Seen multiple people refer to it as an extended episode of a CW show, which if true...ugh.
Just so uninterested in that vibe personally.
This is a movie that is unashamed at being earnest. It is the idea that it is punk rock to not be snarky and to give a **** about people when you compare it to our current culture. If that is too CW then maybe.
You do get that.Claude! said:Saxsoon said:Brian Earl Spilner said:

Haven't seen it yet, but your statement gives me hope. That's exactly the Superman I want - the Big Blue Boy Scout who embodied idealized small town values.

I feel like Gunn's gift as a director is finding ways to make you feel truly connected to characters.
If someone had told me that I'd fall in love with a talking tree and a raccoon with a machine gun by the end of the opening scene in Guardians I'd have thought they were nuts, but here we are.

Oh dear. What we have here is a Howard the Duck, a Hudson Hawk, a big budget stinker which feels like the end of superhero films, when it should have been the beginning of something new.
James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy films for Marvel were a revelation, even within the context of Marvel's peak years. They had wit, effortless quirkiness and a daring devil-may-care attitude to the pretensions of the genre, and Gunn seemed to be a fine choice for Warner Bros., who recruited him to be the co-executive overseer of the new DC Universe. After the moody places the last Superman got to, with Zack Snyder's grim Batman vs Superman and joyless Justice League, bringing in a bit of Guardians' snarky, funny bite looked to be, well, the perfect route out of Ever Increasing Darkness.
But sadly, what we have here is very little Guardians magic. None of the verve or anarchy, only the silliness. It is slight, nonsensical, and only sporadically funny
