This is not correct. If you are up 2, a layup wins the game for you. Thats why you typically will make a pass up court for a wide open dunk. If you are up 1, you may not do that bc the dunk would not win the game for you. And if you are up 3, you may or may not do it (bc you assume you could at least make one free throw which would also win the game for you.
Sure, there's a .1% chance that it goes all wrong and you lose like Duke did if you try for the wide open dunk. But it's generally still worth trying for it in my opinion. There was literally no one on the other side.
Edit to add: I agree with your point if it's not the situation where there is a player wide open for a dunk on the other end. That's the situation we are talking about here. There is no one within 40 feet of them. Otherwise, I agree you don't try and beat the press to score.
You and the other guy are saying there was a wide open dunk, as if the 2 guys in the passer's face didn't exist. The teammates weren't wide open because the pass was heavily defended. UConn dedicated all 5 players to a desperation press and Duke had 2 guys bail to the front court, so it was essentially a 3 on 5 press break, and highly risky to advance the ball.
Scheyer himself said they should have just secured the ball and held on…
