Why are 12 seeds from automatic one bid conferences like High Point, McNeese, Akron, and Northern Iowa any different than their 13 seed brethren Hofstra, Troy, Hawai'i, and Cal. Baptist?
It seems like an arbitrary line picked because High Point already had the upset.
Its a little arbitrary, but not completely.
First, The 1-4 seeds are the committee's expected Sweet 16. Just like the 1 seeds are the expected Final 4. In mid/late season, annually, the committee puts out a preview of the top 16 seeded 1-4 by region.
2nd, historically there's a MAJOR dropoff in winning percentage between the 12 and 13 seed. Its 15% which is HUGE.
Its actually between the 10-12 seeds and the 13+ seeds historically. 10, 11, and 12 are all within 12 total wins all time of each other, relative to their round of 64 seed opponent. Roughly same number of games, although tournament expanded to 64 in 1985 -- skewing numbers slightly. While I'd rather be a 10 than a 12, statistically, it isn't THAT different.

Zags pretty much always get a bump because of their name and they rarely play good teams so the record is stacked. They beat an inconsistent and not elite UK team but also lost to a BADDDDD Portland team

Really would have been better for us to get an 11 seed. There is a pretty big drop off from the 2s to the 3s. And 11s did better in the first round than the 10s.
