Hot take, I don't even think this is ownerships fault. I'm putting this pile of **** at the feet of Chris Young.

Yea I was replying to Gig 'Em…it's laughable to think the owners are just going to willingly sell the team because fans want them to.

Absolutely on CY, 2023 was obviously a flash in the pan for him and his abilities to out together a roster.

The division RS/RA is

Athletics -10
Texas -1
Mariners +2 (who have had an extra home series compared to the rest of the division)
Astros -23
Angels -15

This team may not end up being any good, but some of you throw in the towel way too early.

It wouldn't matter even if they sold. Owning a team has become an investment and the days of the rich guy who loves baseball owning the team and running it trying to win on the field are over for most fan bases.

San Diego just went for 3.4 Billion to some generic investment group who I am quite sure will be less willing to let Preller take big swings in free agency.

The owners are going to tell us this winter that the biggest crisis facing baseball is the lack of a salary cap, but that's horse ****, the biggest threat to the game is the consolidation of teams in the hands of these loser ownership groups. The old guard owners certainly aren't going to complain because each sale just further inflates the value of the other franchises, but the game is on a collision course with disaster the more teams fall into the hands of these groups.

Agree. The division is not good. I'm not optimistic, but it doesn't take a huge leap to make the playoffs. Then you just hope to get hot.

Agree with this. although there has been an organizational philosophy going back to the early Daniels era of signing marginal players who had one good season, and expecting them to perform at the high water mark of their career levels. Way too many "we think he's figured things out" or "we've identified his problem and we can fix it" type signings IMO.

I'm hoping that our record is more of a reflection on the difficulty of our early season schedule than the long term potential for the team, but right now I'm disappointed to say that I'm standing my prediction that this is a 77ish win team. Definitely not in the 90 win range unless things change pretty quickly.

Smith has hit better the past few games, maybe he's turning it around. But Pederson and (sadly) McCutchen aren't getting it done to be primarily the DH. Carter needs to go to AAA I'm afraid. Catchers offense is pretty bad, which isn't entirely unexpected. There's just way too many players in the lineup who look like .200-.230 hitters for the offense to have any sort of consistency. JMO

And when the anchors of your offense (Seager and Langford) have given nothing, it's not going to go well.

Way too early for all of this.

We're doing . . . OK.

CY swung and missed on Pederson but most of our troubles came from relying on guys that delivered in 2023 but couldn't the next two seasons. No massive new contracts were given to any of them. Not signing Montgomery, LeClerc, Adolis, Garver, and Martin Perez to new deals was smart. Heim, Jung too. Extending or upping that list would have locked us down for years. Keeping guys like Smith and Duran has been better than signing any of the above.

I'm still skeptical on Mackenzie Gore, mostly because he has a girl's name and he played for a franchise where winning was optional. The Semien for Nimmo trade is looking favorable.

Seager needs to be much better at the plate. High draft picks Langford and Carter need to deliver.

Well said. Gotta believe Seager and Langford come around. Worried a little about Carter. Hope is back is not still causing issues.

This team just needs to stay close and then pick up a bat or two at the trade deadline.

My only other concern is catcher. We are pretty weak there, and we have virtually nothing in the farm system.

Yep, the Malcolm Moore pick is looking like a bust

That is part of the rub when you are picking #30. Not many guys that went after have looked great so far. Ryan Waldschmidt at 31 and is close to making the bigs with Arizona. Caleb Bonemar at 43 and Peyton Tolle at 50 are really the only other guys who are top 100 right now. Moore looks like a bust but that happens at 30 more often than not.

Doh. This sucks, hate to see one of the games best pitcher go down with an injury. But 2 to 3 months is better than TJ I guess.

From Scott Lucas today:

Malcolm Moore (0-3, BB) has caught 17 games, most in the system (even including the AAA team which has played an extra week). He's thrown out 32% of opposing runners versus the league average of 23%. Teams that excel at catching runners tend to squelch attempts, and the 45 against Hub City are the league's fewest. An eight-game on-base streak has Moore up to .225/.337/.380, about a 105 OPS+.

It was questionable when the pick was made. Not a very high ceiling.
