It's easy to forget all of the rationalizations we're all, at times, guilty of.

"Gallo seems to have a lot more plate discipline, I think he's about to explode."
"All Foscue needs is some ABs, he's a hitter."
"If Willie Calhoun recovers from that HBP, he's going to rake"
"Once Nick Solak settles in he could be a real solid player"
"Sam Huff looks like the catcher of the future"
"Dane Dunning looks like a solid 4-5 guy in the rotation"
"Martin Perez is just scuffling right now, he'll turn things around"

Paraphrased of course. And sometimes it works out. But most of the time it doesn't. Most of the time, the player they are is the player whose stats you read on the back of their baseball card.

Joc looks totally washed and if we move on, I have very little fear that he's going to bite us. However bad the contract winds up being, I still think it was defensible. His OPS+ in the 3 years prior was 146, 112, 150. His savant pages are a ton of red for those 3 years. We knew he was a zero on the bases and the field. He was here to rake and obviously has not.

Not to mention Duran who played a great SS when Seager went down in 2023, was a big difference in us getting to the playoffs being we just barely snuck in
