The ingredient that Disney seems to have lost is "charm." There is just something about the old animation style that brought characters to life in a way that is lost today. Disney's "Nine Old Men" weren't infected with modern cynicism and attitude and it showed in the way they worked.El Gallo Blanco said:
I don't know if I agree with the notion that Snow White was so outdated it was always going to be an uphill climb...it should have been easy to basically breathe new life into this beloved old story.
Check out this deleted scene from the original "Snow White" -- it was cut prior to completion due to Walt's feeling that it didn't advance the plot. But it's chock full of humor and charm. The dwarves come to life and display unique personalities due to the skills of animator Ward Kimball.
I get why Walt Disney cut this scene from SNOW WHITE, but man, it's a shame to lose so much beautifully squashy and stretchy animation by Ward Kimball. Gorgeous stuff. pic.twitter.com/JvQWAuNZ3C

If Disney could recapture that, they could create new classics and revive old ones.
