series, and movies. Corenswet's Superman is much more like Reeve's.

I think it should have ended when they destroyed the world engine. Zod should have been swept up in that like Faora and Non. Show a few clips of Superman helping with the rubble, then the Daily Planet scene.

I could be wrong but I think Snyder said somewhere that he didn't have time for Clark Kent or didn't see the point in him, or something like that. Kind of like killing Jimmy Olsen off because he wasn't necessary to the story Snyder wanted to tell.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe it was just commentary ABOUT Snyder but I think it holds water. Post-MoS flashbacks, I feel like "Clark" is in about 5 scenes between donning the cape and dying and being brought back in Justice League (Whedon version, admittedly, but the ZSJL we got had the benefit of hindsight and twice the runtime).

Clark shows up a lot more in the extended version of BvS, where he goes to Gotham to investigate the prisoners dying and it lends to his distrust of Batman's methods

Not reading too much of this thread because I don't want spoilers, but would love some feedback if this would be appropriate for 11 year-olds? My niece, nephew and my daughter are begging me to take them this week. They've seen every single film in the Avengers saga, for context.

There's about 4 curse words and nothing scary. It's a 1000x lighter than the Snyder movies.

Saw it tonight and think it's my favorite Superman and DC movie (and I really don't care much for DC in general). Really like Gunn's style and his slightly campy take on Superman is my favorite - way better than the serious/dark Superman.

Thought the casting was great all around...even Lex. Thought Brosnahan was the perfect choice for Lois - she evokes a quirky and humorous but pure and old fashioned sort of image that goes perfect in this film

If you don't like this movie I just don't know what to say. Maybe stick to Driving Miss Daisy or something.
