'Superman' Soaring To $21M+ In Previews: Best YTD & Record For James Gunn https://t.co/fWBEbCPjmt
— Deadline (@DEADLINE) July 11, 2025
Quote:
Lots of records flying around here for the first title in DC's phase one "Gods and Monsters": First, that's a preview record for a James Gunn directed film besting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's $17.5M ($118.4M 3-day) and it's also the best damn previews we've seen all year ahead of Disney's Lilo & Stitch ($14.5M, $146M 3-day opening) and Captain America: Brave New World ($12M, $88.8M 3-day).
While Warners was hoping for a $100M 3-day start and tracking and exhibition were spotting $115M-$130M, Superman, looks to be leaving all those projections in the dust.
Quote:
Other intriguing benchmarks: Gunn's Superman is easily ahead of the preview box office of Zack Snyder's 2013 Man of Steel ($9M, 10pm start time, different era for previews, $116.6M opening) and there's a shot when we wake up tomorrow morning it could be higher than Matt Reeves' The Batman from 2022 which did $21.6M in overall previews (including $4M Tuesday shows and Thursday showtimes that began at 3PM; $134M opening). Gunn's Superman is close to the sun as far preview records go for Superman movies overall, but hasn't surpassed it (and that's not a bad thing) meaning 2016's Batman v. Superman holds the record for the best previews ever for a Superman movie with $27.7M ($166M 3-day).

Gunn's "ego" saved DC millions: If Superman opens big this weekend, as is now expected, it won't be due to star power. Of the 20 or so principal castmembers introduced onstage and in the audience at the Chinese Theatre premiere on Monday night, there was not a single big movie star among them. "I think I'm really good at finding people who become huge stars," DC's James Gunn bragged to CNN, admitting to a "bit of an ego" about casting. (So there's Chris Pratt in Guardians and… who else?)
Nicholas Hoult, who got $2 million to play Lex Luthor, is the highest paid in the Superman cast, per three sources. Makes sense; he's an established name in film. David Corenswet earned just $750,000 to don the blue and red Underoos - about the going rate for unknowns in franchise roles. Rachel Brosnahan, a TV star untested in film, also earned $750,000 as Lois Lane. All three are in line for box office bonuses if Superman performs, of course. Gunn may have cast with his eye rather than his wallet, but his strategy is likely a hit with Warner Discovery C.E.O. David Zaslav, who seemed downright giddy when I bumped into him at the premiere - and that was before the positive reviews dropped. It's also a far cry from Man of Steel, in 2013, which surrounded a then-unknown Henry Cavill with the much pricier Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane, and Russell Crowe.

Such a terrible movie….but holy crap that scene where the chick gets turned into a machine from that computer HAUNTED me as a young child….

And those of us that were a bit older (high school junior when that steaming pile was released) just laughed out loud.jokershady said:

Not necessarily huge stars, but off the top of my head he put Karen Gillan, Michael Rooker, and Pom Klementieff in their first big film roles. Corenswet and Brosnahan look to be adding to the list and sounds like a few others in the film have a lot of potential.Quote:

And this screenshot was in a PG movie for 9 year olds like me to speculate on what it might mean.jokershady said:

That's a good take on the contrast between Cavill's Superman and Reeve's Superman.FL_Ag1998 said:
So I decided on a whim to rewatch Snyder's Batman v. Superman on a flight yesterday. This time I came away just overwhelmed by how much that Superman seemed to be ruled by anger . Short-tempered, morose, with zero patience. Obviously he was willing to sacrifice himself for humanity, but overall it didn't seem like he was trying as Superman (Superman mind you, not Clark Kent) to endear himself to humankind. The Snyder movies portrayed him as this silent guardian who's constantly weighed down by the responsibility of protecting humanity and let's it show. In fact, it causes him to distance himself from humanity (again, as Superman).
The Reeve version seemed to relish interacting with humans as Superman. I like that so much more and feel like it represents Superman so much better. Which is why I'm getting more and more excited about seeing Gunn's version tonight. Granted I'm not a comic book Superman expert, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
‘Superman’ opened in North America with $22.5 million in preview grosses, the highest such result since ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ ($38 million) last July and ‘Barbie’ ($22 million) the July before that. It’s up, up and away for Warner Bros. and DC Studios‘ “Superman,” which got off the ground with $56.5 million across Friday and preview screenings. That’s the second-biggest such figure for the calendar year, floating just behind “A Minecraft Movie” ($57.11 million) and ahead of… pic.twitter.com/5UIcHPYanF

Not reading too much of this thread because I don't want spoilers, but would love some feedback if this would be appropriate for 11 year-olds? My niece, nephew and my daughter are begging me to take them this week. They've seen every single film in the Avengers saga, for context.
