For some reason, I hadn't even thought about Chris not pressing charges and saving Wills ass from the indignity and embarrassment of being arrested at the Oscar's.
Could you imagine LAPD walking up to the front row and cuffing him on live TV? And then having his name announced for best actor? It would be the greatest episode of COPS ever.

This raises the question: What are the benefits of academy membership? In other words, what is he giving up by resigning? Surely he can't vote now, but other than that I really don't know.
Other than no more voting and not being a part of the cool kids club, I'm not 100% sure.

This makes him look magnanimous and basically undercuts the awful press from whatever the academy decides.

I'm gonna resign and look for me on my redemption special with Oprah cause I've learned I did a really bad thing.

Maybe an unpopular opinion from me but I think it was a very savvy pr move from Rock.
A) An arrest or pressing charges for a slap could very much potentially lead to Rock coming off as a baby or a pu**y to some and Rock may have realized long term it wasn't worth it.
B) It gave Rock the ultimate high road that people respect the hell out of. He's obviously turned into the big winner in this all.

"It's reminiscent of companies with poor management and poor leadership where there is workplace violence or sexual harassment," said employment lawyer Peter Glennon. "Nothing was done, and not only was he allowed to stay, not removed, but he was given an award."

The new standards, the academy's leadership said, reflected and codified the organisation's values of "respect for human dignity, inclusion, and a supportive environment that fosters creativity".
"There is no place in the academy for people who abuse their status, power or influence in a manner that violates recognised standards of decency," it said.
Glennon said: "With Harvey Weinstein everybody knew it, but nobody said anything because of his power and privilege. The academy took a stance on Weinstein and adopted a code of conduct. Now we'll see if they're going to stand by their stated values. Everybody wants to know what happens to the powerful and privileged in these types of situations. It looks like the academy dropped the ball."
