Surprising, but probably the correct outcome. You shouldn't be able to walk into someone else's house and kill them.

No. In my opinion, not guilty was the right call, but murder was a close second. I honestly don't think the average person is capable of handling the jury instructions that we're given.

Honestly I think murder with 5 years is the best case for the community as a whole.

So you were in fact the one out for social justice. Got it.

I think it needs to be 10 years and a day, she doesn't deserve an appellate bond.

Kind of what I was thinking earlier. Murder conviction with a sentence on the light end is probably what should happen.

I dont think a jury of TexAgs posters could have come a 'better' solution. We would have probably become a hung jury because we'd think about it too much. (not saying in this case but) Sometimes the 'average people' know more than a bunch of keyboard jockeys and attorneys like us.

Don't know if this has been posted regarding the make up of the jury, so....

Jean's family lawyer in the civil case, Lee Merritt, tweeted on Monday, "We are all relieved that the jury hearing the #AmberGuyger case reflects the diversity of Dallas County where the crime took place. From my estimation 5 black jurors, 5 Hispanic/Asian, 2 white (2 black & 2 white alternates)."

Justice is not. And I think this is the right verdict. I agree she should be punished severely.

Applauding and cheering in front of the convicted as if you scored a touchdown is disgusting, repugnant and reprehensible. It shows a lack of fundamental human decency.

True. I would just love to be a fly on the wall and know if they discussed how the state cleared the "mistake of fact" and "self-defense" portions. If they went through both of those properly, then I have no problems with their verdict.

Is it not possible to realize it is a tragedy on BOTH sides and be empathetic for BOTH sides on this? I believe her that it was an honest, terrible mistake. You keep looking at it from the Botham Jean side, but using your own emotional appeals, imagine if Amber was your daughter or sister. You believe she made a terrible mistake, thought she was in her apartment, and believed she was acting self defense. Legitimately believed she was in danger and in her own apartment. But yet you want to cheer at her conviction? I see both sides, I see how murder was the verdict, and I also see how she could have walked given this incredibly unique set of circumstances. But to assume Botham Jean was "just another guy" to people who think that the state didn't prove beyond reasonable doubt that her mistake in fact defense was reasonable is obtuse.

If she's my daughter I'd like to think I recognize that at least I can still see her, talk to her, visit her in prison, then when I look across the room and see a mother and father that can't do those things, I realize I will never feel the pain they went through, and that I'm in no position to judge them for their actions.

The state was supposed to prove that it was unreasonable to think she was in her apartment. As someone who has walked to the wrong door in a similar complex I can believe her claim.

From there they have to prove it wasn't self defense. Which i don't think they did.

The jury found otherwise.

She needed to found guilty of something. Both murder and manslaughter were weird fits given the "mistake of fact" and trying to interpret her intent. I'm not surprised the jury came back with a guilty verdict though, but I would have guessed manslaughter as a compromise. Having said that, the sentencing will be the big thing here. I don't know how many years is appropriate but I think she should have a chance to get out on parole at some point.

I obviously have no inside knowledge, but one has to imagine the jury will be lenient in sentencing. She didn't hunt down, kill and field dress the guy - she killed him by accident.
